gabrielblack··on CIA Implicated in Attack on North Korean Embassy in Madrid
If confirmed, it's a great example of lack of professionalism. This is the behavior of a gang of drunken thugs, no words. Which kind of information worth the diplomatic incident and the irritation of a partner nation ? Because that kind of desperate action only is justified to rescue information of capital importance.
gabrielblack··on U.S. to ground Boeing 737 Max 8
In this list of 737 accidents, correct me if I'm wrong, seems that the crashes for similar reasons (shortly after takeoff) are 3 , not 2. There is other one (May 18, 2018 ) involving a 737-100/200 that seems strictly related to the other two by time and dynamic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_accidents_and_incident...

gabrielblack··on Every IT pro should work in a mainframe environment at some point (2015)
Some serious industries, banks, insurance companies, telco are using mainframes. I worked in one of that for a while and I learnt a lot. Besides, I don't think many people would prefer they bank accounts on the cloud ...
gabrielblack··on Japanese police arrested a 13yo girl for posting an infinite loop code
Please correct me, they called the police to arrest a teenager because are horrible programmers? I won't justify the girl, but in that case I should say, do a favour, debug it and shut up.
gabrielblack··on Are dark themes bad for your eyes? Alan Kay seems to think so
Bah, simply give to the user the freedom to switch from light to dark themes to be comfortable in every situation. Have you ever tried light themes on the bridge of a ship at night?
gabrielblack··on Guide to Recursion for Coding Interviews
The example is buggy. In a better version, both the parameter and the returned type should be unsigned. With negative numbers, that don't make sense, the program will crash. I don't think the interviewer will like it written in that way :-)
gabrielblack··on Ask HN: How to RTFM?
Exactly. The question is where's TFM today ? Doxigen is not TFM. The examples are not TFM. The comments are not TFM. The video posted on Youtube is not TFM. The blog is not TFM. I want TFM or at least TF Man Pages.
gabrielblack··on The Cuckoo's Egg
Debugging of networks with logic analyzer, counting round trip with the oscilloscope's divisions, what glorious times ! :-)
gabrielblack··on The Cuckoo's Egg
"The book was chronicled in an episode of WGBH’s NOVA entitled “The KGB, the Computer, and Me”, which aired on PBS stations on October 3, 1990"

I think it's this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcKxaq1FTac

Oh,me I'm ROFL: an actor is identical to one of X-Files "Lone Gunmen". When he explains the beeper to his wife I needed the oxygen. It's like "Doctor Who vs hackers" :-)

gabrielblack··on Instacart paying 80 cents an hour because worker received a large tip
I'm European, in my country if an employer only try to do something like that go strait to the jail. Now is in progress a process to guarantee to the guys employed in the delivery of food by bike a minimum wage because they was exploited by some companies, but that case isn't distantly comparable to this one. I can't believe this behavior it's tolerated in a civilized nation.
gabrielblack··on Ask HN: Is it normal to fall out of love with coding?
I'm also a maker, but this guy is just entered in my pantheon of hero. Swords ! With some kind of code can be a solution, also ! :-)
gabrielblack··on Ask HN: Is it normal to fall out of love with coding?
Blacksmith. If it was possible to go back in time, I would be a blacksmith. This is my conclusion after working several years as consultant. The last project was horrible, hundreds of thousands of lines in C++ wrote by monkeys in ten years, layers of layers of crap. When I say layers I'm not speaking about architectural layers, but geological layers, like the sedimentation that trap the skeletons of dinosaurs. They introduced control version systems 3 years ago: before they preserved all the revision as comments, into the source files ! Every ten lines of source code, twenty lines of commented old code with the description of who, when and why the code was disabled. That was the time I really desired to die. Honestly, I enjoy myself only with my stuff, rarely at work.
gabrielblack··on What If Linus Torvalds Gets Hit by a Bus? (2000)
Obvious, he sends SIGBUS to the driver and then someone examines the core dump :-) Forgive me !
gabrielblack··on Amazon is selling stolen art, fake products and is infringing copyrights
I hope that Amazon, in case of repeated violations, will take down the sellers, giving the information to right enforcement organizations. If changing the ASIN is enough to continue, no surprise if it becomes the counterfeiter heaven. This is a serious matter, counterfeit electronics can damage things and peoples, even kill them creating fire or discharging lethal electric power.
gabrielblack··on Does listening to music while programming a bad habit?
Besides, in open space offices it's the only form of self defense.
gabrielblack··on The great Brazilian Sat-Hack crackdown (2009)
Cool. Apparently, a documentary related to these events was produced: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1894541/ Could be this one ( the quality is horrible ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veDZfejpbs8 More materials: https://spectregroup.wordpress.com/2009/04/24/brazilian-sate... If someone has more information, links are welcome.
gabrielblack··on The Day Google Left China People Left Flowers at the Beijing Office
Today seems different: https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2018/11/google-must-n...
gabrielblack··on What makes a great developer? A story of an extraordinary blacksmith
"He is a team player". Do you ever seen a team of blacksmiths forging a sword ? IMHO a blacksmith is the figure more distant than ever from the perfect team member. Do you know what a team member looks like ? An assembly line worker. But who want to be an assembly line guy ?
gabrielblack··on ASRock motherboard destroys Linux software RAID
Exactly !
gabrielblack··on Autonomous database from Oracle
Could I be skeptical affirming that this statements cold be "a little bit" exaggerated or questionable ? It seems the classic silver bullet:

