ganesh7··on Alzheimer’s disease can be reversed in animal models? Study
This is eyewatering. My father and grandfather died early due to this condition. Hope for many.
ganesh7··on Germany's 49-euro ticket resulted in significant shift from road to rail
I doubt that. Independent research paints a less clear picture. i would welcome it if the ticket were only free for workers, who suffer from one of the world's highest taxes and levies. It should not be available to welfare recipients.
ganesh7··on Notes on Vision Pro
Every day another submission about these goggles nobody seems to like. I'm just annoyed by all that unwarranted attention. Just because it's Apple.
ganesh7··on Intelligent Brains Take Longer to Solve Difficult Problems
I knew it. I take longer because I have an intelligent brain.
ganesh7··on Reflections on Ten Years Past the Snowden Revelations
While we commemorate the violation of privacy of US citizens and others, we should also commemorate the victims of US foreign interventions. There were 251 such interventions in the name of "freedom in democracy" in the last 30 years: https://mronline.org/2022/09/16/u-s-launched-251-military-in... https://sites.evergreen.edu/zoltan/wp-content/uploads/sites/...
ganesh7··on Why construction projects always go over budget
2x the budget does not seem too bad for such a big and useful project. Most projects should not be built at all. More annoying are simple projects like building a bridge or an airport that take forever.
ganesh7··on DPReview.com to close
I don't think I'll miss it. This is what happens when you sell out to Amazon, haha.
ganesh7··on German privacy watchdogs conclude that Microsoft 365 is incompatible with GDPR
It should be possible to put these bureaucrats into place. After all Germany is just another client state.
ganesh7··on Authors’ names have ‘astonishing’ influence on peer reviewers: study
good point.
ganesh7··on Countries with Declining Population 2022
thank god, germany does not have this problem with all the skilled workers coming here from everywhere.
ganesh7··on The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket
Every regular customer should be thankful this was put to an end. Keep in mind such every regular customer will have to pay for such extravaganza that will have to be reflected in the ticket prices after all.
ganesh7··on Why airplane windows have round corners (2016)
Uhuh:

"The Junkers Ju 49 was a German aircraft designed to investigate high-altitude flight and the techniques of cabin pressurization. It was the world's second working pressurized aircraft, following the Engineering Division USD-9A which first flew in the United States in 1921.[1] By 1935, it was flying regularly to around 12,500 m (41,000 ft)."

ganesh7··on We can't get enough of audiobooks
That.

And even without trendy 'blinkist' I used to take a similar approach by first reading some prepatory materials before investing time to read the book. Listening to an audiobook is just another way for me to complement but no replacement.

I would not say this is fool proof.

You will never be able to get the "key takeaways" of every book by reading some summary. Sometimes the key takeway might be the way a book is written, how something is repeated while other things are left out that are most valuable.

Likewise quotes that once meant nothing to you, you will only understand after studying material by the other in depth, etc.

just some thoughts.

ganesh7··on The coal mine that ate Hambacher forest
The impact on the environment is severe in many aspects. The impact on the power grid as well. Germany already have to pay other countries to accept Germany's excess electricity in the other countries's power grids.
ganesh7··on Why airplane windows have round corners (2016)
You could also say the great innovators did not understand the technology they looted from the Germans. Or the similarities in design, e.g. integration of turbines in the wings, of the Comet and Nazi jet planes are merely coincidental I assume.
ganesh7··on The coal mine that ate Hambacher forest
In this context the ecocide caused by the construction of windturbines is especially alarming
ganesh7··on Surveillance cameras debunk the bystander effect
Of course the real problem is the uplifting attitude that is written.

Where really violent crime is happening as now in Western European cities, London, Berlin, etc. people got to know the very real consequences of 'intervening' frequently resulting in seriously harming oneself or even getting killed. There have been instances where the police was not able to help. There are regular occurances of rescue teams being attacked to prevent them rescuing the victims of attacks. The even started a campaign to promote not attacking rescuers.

Also, in a democracy the use of force is supposed to lie with the administration only and of course there should only be very limited room for 'bystanders' 'to self-police to protect their communities and others' unfortunately we know the opposite is true.
