galangalalgol··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
No, but cbp could have a k9 at any bottleneck they want and those dogs read their partners body language, so if they are a racist idiot it might alert on excessive melanin providing probable cause. Assuming they didn't just train it to alert on command. And if it alerts yeah they can demand to search your phone. I don't hear about it getting used, but that could be because they are careful not to use it on anyone who might start a case that could get it ruled unconstitutional. They openly use it where they think there is actually smuggling.

The law makes it clear that the rules are only suspended in the customs zone of the airport and within 100 miles of the airport. They seem to follow that. The checkpoints you see in Washington state or down near the border with Mexico do not show up around denver or dfw. The reality is bad enough we don't need to exaggerate it. And they can't just grab every phone as they walk around LA either, they have to signal their dog to alert on you to give them probable cause...
galangalalgol··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
The baltics have even more vivid memories of soviet life don't they? And nato trip wire troops so any attack would be killing french and uk soldiers (nuclear powers). Trump was talking about taking Greenland by force right up until the trip wire forces arrived. It is an odd job as a soldier to be a hostage I think, but it seems to work. It would be more reliable for Poland to obtain its own nuclear deterrent, along the lines of the buffers vs dependencies argument in the post. There has been talk, but that seems difficult.
galangalalgol··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
The more likely hyperbolic step would be to blow up outgoing pipelines and apply secondary sanctions. Or, as threatened, blow up power and water treatment plants killing large swaths of the civilian population. Nukes wouldn't be necessary to cause mass death.
galangalalgol··on Starlink ground station in Poland hit by fire in suspected arson attack
And the West can and does return the favor. Perhaps Poland should fund the destruction of some Siberian pipeline pump stations? Article 5 against Russia is not going to get consensus anyway, so making it formal just increases the risk of escalation.
galangalalgol··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
If you look at my sibling post I explain that is how they used to do control, but they outgrew it. The spinnup times made it act like a spring damper system and it had bad control states even then.
galangalalgol··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
They sent the data along the lines. Initially that was just the frquency. Drooped low? Ramp it up, running high, turn it down. That is effectively a spring mass damper system and it always had instability conditions that caused problems. They begand to modulate additional data, including voice, analog over the lines to add additional controls. As more people joined, and load became less predictable even that wasn't enough. Every endpoint now measures load at something like 30hz and that won't fit across the lines. They added separate dedicated fiber or microwave along towers. Those still get used. Probably sometimes unencrypted still. They are targets I'm sure. Then we have renewables and nuclear with their mostly inflexible power supply, that makes it harder to stabilize yet. The control loop stuff is often physically separate, but that is the older stuff and less secure. The data from all those houses still has to get onto the logically/physically isolated control network somehow, so that is a vulnerability too. Anyone with a zigbee radio cam see the encrypted packets.

Air gaps are not magical, they will not stop the flood. The electrical grid has to communicate with itself to load balance, so you can run dedicated wires with giant cut-me signs pointing at it, or you can use symmetrical key encryptors to route it over the intenet. You needed to use the encryptors anyway, so why not. If bad software gets in via thumb drives music disks etc (and it will of the flood is pointed at you) it can still do bad things. But so can a hunting rifle pointed at a transformer station. That nearly blacked out all of socal once.
galangalalgol··on MiMo v2.6
The scenario we are all dancing around is if there is a war over reunification. That would be between the worlds two superpowers. No one would walk into a nuclear Holocaust on purpose I bthink, but miscommunication happens. Even if no other nations intervened, the reunification would definitely destroy all the worlds leading fabs, and even if it didn't, I read ASML can and would shut their machines down remotely. So those researchers would shift to figuring out what they can do at the 28nm node... Meanwhile the rest of us ponder why old powerful men can't let things be.
galangalalgol··on Heretic removes restrictions from language models
I think that was the point being made? Outlawing something does nothing if enforcement is not feasible. The music and movie industries didn't crush torrents, they switched business models to streaming with prices being determined mostly by how much hassle was avoided by skipping the torrents.
galangalalgol··on The Effect of CRTs on Pixel Art (2024)
I don't agree that the cheaper option is less good. I can admit that ai often (but not always) writes code with more attention to detail than I do, and much faster. Diffusion by itself does not produce human tier graphics (usually), but in combination with llms and heuristics it can do some things better than humans. When wielded by a graphic artist who could do it by hand with mixed media much less digitally, the amount of top tier art that can be produced is increased. Less expensive art doesn't have to mean worse art, it can mean equally good art, just note of it, art everywhere.
galangalalgol··on More than 100k people in Japan are now aged 100 or older
Quite possibly. But shaheds aren't the answer either. After Fukushima, the plutonium 240 fuel for the breeders they don't want to run anymore has been piling up. Not as good as 239, but that is what they should be looking at.
galangalalgol··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
It does make one wonder how many nations off China's coast are taking notes on how to asymmetrically shut down waterways even against a giant modernish navy. Or Singapore and neighbors... If the world cops can't guarantee safe trade anymore things are going to get strange, and not in a good way.
galangalalgol··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
The gp only mentioned Israel. Actual antisemitism is common enough that it is counterproductive to use the term so loosley.
galangalalgol··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
It seems unlikely they would let any political divisions or legitimate grievances go unexploited. It is their cultural core competency for centuries. That does not mean the greivances being exploited aren't valid, or that the parties themselves don't aid in the fracture so they don't have to worry about competition with parties whose ideology is too close to theirs.

