gainda··on Microsoft completes $69B deal to buy Activision Blizzard
the antitrust behavior is two of the largest players in the gaming space combining. how is that going to promote competition? it's just going to make it easier for them to outspend and outlast and eventually ingest it's competition

Sony's gaming revenue is ~26 B

8 % of MSFT's revenue is from gaming = ~15 B

Nintendo 12 B

ABK 8 B

EA 7.5 B

( and that isn't including tencent and netease. i didn't bother trying to find figures for them but they are in the running here too )

his victims
gainda··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
totally understandable and if that happened to me i would also be very averse to trying the pro (but this is my first product with them). thankfully the quality hasn't let me down so far. my only mistake was trying a pre-lubed option on one just for the heck of it and it was def over-lubed.
gainda··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
i use the gmmk pro myself and i really enjoy the knob. i ended up buying a second one just for work bc they weigh a ton and i wasn't going to constantly lug it around
gainda··on My Unhealthy Relationship with Keyboards
until you start spending hundreds on a single board and obsess about switches, keycaps, materials, acoustics, etc. it is not unhealthy at all !
gainda··on iOS 17 is available today
to be fair your original unedited comment was so vague no one got it until you clarified with the blog post. so maybe there is something for you to take away there
gainda··on Tell HN: 6 months after the NYT acquisition, Wordle has started showing ads
I had the All Access digital subscription and I recall still seeing ads.
gainda··on The process of making fake food [video]
When I go to the Mitsuwa in Edgewater, NJ I love seeing these in the restaurants. Since my childhood I've always appreciated it when restaurants showed you at least a picture of what the dish would look like.
gainda··on Walmart didn’t kill the small town, it is the small town
My father and now me are in the "badly neglects lawn equipment but somehow they carry on" camp. I'm not sure what it is, but our stuff just works. I have a shed for my equipment but I leave the gas in over the winter, I crank them right up once I need them the next year, I use gas from last year that's been sitting in the can ...

and these are cheap sub $200 machines

gainda··on Blade-Runner-Tailwind: A Collection of Blade Runner Themed Tailwind Components
I don't think this font looks good in the examples shown. Hurts my eyes. Sometimes the strikethrough effect is too destructive and makes it hard to read the word. It sure does look good on a movie poster though.
gainda··on Arc Browser 1.0
It should work on a Mac or iOS device right now - I just checked it on my iPhone
gainda··on Panchanga Tantra: The Magic of the Indic Calendar System
Looking forward to reading this after work.

It reminds me of finding this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindu_units_of_time

I always thought it was neat how grand and epic the sense of time is in Hinduism. Something I wonder but have never looked into is do other religions have long time scales like this?

gainda··on Ask HN: Why do the Fitness+ and Health app from Apple have such a horrible UI?
I use Maps about 50% of the time and it works well for my needs but Google Maps is better for discovery. I agree that the podcast app is terrible though. I use Pocket Casts as its the only one that seems to neatly organize shows, progress, etc.
gainda··on Threads has 10M users so far

gainda··on What Medieval Manuscripts Reveal About the Hidden History of Whales
nice little read. another whale story from a long time ago i enjoyed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porphyrios_(whale)

i think it was here that I saw it ... can't recall

gainda··on 'Tales of Middle-earth' tempts and divides 'Magic' fans with 'LotR' crossover
as a massive lotr fan and casual magic fan, i had a lot of fun with the set on pre-release night last friday. mechanics felt fun! looking forward to draft the set a few more times in stores ( i usually never go out for magic and keep it between friends at home )
gainda··on Gear Patrol has acquired DPReview
I used dpreview to buy my dslr back in early 2017 and it was so helpful in comparing the different options even as a newbie. Beyond thrilled to see amazon giving it up -- hopefully this means it can thrive.
gainda··on Tipping in the United States has gotten out of control
I generally tip no more than 15%. Seeing suggested tips come up when I pick up take out is too common. In the past I would robotically tap the lowest option but now I am trying to be more deliberate and discerning about it. I really can't afford to tip everyone for everything!
gainda··on Supreme Court: Harlan Crow paid school tuition for Clarence Thomas’ nephew
with each day that goes by we see more news of impropriety among most, if not all, of the currently sitting justices & past ones as well. when is something going to be done about it?
gainda··on Two AI Stanford grads launch new social media app
the best i can find is this: https://medium.com/@sksauren/taking-social-media-back-to-its...
gainda··on PornHub blocks users in Utah, cites state’s age verification law
Society has many scourges and history seems to prove that prohibition is not the answer
gainda··on New York to ban natural gas, including stoves, in new buildings
"In addition to the environmental concerns raised by such widespread use of natural gas, some health experts have also argued that using it in the home, especially when cooking, may pose a health risk to consumers."

Spending a day walking around NYC is probably worse for my health than years of gas stove usage. Every time I leave the city I feel like I need a shower from all the grime and who knows what I feel caked on me.

gainda··on ExxonMobil reports record profits of $11.4b
I've been listening to a podcast called Drilled, of which Season 8 concerns Exxon's relationship with Guyana (my home country) & its newfound oil. Parts of it highlight tried and true tactics that they use. It's a shame
gainda··on Stannous Fluoride – Oral Health Benefits
I never understood how this could be recommended seriously to folks. I've never met anyone who didn't wash their mouth out after brushing. It just seems uncomfortable to go straight to bed with toothpaste lingering all over your mouth.
gainda··on Kids trying to play video games on school laptops
When I was in the fifth grade we got a few G3's in our classroom. We were supposed to rotate small blocks of time throughout the week so we could have "research" time on them. I was the one who found CroMagnon Rally, Bugdom, & Nanosaur. They didn't let us use them much after that!
gainda··on Apple Card’s new high-yield Savings account is now available, offering a 4.15 p
part of me wonders if its really there to just drive Apple Card adoption instead.
