game_the0ry··on Meta acquires Moltbook
I can't take mark zuckerberg seriously anymore. He's made so many missteps recently: meta-verse, meta-glasses, llama, hiring wang, meta reality labs, etc.

He should probably hire a proper "number 2" (not someone political like sandberg) -- someone who "gets" the internet, like how he did when he was a harvard geek making a hot-or-not clone in his dorm room. I'm not sure acqui-hiring the moltbook founders is the move.

That being said, I think the one silver lining is that it seems like big-tech now has a willingness to hire people who actually ship things of value, like peter steinberger. Another nail in the coffin for leetcode, I hope.

game_the0ry··on US economy sheds 92,000 jobs in February in sharp slide
The iphone + fb/instagram = kids spending more time on the screen than irl

Since, youth suicide, depression, anxiety, etc have hit record levels. Coincides with the smart phone adoption and negative emotion graphs.

> It'll also be good to see leetcode die.

Agreed. Leetcode caused more harm than good.

game_the0ry··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
> Software developers: 0.68m vs 3.2m.

Wow. Just wow.

game_the0ry··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
Near zero interest rates + COVID remote work + PPP loans = Booming economy

What is happening now is the unwinding of the above. Now its:

Higher rates + AI + too many SWEs (bootcamps and over-hiring) = Busting economy

I think what we are in right now is more the norm and the post covid boom was an exception.

game_the0ry··on Tech employment now significantly worse than the 2008 or 2020 recessions
> In my experience, tech employment is incredibly bimodal right now. Top candidates are commanding higher salaries than ever, but an "average" developer is going to have an extremely hard time finding a position.

This is the K-shaped economy playing out. Its a signal that the american middle class is hollowing out. Bad, very bad.

game_the0ry··on US economy unexpectedly sheds 92k jobs in February
> "...unexpectedly..."

Really? Anyone here feel like the job market is thriving right now? Anyone surprised?

Bc I was like - yeah, totally, makes sense, not surprised at all.

If anything, I am waiting for that dreaded "business update" calendar invite from HR. I am already researching and taking notes on trade schools. Ready to punch that ticket any day now.

Fair. Last time I tried to daily Linux was 2016 with a crappy dell I had laying around, and I am pretty sure that I did not know what I was doing. I have been on Mac since 2012 and I tried windows in 2019 only to regret it, then went back to mac.
game_the0ry··on MacBook Neo
I am a big fan of the command line, but running linux as my daily driver is like trying to daily a kit car -- it breaks all the time and i spend more time than i want fixing it. With macos, i get my beloved command line, nice hardware, and a reliable OS. Win win win.

You must be lucky. They have been well-documented. [1]

The constant, annoying reminder to sign up for One Drive is enough to drive me crazy and want to throw my device out the window (I am writing this from a windows 11 laptop that I use for experimentation).

> This is a major challenge to Microsoft.

> Other than Microsoft nobody even makes decent laptops in the Windows world.

I get the impression that microsoft and the pc world have given up on consumer hardware and instead are completely focused on enterprise and ai. That's why windows 11 is saturated with bugs and is basically unusable, but enterprise is forced to buy it.

game_the0ry··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Defends Pentagon Work to Staff
Honestly cant tell if this is sarcasm or not.
game_the0ry··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
Quite the opposite -- you get promoted for complexity and inefficiency, and pretending like you are the only SME who can handle it, thus creating a dependency between you and your manager. A good technical manager can see this coming a mile away. Bad ones don't but it costs the company.

The sad thing is that it is common to get fired when you make things better bc then your work is perceived as "done" and your skills are no longer necessary. There are countless IT job stories where someone delivers a technical solution that saves a company a ton of money or generates revenue, then they get fired bc the solution has been delivered and an off shore team has been hired to maintain the work.

Big corps suck.

Edit -- reading some the responses here on this topic and they are...eye-opening and depressing.

game_the0ry··on My spicy take on vibe coding for PMs
> Leadership claims they are aware of Goodhart's Law, but their actions show otherwise.

Leadership will cherry pick metrics that are easy to game so they can make the next promo, and do say at the expense of company resources. This is a problem in every big corp not just tech.

> You should not deserve a job for the rest of your life. You should be homeless and honestly, maybe end your life....I actually don't really have the biggest problem with Trump. I voted for him.

Some people here would say you should not deserve a job, be homeless, and maybe end your life bc you voted for Trump. How do you feel about that?

game_the0ry··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Defends Pentagon Work to Staff
Alex Karp has publicly supported Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris. His company did work with the government before Trump, and you probably never had a problem with it until now.

Palantir always worked with the military, but I doubt you cared when they helped drone people during the Obama administration.