Edit: This is reductive, Russia has tons of culture besides this trait, but it is the fundamental strategy that allowed a landlocked state with no natural borders to survive and expand. When you learn a strategy to survive or cope with adversity, it sticks long after it is beneficial.

galangalalgol··on Libraries Run Rust Inside Python (With PyO3)
It does, and rustc nostd already supports a lot of places cpython can't run, but the other way around is just non existent. Rustc can't and will likely never support ti dsps because they own the compiler and a long is 48bits. Dreamcast and other things with weird data sizes also are out.
galangalalgol··on Libraries Run Rust Inside Python (With PyO3)
I can't come up with any cases where cpython would compile that rustc can't target. There are some more niche interpreters that can run on embedded stuff with no rustc support, but they are also subsets of python so it isn't like you can just pull a wheel file and expect it to work
galangalalgol··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
If you think so little of them, then imagine what the people who pay $5M for a meal with him can convince him to do. Or what people who pay his son-in-law/iran-negotiator 25M a year can call and ask him to do.
galangalalgol··on Rust is tier-1 language at Microsoft
The autovectorizer works quite well in llvm with all the aliasing guarantees rust gives it. Especially now fastmath hit so wide types aren't necessary anymore. I don't need unsafe or crates that use unsafe to beat the performance of c++. If you are doing something very specific with niche intrinsics llvm can't use, then maybe I'd have to use unsafe. But I don't run into that. Rust is faster for the same reasons it avoids UB. Also the Kool aid comes in multiple flavors!

galangalalgol··on A Kantian Critique of "Sorry" by Justin Bieber
Depending on the relationship involved, asking the person why they think I behaved as I did often helps. Sometimes the reason they think I did what I did is more correct than what I would have put after but or and. And sometimes the answer they give shows they are modeling my motivations completely incorrectly.
galangalalgol··on Abdominal fat predicts heart disease risk better than BMI
The farther from average height you are the worse it is. If you are from some part of the world where the average height distribution is near the point BMI based itself you will perceive it to be so much better.

I am only 6' and only an intermediate lifter. I'm overweight, but BMI makes me look obese. It really only takes a normal person a year or so to get to three plates on squat with no supplements other than chicken broccoli and rice if they don't skip workouts. Assuming no injuries. That level of strength easily distorts bmi wildly if you are even a little taller than average.

galangalalgol··on Can Intel finally beat ARM on performance per Watt?
I have aeen usb-c bent but I have never seen 3.5 break in decades of use. Walkmans then discmans falling. Shooting back out of my chair and snagging it such that the whole tower spins unplugging ps/2 mouse. But the headphones are fine. What do you do to those poor things? The only time I have seen one fail it was on a custom pcb and the solder joint broke. A couple minutes with an iron and it was back.
galangalalgol··on No one can afford to make Myst games anymore
If the difference between me getting to enjoy some solo developer's vision or not is whether they use the ai, I'll ignore it. Not everyone who can create a great gameplay experience can code, draw, or create music, and the margins can preclude having three different people. The problem you are pointing out is that ai is allowing a repetition of "Engels' pause" where capital accrues all the benefits of automation. Back then the unrest was resolved with workhouses and shipping people to Australia. Also shooting them in the streets. It is hard to predict how that will end up this time.
galangalalgol··on No one can afford to make Myst games anymore
Why is using it for code more acceptable than for art? I can't imagine we aren't already seeing tons of both in indie games. Maybe aaa too? Is there any ramification for leaving off the disclosure, or adding one? Personally if the gameplay is good I kind of don't care if it used lots of ai.

galangalalgol··on The Gargantuan Lie That Is Collapsing the Climate
Some reports indicate it is already to late for emission reduction, or even elimination, to halt the feedback effects that continue the trend. But it won't be too late for active climate engineering until the effects of the climate change prevent our ability to do that engineering.
galangalalgol··on Changes at Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis from CEO to Chair, Jeff Dean departs
Is Gemini really that bad? I mean, I would always prefer anthropic for agentic coding, and apparently openai has the math thing cornered, but if I'm using ai like a search engine gemini does that just fine. That may be all they were actually aiming for whatever else they say.
