ganoushoreilly··on OpenAI Codex agents go rogue and consumes USD 78,000 without authorization
If you're building an AI company i'm not to impressed with your understanding of the technology and risks. This sounds like your error not theirs.
ganoushoreilly··on What Sun got wrong
I think you're misunderstanding.

We need more Tesla style this is the price for all.. less dealership style with prices varying by some ones mood. As a buyer with a relationship, I should not be able to just buy through the website cheaper than your quote (for the exact item line by line). That's the scenario I had multiple times. Hell with the GB10's came out I bought a couple and the price through our Rep was 6k a piece no extras. We paid the list price $4k and were even able to use a discount coupon due to holidays that our rep wouldn't take. That's the BS Dell has been doing.

ganoushoreilly··on The new CC, an AI agent built for families
The problem with anything AI google launches is that it's going to be fragmented across products with different teams building their own interpretations and it's just not going to work seamlessly. Most of their efforts now fail in one way or another and my guess is that it's just a symptom of how google builds things.

ganoushoreilly··on What Sun got wrong
Dell was very much moving this way before modern AI explosion. The inconsistency on pricing alone depending on what rep was helping you also became a problem. I could often times call in direct and order via business line cheaper than dealing with my account rep. No reason to jump through so many hoops.

I prefer the "This is the price" model and just make it consistent. I can't wait until AI helps us remove multiple layers of middle men across Sales in general.

Just let me buy it and move on.

ganoushoreilly··on Bringing the cybersecurity capabilities of Claude Mythos 5 to more defenders
From a cost perspective Mythos is too expensive right now. With the right Harness and a few layers of models you can get close or better in some circumstances. Kimi / GLM, Qwen etc. And that's before ablation / Abliteration...

For those in Mythos.. if you ask how much it cost to assess their repos, your jaw would drop. We're talking the price of buying a couple machines to run Kimi / GLM full weight outright.. for one Scan.

Right now I wouldn't say GLM 5.3 is the same, but it's not far off. For the cost benefit it's the better of the two.

ganoushoreilly··on Why are so many young people getting cancer?
I suspect sugar intake has a drastic impact here. We genuinely have too much of it in everything.
ganoushoreilly··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
We must be twins, i've got the same three working in a cluster.

I was really excited to see where the GB300 Desktops end up, with 768gb ram but now that data is leaking / popping up (dell appears to only be 496gb), we may be in the 60-100k range and that's well out of my comfort zone.

If Apple came out with a 768gb Studio at 15k i'd bite in a heart beat.

ganoushoreilly··on Apple's 512GB Mac Studio vanishes, a quiet acknowledgment of the RAM shortage
I suspect they'll still want to offer it given the push they've been making over the last year with RDMA. My guess is the 512gb or larger studio will largely be a byproduct of the systems they're designing for their own AI efforts in the datacenter. I don't think this is the end of it for the longer term.
ganoushoreilly··on What not to write on your security clearance form (1988)
It gets weirder when they train you how to evade polygraphs as part of your role.. only to have you take one for your re investigation and to be asked "have you ever tried to evade a polygraph" or something along those lines. Of course you're not in a SCIF and your training or having been exposed to that training may in fact be classified. Quite the pickle..
ganoushoreilly··on Hackers (1995) Animated Experience
I have a couple copies of the laserdiek variants, always felt like the best tech to show homage.
ganoushoreilly··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
Happens in the Govt too. I think it's pretty common that if you can "sell a story" you're in a better spot than simply doing well at the job.
ganoushoreilly··on All Delisted Steam Games
The original story was definitely unique and a fun play on 360.
ganoushoreilly··on Global Memory Shortage Crisis: Market Analysis
This is by design. Rent your computer.. don't buy! Use Geforce Now!
ganoushoreilly··on The impact of the Salesloft Drift breach on Cloudflare and our customers
There were at least 700 victims being tracked by Google's Threat Intelligence Group
ganoushoreilly··on When DEF CON partners with the U.S. Army
I think many would be surprised how many people 20+ years ago were feds.. or became feds
ganoushoreilly··on The Army’s Newest Recruits: Tech Execs From Meta, OpenAI and More
Not necessarily the same thing, in addition to their rank there are legal authorities conveyed as Officers. Title 10 & 50 for example.
ganoushoreilly··on The Army’s Newest Recruits: Tech Execs From Meta, OpenAI and More
It's not even that. The biggest difference is by being sworn in, they now have Legal authorities and rights awarded to military personnel, but are also subject to the UCMJ. Depending on how they structure the program they may be able to get Title 10 and 50 coverage and possibly others. This drastically changes what they legally can or can't do on behalf of the USG. There's more to this than people realize. It's also not all that new. In the past they had "Consultants" deeply integrated into agencies to solve the same issues.

