gaadd33··on The Long, Sad History of American Attempts to Build High-Speed Rail, Part II
People already commute via trains from NYC to Philly, no need to maglev to make it reasonable. Some of the other ones (NYC to Pittsburgh for example) run into the same issues with maglev as normal rails do, namely geography.

But it would be great if all of those were connected by regular 200mph rails, 300mph maglev would be even better. I don't think there's the appetite for the level of investment either one would take.

gaadd33··on The Long, Sad History of American Attempts to Build High-Speed Rail, Part II
Brightline built Miami to West Palm Beach on rails it already owned, I think much of the new extension from West Palm Beach to Orlando has been on existing rails too.

Do trains require more staff per seat? Amtrak trains seem to have 2 staff in the car and I assume 2 engineers, and roughly (5 car consist of 72 seats) 360 passengers, vs 4-6 people for 180 people on an A320.

gaadd33··on Starlink is now available across the United States
It's probably not the entire country, more likely it's the area or the tower he's able to reach. But it would be interesting to know if it's like remote towers on an unpopulated Bahamian island or more major areas.
gaadd33··on The German group buying ticket dodgers out of prison
Why didn't EU261 apply to your flights? They seem like they should have qualified and you would have gotten a few hundred euros in addition to the new flight. There are a number of services which will pursue Lufthansa on your behalf for a part of the compensation you are awarded. Or is Lufthansa somehow exempt from EU261?
gaadd33··on Americas richest 10% is responsible for 40% of its planet heating pollution
English isn't your native language is it? The it's refers to America's warming. English isn't simple so it's an understandable mistake to make.
gaadd33··on New York’s crackdown on Airbnb began Tuesday
If real estate agents in NYC can do that I would be very impressed given they generally struggle to find and rent apartments when given basic criteria as to what is acceptable. It would definitely improve the entire profession if they could replace airbnb.
gaadd33··on The Scourge of Airport Noise
The Lufthansa first class lounges/terminal were mid compared to United's business class lounge? I could understand that if you are in the Lufthansa Senator lounges, those are the business class and star alliance lounges.

What made the United's business class lounge better than something like the first class terminal at FRA and directly being dropped off at your plane?

gaadd33··on Internet providers that won FCC grants try to escape broadband commitments
Someone should just lobby the FCC under the group "coalition of RDOF success" and say they don't need anything and that the FCC should penalize any winner who doesn't deliver 2x the amount of their award.

No need to disclose who is part of the group, it could be anyone or no one just like this group.

gaadd33··on Iceland: The emerging tech-ecosystem of the Nordics
Isn't Iceland significantly more expensive to live in than the majority of Europe? Not specifically housing cost but everything else.
gaadd33··on Chinese Businesses Fueling the Fentanyl Epidemic Receive Millions in Crypto
Aren't Americans of German descent the largest group in the country? I didn't think that Americans of English/British descent were anywhere close (I would guess third at best, after Irish descent)
gaadd33··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
Acela in the NE Corridor exists as does Virgin Trains (post COVID it's operated under the name Brightline) from Miami to Orlando.

Only 2 of the 4 you listed haven't come to fruition.

gaadd33··on Drug shortages have worsened and may only increase in the future, experts say
What part of the DEA ensures drug quality? I thought that was in the realm of the FDA?
gaadd33··on California approves rule phasing out big diesel trucks and buses in 2036
You know people who own big rigs to show off? I haven't really seen people driving those as personal vehicles before, the closest I've seen are F550 based RVs since smaller truck chassis wouldn't be legal or able to carry that much weight.
gaadd33··on We need better support for SSH host certificates
MX records don't fit into the "only for name resolution" mantra either but no one has advocated that we stop using those have they? That also ignores all of the other record types that aren't just for name resolution too.
gaadd33··on My startup banking story
I don't think that's relevant to the post though. It's essentially saying that a big bank has bankers that want to check on accounts once they get large enough and he didn't understand that
gaadd33··on My startup banking story
How could have Chase earned their business better when the person on the account says everything is fine and gets off the phone as fast as possible? I'm pretty sure more phone calls would have soured things. If the author was saying that chase then turned them down for a loan or something, sure that would be comparable.
gaadd33··on Elizabeth Holmes bought one-way ticket to Mexico after convicted of fraud
How do you get through the Darién Gap? Just hack your own road?
gaadd33··on Airbnb removed my negative review
Given the extremely similar structure in operation (residents are elected to the board, control maintenance fees, etc) and that insurance companies consider them the same for insuring purposes, what makes condos significantly worse than co-ops (which have been around for ~150 years)?
gaadd33··on The cost of cheap TVs
TV's have 5g modems and activated sim cards in them? Has anyone taken one apart and tested if the sim card could be used elsewhere? Seems like a great target for people who want free internet access.
gaadd33··on Airbnb removed my negative review
"People owning fractional buildings" has existed for almost 150 years, at what point should we start to see NYC buildings collapsing due to structural collapse?
gaadd33··on Jeff Bezos' 127M sailing yacht has completed construction
"mm" is frequently used in finance and probably predates the existence of CPM
gaadd33··on Google admits to violating federal law and plans to keep doing it
Is there a reason you haven't talked to or mentioned the company providing the payment plan? "Google Store Financing is a credit card account issued and serviced solely by Synchrony Bank" and "Credit card application decisions are made solely by Synchrony Bank."
gaadd33··on Show HN: AI Powered Bloomberg Terminal Alternative for Individuals
It doesn't seem to have chat which from what I've heard is one of (if not the) most valuable part of Bloomberg Terminal. From a quick read of the landing page linked, it seems to just be an analysis platform, not the full fledged platform that Bloomberg is.
gaadd33··on PayPal inactivity fee
Why is Paypal G&S a better standard than normal credit card protection? Also if part of their offerings is something that is the gold standard in fraud detection and similar, why are there a bagillion of compromised accounts?
gaadd33··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
Yep they are filed with the SEC, you can see one of them here: https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1418091/000119312521...
gaadd33··on Musk’s inner circle worked through weekend to cement Twitter layoff plans
Did Twitter already file a WARN act notice about the layoffs? If not, how can it be justified under that?
gaadd33··on Home buyers flock to Florida cities devastated by Hurricane Ian
Are you sure it's due to risk assessment for climate change and not the huge amount of fraud and litigation? I've heard that something like 80% of all homeowners insurance lawsuits have been from Florida despite only having 9% of claims. When I looked into the issue that was the driving cause I found, it would be good to read some info about the climate change assessment making it into their decision to pull out.

Disclaimer: Also in South Florida

gaadd33··on Ask HN: What Happens to Older Designers?
I'm curious, do you really not stay in contact with anyone you have worked with in the past in any capacity? Or is it more that they wouldn't work with you again?

Just curious since even as someone who sucks at "networking" and that sort of thing, I feel like I've worked with people that we mutually respect each other's skill regardless if it's direct reporting lines.

gaadd33··on Ask HN: What Happens to Older Designers?
Can you cite a lawsuit over discrimination when someone referred the candidate and that's the aspect in contention?
gaadd33··on Starlink Aviation
I didn't think a lot of the cities can get fiber to the home. I know I can't in NYC and when I was in LA, nor in Ft Lauderdale. Is it easier in most other big cities?