"Eliminate manual database management Autonomous Database is the world’s first autonomous data management in the cloud to deliver automated patching, upgrades, and tuning—including performing all routine database maintenance tasks while the system is running—without human intervention. This new autonomous database is self-driving, self-securing, and self-repairing, which helps to eliminate manual database management and human errors".

"Traditional database clouds are manually managed and tuned, subject to human error, and easily exposed to costly security vulnerabilities, making the promise of cloud savings and efficiency unattainable. Oracle is using machine learning to revolutionize data management with the introduction of the world’s first autonomous database, delivering more automation for more savings. - Recovers automatically from any failure - 99.995 percent uptime including maintenance, guaranteed - Elastically scales compute or storage as needed with no downtime"

gabrielblack··on Someone claims to have hacked ProtonMail
Goofy hoax:

"The alleged hacker has been busy posting to various image boards and stating that they would send $20 in bitcoin to anyone who spread the word about this hack using the #Protonmail hashtag on Twitter". https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/hacker-say-th...

"A closer reading of some of the claims, e.g. "circumventing the Geneva convention, underwater drone activities in the Pacific Ocean, and possible international treaty violations in Antarctica", etc, should also cause a reasonable observer to draw the same conclusion". https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/9xjrch/protonma...

gabrielblack··on Build a do-it-yourself IMSI Catcher for about $20
Exactly, I've a "premium" RTL-SDR and I se only the traffic on 900 MHz band. A more expensive SDR is required to sniff seriously. This is amateur hardware, professional hardware ( as the models described in the Snowden's documents ) can reach 100k E or more. That hardware can elaborate every frequency, more frequency in parallel with maximum reliability, a 20$ hardware simply can't. A good compromise can be one of the commercial SDR like Lime, etc.
gabrielblack··on Build a do-it-yourself IMSI Catcher for about $20
Tested now. It works just fine, with the proper antenna. RTL-SDR is a receiver, with this toy you can only sniff some non-encrypted data exchange between the phones and the cell towers, for example IMSI numbers (as its name explains ). You can't do MITM attacks or intercept anything.
gabrielblack··on Ask HN: Do you own any vintage computers?
- Some old rs/6000;

- Some Sun Ultrasparc based;

- Some DEC/Compaq Alpha based;

- Some HP Itanium based;

gabrielblack··on Ask HN: What would a better C look like?
Probably nobody needs a "better C" being possible to use C++ in procedural way, avoiding that C parts considered error prone, ugly or dangerous (i.e. using C++ string, smart pointers, etc). However, if we are talking about a different language, not a C improvement, I think Go could be the answer.
gabrielblack··on Ask HN: How to convince my manager to go with Angular instead of React?

gabrielblack··on [dead]
... and spam generator. Sadly from recruiters, too.
gabrielblack··on How I made my own RFID tag [video]
Someone did purchase some ACF and can recommend a seller?
gabrielblack··on Did I Make a Mistake Selling Del.icio.us to Yahoo?
From my user point of view, yes, you did. Something nice now is dead.