> People can elect racists. rapists, conmen, human traffickers, pedophiles, and even dictators. Doesn't mean I have to work with them or accept any of those as normal.

Trump is no saint, but you are turning him into a cartoonish villain. That never stopped democrats from taking his donation checks, did it?

> Resisting tyranny is a core tenant of democracy.

No, the core tenant of democracy is everyone gets a vote and you agree to live with the outcome, bc you get a vote too. And if you do not agree with the outcome, then you are the tyrant.

game_the0ry··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Defends Pentagon Work to Staff
Insufferable.

Consider that more than 50% of your fellow American citizens voted for the man you hate, and you will have to work with them no matter what. That's called "democracy."

Its childish to avoid that truth.

game_the0ry··on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Defends Pentagon Work to Staff
This is so lame.

Don't judge employees for what their CEOs do bc they do not have a choice in the matter.

That resume you toss might be someone that needs to pay a mortgage, has a sick wife, or autistic kid that needs the insurance. Or it could come from an employee who genuinely disagrees with mission and quit, but its not like you would know or even care.

What if your CEO went politically rogue and started openly supporting Trump? Would you quit? I doubt that.

What a childish attitude. Get your politics TF out of the office and remember the fact that we live in a democracy where sometimes you do not get your way.

> Are they doubling down on local LLMs then?

Honestly, I think that's the move for apple. They do not seem to have any interest in creating a frontier lab/model -- why would they give the capex and how far behind they are.

But open source models (Kimi, Deepseek, Qwen) are getting better and better, and apple makes excellent hardware for local LLMs. How appealing would it be to have your own LLM that knows all your secrets and doesnt serve you ads/slop, versus OpenAI and SCam Altman having all your secrets? I would seriously consider it even if the performance was not quite there. And no need for subscription + cli tool.

I think apple is in the best position to have native AI, versus the competition which end up being edge nodes for the big 4 frontier labs.

game_the0ry··on New iPad Air, powered by M4
FWIW, my wife is a student and her ipad has probably helped out her out a lot, for a lot of reasons:

* compact form factor allows her to study anywhere easily, especially on public transportation

* can access the internet almost anywhere

* note taking and drawing diagrams with apple pencil

* communication wit for both personal (imessage) and school study buddies (discord)

* can entertain herself with netflix, youtube, games etc when she wants to wind down

* ai apps like perplexity has helped her a lot with writing and research

She also has a laptop, but is rarely used. She even tends to type on her ipad keyboard. The larger form factor for the pro helps with that too.

Just curious, why don't you just use your iphone? Why the ipad? Why do you prefer it over an iphone?
game_the0ry··on “Microslop” filtered in the official Microsoft Copilot Discord server
They saw other successful AI products with discords (like midjourney) and then they probably just copied the idea thinking they would get similar success from it.

That's a lot of what big corp america strategy boils down to -- copy your competitors.

Don't get me wrong, creating a passionate community around a product is a great strategy for many reasons, but microsoft never had passionate users in the first place.

And it is telling that they are banning humor and criticism form their community, it shows they do not want have any criticism for their product, which is one of the benefits of community (fast and honest feedback loops). Its sort of like north korea where saying anything bad about the "great leader" or else. That's not a fun community, that is a community people want to leave but can't bc they will get shot at the border.

game_the0ry··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
I will let a principal of engineering at google do the talking for me:

game_the0ry··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
I work at a company that is forcing us to use AI as much as possible for our coding work. I did 1 month's of work in 1 day last week. A few hiccups, but the slop works as expected. From where I sit, the hype is real.
game_the0ry··on Why is Claude an Electron app?
Electron is a good choice for native-like desktop apps, even with the downsides.

Yes, feel free to downvote me.

game_the0ry··on I verified my LinkedIn identity. Here's what I handed over
Off topic -- the design for that blog is really slick. Added it to my "design swipe file."

Less off topic -- there are some black hat marketers that (I think) buy or create verified profiles with attractive women, then they use the accounts for b2b sales through linkedin DMs. I find that amusing. Neutered corpo bois are apparently big poon hounds. Makes sense when you think about it -- that type of guy is craving female attention and probably does not have the balls to do anything in real life, so a polite DM from a fake linkedin thot would be appealing.

True. It is actually doing poorly when priced in gold.
game_the0ry··on U.S. jobs disappear at fastest January pace since great recession
And yet the dow jones just passed 50K, an ATH.

That makes no sense...unless the economy is an a sort of death spiral where companies layoff employees, then stock goes, then companies layoff more, then stock goes up, so on and so forth.

Ouroboros. The economy is eating its own tail.
