They are also terrible for the planet.
I'd have thought there would be some things you could strongly encourage:
1. Come up with some standard format where the code and the data live in separate files.
2. Come up with some standard format where you can take load a regular .py script as a cell based notebook using metadata comments (and save it again).
If these came out of the box it would solve most of the issues.
In particular:
* Notebooks store code and data together, which is very messy if you want to look at [only] code history in git. * It's hard to turn a notebook into an assertive test. * Converting a notebook function into a python module basically involves cutting and pasting from the notebook into a .py file.
These must be common issues for anyone working in this area. Are there any guides on best practices for bridging from notebooks to applications?
Ideally I'd want to build a python application that's managed via git, but some modules / functions are lifted exactly from notebooks.
All the open phones in the world won't help if you use closed-source WhatsApp / Facebook. And you kinda have to if you want to talk to your less tech savvy friends and family.
They thought they were working for a "good, solid, respectable journal". Turns out their employer wasn't as respectable as they thought, so they quit - not over a disagreement with their peers but over a disagreement over the journal's standards.
If you look at taxi + flight + taxi + night at hotel - the train will be attractive.
If we correctly price externalities (i.e. environmental cost) then the train should win hands down!
Sure the client might be liable for some loss-of-earnings fees but this really should be better for everyone than this.
If you have an IOU from the US government for $100 it's worth about $99 on the open market.
If you have an IOU from a highly rated US company (e.g. Ford) for $100 you'd expect it to be worth about $94.
Yet we're somehow supposed to believe than an equivalent IOU from tether is worth more?!
Oh and the US Government and Ford will probably pay you some form of interest if you hold it long enough...
It simply doesn't add up!
Still I have little sympathy - it's hard to argue that endless Twilight fan-fiction did the franchise any harm. And there's plenty of non-canon James Bond films that have no impact on the main franchise.
Though I guess with this setup I can do "accept cookies" knowing that they will shortly be deleted.
Arguably regular police could check the situation out first?
Equally we as a society need to be grown up and accept that sending a specialist armed team to respond to an event that has been shown to happen less often that people win the lottery is clearly unrealistic. Claims like this can be handled by regular policing forces who can call upon backup if necessary.
Is there any data available?
If anything the amazing thing was that people would pay us to look after our money in the first place!
I am a nerd - I went through a phase of trying to get people to use PGP and then XMPP. Both are technical masterpieces but a complete disaster for actual users.
Here's the crux: I'd rather have all my conversations encrypted than just the ones I have with other nerds. In this respect WhatsApp has been the best thing that's happened to messaging since the invention of the internet.
This has been my go-to advice for a while now too! The key driving point is that amazing crypto is 100% useless if the person you're talking to doesn't use it, or uses it incorrectly.
The only sticking point with the above advice is the nerds who think they understand crypto but don't and insist on you using some crazy app :/
Is anyone working on bridging the gap between notebook sketches and production ready code?
A better solution might be to apply a charge per nonstandard charger given out to customers. At this stage it would practically be an Apple tax.