Palantir, Crowdstrike, many others pretty much started inside the govt and were built around classified information as a means to get their advantage. It's not right, but It's definitely something that happens. Source: I was there for it with both orgs and even back then everyone though Dmitry formely from CS was a dick. I still have the mousepad that Palantir created for the office in lieu of a training guide (just a bunch of printed shortcuts / commands).

ganoushoreilly··on Apple Fails to Clear a Low Bar on AI
I wouldn't say that's a Unique Apple Problem though.
ganoushoreilly··on A tool for burning visible pictures on a compact disc surface (2022)
There are definitely people that collect older media for use in the retro setups. I constantly buy New Old Stock when I find Floppies, Mini Disc, Cassettes, Zip Disks, hell just about anything. We're a weird bunch of collectors but we're out there.
ganoushoreilly··on After 25 Years, Linux Format Magazine Is No More
<3 for the Lifetime to 2600. Sure there's a lot of randomness in it, but that's what makes it a Gem.
ganoushoreilly··on After 25 Years, Linux Format Magazine Is No More
I still have a box of them somewhere, I have one from early 90's that still has all the circles on vendor ads where I was doing price comparisons. Those were the days.
ganoushoreilly··on What It Takes to Defend a Cybersecurity Company from Today's Adversaries
The excess use of — within this really screams "I Used ChatGPT to write/rewrite this".
ganoushoreilly··on A $20k American-made electric pickup with no paint, no stereo, no screen
To be fair, kei trucks are horrible in crashes too. That’s a big part of states starting to ban them.
ganoushoreilly··on I ditched my laptop for a pocketable mini PC and a pair of AR glasses
I was hoping to see this too. I regularly travel with my vision pro and it has been fantastic. It's definitely bulky though. I also tend to carry a couple laptops for work and recently switch my windows laptop to a GPD pocket. While I like it (using right now), the keyboard has many nuances you have to adjust to. Both of those options end up with me bringing a small keyboard and mouse.

I own a previous gen Xreal set and it just wasn't there for me resolution wise. I may have to try this newer gen and see.

ganoushoreilly··on Apple Intelligence Comes to Apple Vision Pro in April
The Vision Pro app and Guest mode improvements should be pretty cool, solving a bunch of headaches when trying to demo the tech to others.

Do you work in AR/VR regularly? I'd love for apple to release a toolkit for creating spacial environments ourselves.

ganoushoreilly··on Apple Intelligence comes to Apple Vision Pro in April
Have you messed with using it as a virtual display? I tend to find myself using that feature above everything else. It's been quite handy for traveling and it's enjoyable that you can set your environment and get away. In fact I'm using it right now in a virtual Joshua Tree scene.

It's definitely not for everyone though so I get it.

ganoushoreilly··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Doesn't matter, when the previous admin was in did they take in the considerations of the losing party? Nope. To the victor go the spoils.. of implementing the plan you ran on.
ganoushoreilly··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
You can do better to connect with the Americans that in fact don't share your sentiment. Your staunch response and attitude lead me to believe you have a superiority perspective, intentional or not. That's the exact attitude and response the country is pushing back against.

There are numerous projects that should not be funded. There is bloat, waste, and fraud through out the government. If you don't see that or know that, you've clearly never worked within it.

Your projection against fox news viewers could be turned back on you and argued you're doing the same thing. The difference is, that those fox news viewers for better or worse, voted for this and they get what they voted for. You can be mad, you can be sad, you can vote, and you can try and bring it up with the courts, but bottom line is it's happening.

ganoushoreilly··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
What I think is irrelevant, what is codified as the stance of the US Government is. They are acting on that assertion. I'm sorry you feel threatened by it and pigeonholed into your beliefs. This is the exact status of definition for the HHS and USG.

You can argue what you want, but they are enacting actions against what they have defined as truth. That's the by product of winning an election, you get to make the changes you ran on.

ganoushoreilly··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
That’s the beauty of it all, we’re all along for the ride and will see. We should all hope for the best.
