gambogi··on Satya Nadella – Microsoft's CEO
The second sentence you quoted appears to be backing up the assumption, or giving you a clue as to where it came from. I don't think he was "correcting" you
gambogi··on Yale students made a better version of its course catalog. Yale shut it down
RIT also has a similar service [1] there's a new ui in the works for the spring, but it's interesting to see how widespread this issue is. Also I have to say RIT has done an awesome job if coordinating with the devs, they give a CVS dump of their course database periodically.

gambogi··on Dijkstra on Haskell and Java (2001)
I'm a second year CS major. That's not a safe assumption. Some of them learn to swim, and some of them drown. A guy in my CS1 class last year (there was no placing out) failed to comprehend the concept of words controlling a computer.

Further evidence is the four class intro sequence steadily had fewer sections (of the same size) with each passing term

This is incorrect in several ways.

1) Ignores obvious intention of the author

2) "several"

there is no evidence hacker news had anything at all to do with this idea. Also, just because people are excited about an idea doesn't make them naïve about it's freshness.

I'm certain drone delivery has been discussed by many countless people, most of whom the acronym HN means nothing to.

I'm an avid runner, but I can't go more than four miles on a treadmill due to boredom

I understand where you're coming from, but you have to remember that student athletes are also people, and members of the community. I could walk you through the argument about physical fitness and the value of exercise, but I'll save you the time. Just step down from that absolute up there.
gambogi··on The Internet has raised $10k for the Palestinian researcher snubbed by Facebook
The phrasing would probably be closer to "$10k raised for..." or "individuals raise $10k..." The fact that they did it through the internet doesn't seem hugely novel (aside from the fact they evidently can't get the money to him
gambogi··on The Internet has raised $10k for the Palestinian researcher snubbed by Facebook
No one would say "the mail has raised $10k for ... "

These are just people using tools. The internet is not a person or subset of people, it's a utility open to anyone.

gambogi··on Cool Stuff the U.S. Government Has Done (and Is Doing)
I'm on my phone so I can't really put out a long response but... > There are only about 4 hops between any 2 people on Facebook. If you take the median number of Facebook friends on one account (100) and raise it to the 3rd power, you get 1 million people every time one person is placed under surveillance.

Cool, 100^3 = 1mil. I wonder what the average number of shared friends a user has with their network. Otherwise by this reasoning there are about a million times more people on facebook than there are facebook accounts.

gambogi··on Books and papers every graduate student should read
While this HN post is certainly guilty of the puffery you describe, the actual site is just a collection of resources this professor thinks are useful for various categories of grad students.
gambogi··on How Technology Is Destroying Jobs
Well, first of all, I'm not arguing for equal pay for everyone, I'm in favor of a guarenteed minimum income. Secondly, money doesn't work as a motivator for non menial tasks.[1] And you know, a task that seems boring and uninteresting to you might not for someone else. As for how many of us would even develop software at all, I need only point to the open source community. Extrinsic notivation has its place, but it is no substitute for that internal drive.

gambogi··on How Technology Is Destroying Jobs
We know that intrinisically motivated people will aspire to do, even if there isn't a need for them too. If we provide for both the intrinsic and extrinsic, we effectively cover 100% of motivated individuals. By making it easy for those with passion to act on it we do all of society a favor. As for the non-productive members of society, it's not a huge issue because they don't need to be productive to live. This means that your right to live is unconditional. Excuse my corniness, but after all, why should there be conditions on your right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?

gambogi··on Papers and essays that every programmer should be aware of
I disagree on 5). You should probably be at a bare minimum familiar with different types of data structures and how they work. Knowing where to look up "theoretic bits" isn't actually useful. As a programmer, you should know when a dictionary might sace you time, just as one scratch of the surface example.
gambogi··on A summer job paid tuition back in ’81, but then we got cheap
I've been working since I was 15 (I'm 20). In total, I've made around $15k. My first year of school cost roughly twice that figure.

If I wasn't majoring in CS (or my Grandfather hadn't died), I would not be going to the school I am. This isn't how the system should work.

gambogi··on Don't Look for Talent, Find People Who Do Things
How do you know that you've never met a person who didn't share their ideas with you?
gambogi··on Don't Look for Talent, Find People Who Do Things
Well, if we're getting our etymology on, 'engine' originally referred to any trick, device, or machine. An engineer was someone who created engines. It only took on the association with steam locomotives in the 1800s.

I would also like point out that early computers were also known as analytic engines.
