galori··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2017)
San Francisco, CA / REMOTE OK in the US | Lead Full Stack Rails Developer | Stitchfix | Full-time

Hello, we're continuing to do a ton of hiring at Stitchfix, but specifically I'm hiring a developer to join my small team - "Better Data Engineering". We are a small team that is responsible for Stitchfix's famous "Style Profile", and other similar data intensive customer facing features. We work closely with the Data Science team, and our goal is always to serve our customers better using the information they provided while not being creepy :-)

,---. Stitchfix is a clothing / style personalization service.

galori··on Number of active repositories in GitHub per language, per month
What happened to Perl that it spikes to 12% for one month about 2 years ago? then it went back down to its normal obscurity at 1%.
galori··on Number of active repositories in GitHub per language, per month
Nice, this is better. It also adds the 4 additional languages that were added to the graphs after I made mine.
galori··on Number of active repositories in GitHub per language, per month
So I took the 2016 numbers from this and used them to make this graph, using the same data but normalizing for github's growth - so its showing the % share of the overall instead of absolute #'s. It tells a different story:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zs1pO_8Q6RASJ6Mc10kB...

EDIT I don't think one is more correct than the other, its just another perspective. I didn't mean to imply the first one is incorrect.

galori··on Number of active repositories in GitHub per language, per month
Yeah looks like part of this is just github's growth. Would be interesting to see this normalized for that - like languages share of the overall 100%.
galori··on What if something like the Morris Worm never happened?
fun read.

But...I'm sure there would have been another worm or virus (and many others - like there had been) that would have caused the same vigilant info security that we have today.

I just spent an hour listening to some of their recorded call sessions on youtube, it is hillarious. (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3OxCWLEmoIhNMm-hnvBm9Q)

It's also genius, if we can automate transferring telemarketers to stuff like this, we'd be using technology against them, use up all their human paid time and make it unprofitable to spam call.

No he's from the UK. He meant clousure
galori··on Ask HN: Is it possible to run your own mail server for personal use?
If you look at the aggregate of the comments here, I think you get the idea. Its possible, but you have to constantly work at keeping it going with reputation, whitelisting, etc. and you'll never get to 100% deliverability ingoing or outgoing. Probably more like 70%-80%.

The big guys whitelist each other.

There are (very expensive) services for the medium guys, such as [Return Path](https://returnpath.com/) , that help you keep good relationship with the various ISPs. With many ISP's they even have a very specific whitelisting deal where you literally pay to be whitelisted...I think thats mostly the second tier ones like AOL, Comcast, Yahoo. Gmail for example doesn't play ball with that - but they will whitelist you if you follow all the rules and have a good reputation, which someone like Return Path can help with.

Is the situation shady? Yes. But it rose out of a need for dealing with a real problem (spam), which you have to admit has gotten under control over the last 10 years.

Bottom lime, I would use a 3rd party service.

Yes exactly. If you factor out a class that deals exclusively with timeOfTenPercentHeight, then the variable names can be OnTheFallingEdge and OnTheOtherEdge or whatever...

We're growing at a dizzying pace. I'm dizzy just thinking about it. The business is Women's (now Men's too) Fashion e-commerce / subscription service, every few weeks, chosen by personal stylists and our algorithms. The personal stylists choose the perfect outfit for our customers, and the customers love it. Our referral to friend statistic is pretty great, and its a big part of our "growth engine" (Lean Startup term).

We do not have formal Product Managers, instead that responsibility is shared between Engineers, UX and the business stakeholder. It works really well, and as an engineer you get a deeper insight into the problems you're solving.

Its nice for a change to be part of a successful, growing company after working for too many failed startups.

I'm working with some of the smartest, most driven but nicest people and you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least consider it. Everyone cares about the craft of Software Engineering. Our interview process is geared towards that, and not towards solving useless puzzles. (You know who you are, companies that do this.)

galori··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2015)
StitchFix | San Francisco, CA | [REMOTE OK] [ONSITE IS MORE FUN] | Principal Full-Stack Rails Engineer / Manager

(We're also hiring for many, many other roles including: VP Engineering, UX Designer, and then a slew of operation / warehouse type roles, Stylist roles, Photographer, Comp Managers and lots of others. We're growing at a dizzying pace. I'm dizzy just thinking about it. All open jobs: https://www.stitchfix.com/careers)

We're solving some REALLY interesting problems. I just joined as Principal Engineer and I'm loving it. The business is an advanced algorithms & machine learning recommendation engine applied to a Women's Fashion e-commerce / subscription service. In english, we send our clients an outfit every few weeks, our algorithm and our stylists choose the perfect outfit for our customers, and they LOVE it. Just search instagram for hashtag "#stitchfix" and see how many of our customers post happy pictures of themselves receiving this month's "Fix'. Our customer referral to friend statistic is off the charts.

On the business side, it's a startup but we're profitable and we're not planning on seeking additional funding. Its amazing to be part of a company that is experiencing so much growth and success. On the Engineering side, we're solving some really interesting problems. The Principal Engineer role which I just started is a very interesting type of position. We do not have Product Managers, and Principal Engineers are responsible for a part of the business (I'm responsible for part of the consumer facing web site). They are responsible for driving the product forward, working with all the stakeholders and then also implementing the solutions. When people hear this sometimes they ask "so what the engineers just sit around and invent features?"...well its not like that. What Product Managers do is talk to all the business stakeholders, customers, consult the A/B testing results, take UX design input into account and then try to put that all together. Of course there is still one key business stakeholder that makes the high level calls, but there is a lot of Product Management type work that happens between that decision that typically falls on a product manager and here it falls on the Principal engineer.

There is an entire separate department we call AA (Algorithms and Analytics) They are working on really advanced machine learning recommendation algorithm and with every little improvement of the algorithm they can see real impact of increased sales and increase customer satisfaction. Don't let the industry (Womens Fashion) put you off. The smartest, most driven but nicest people work here and you'll be doing yourself a disservice if you don't at least consider it. The engineers I'm working with really care about the craft of Software Engineering and this is a great environment for anyone that feels the same.

Check out our engineering and algorithms web site: http://technology.stitchfix.com/ and here is our jobs page https://www.stitchfix.com/careers.

To reach the hiring managers and recruiting team directly, email tech-jobs (at) stitchfix (dot) com (its not a black hole - it actually goes to the right people.) You can say you heard about it from me (Gal Steinitz) - a Principal Engineer on the Engineering team.
