fyrabanks··on Celebrating 45 Years of Kermit with the First New C-Kermit Release in 15 Years
ok but what's the anime 'checking if you're not a bot' gatekeeper? asking for a friend...
fyrabanks··on All major LLMs are lib-left. Even Grok, half the time
"Read that list back. Pro-regulation on companies, live-and-let-live on private life. That combination is the lib-left quadrant, definitionally."

if this is the definition of "lib-left," i don't think we have too much to be worried about being "off center" with models.

fyrabanks··on I Like Small Keyboards
thanks, me too. the one big disadvantage here, if you have to go into an office, is either having to own multiple or transporting your keyboard back and forth every day.

there was a period where i was doing standard + ortho Plank + an ErgoDox-like on three different machines and it's a bit of a mindfuck context switching between them. extremely inefficient.

fyrabanks··on Microsoft Needs Windows Lite
great post. the only thing that was tying me to Windows at home was gaming. after Proton, that became irrelevant. (maybe it'd be different if I played competitive multiplayer games.)

curious, though--why hasn't your friend updated his Arch distro in 3 years? bleeding edge is one of the benefits vs other distros, IMHO

fyrabanks··on Claude Fable 5

fyrabanks··on Social media bans for teenagers lack evidence and pose risks, scientists say
not to sound callous, but that's not good parenting.

my partner and i have reasonably good jobs, but we work 12-14hrs. we make mortgage and have some extra money. we are currently debating whether or not it is financially, morally, or ethically responsible to bring a child into this world and be able to provide them with the attention that they need and deserve.

fyrabanks··on Social media bans for teenagers lack evidence and pose risks, scientists say
good parenting, as always, remains the best solution
fyrabanks··on DuckDuckGo search saw 28% more visits after Google said people love AI mode
only time i ever have to deal with this anywhere (and i move physical sites a lot) is when using a commercial VPN provider. odd.
fyrabanks··on AI didn't delete your database, you did
Thank you. Exactly this.

There were so many fundamental problems with the infrastructure even before the person gave a poor prompt to an agent.

If you're using the same API key for staging and prod--and just storing it somewhere randomly to forget about--you're setting yourself up for failure with or without AI.

fyrabanks··on 10 years: Stephen's Sausage Roll still one of the most influential puzzle games
i so badly want to spoil the story of stephen's sausage roll for you. i feel bad even spoiling that there is a story. play it.
fyrabanks··on WiiFin – Jellyfin Client for Nintendo Wii
Subtitle settings turn off between episodes

you can enable global subtitles in settings.

Let me sort by file size so I can watch the disk gobbling files first

you can kinda deduce that if you sort by bitrate.

it sounds like you figured out a solution for yourself, already, but there's a lot of existing utilities like tinyMediaManager, WebTools-NG, Raddarr, Sonarr, etc. for doing media management. Plex is just a media server/player.

fyrabanks··on Claude.ai down
Yeah, sems fine?
fyrabanks··on Tailscale's new macOS home
they kindamostly cared when it was OS X. everything's been a bit of a mess since it became macOS while trying to make a unified platform for all their hardware
fyrabanks··on Why vampires live forever
does this imply that you're just giving shitty blood to people that need life saving procedures?
fyrabanks··on Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Technical Info
Same. I built my first wheel according to his specs. His whole website is so helpful and thoughtfully written. RIP.
fyrabanks··on Helldivers 2 on-disk size 85% reduction
There were 20 people working on this game when they started development. Total. I think they expanded to a little over 100. This isn't some huge game studio that has time to do optimization.

GTA5 had well over 1000 people on its team.

fyrabanks··on Paramount launches hostile bid for Warner Bros
Netflix also wants HBO / HBO Max. They're just leaving the Discovery stuff.
fyrabanks··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
The Pitt, The Penguin, Hacks, White Lotus, The Rehearsal, The Last of Us, The Chair Company--all shows off the top of my head that debuted or aired a season in 2025. A few of which won several Emmys, and all of which are critically acclaimed.
fyrabanks··on Show HN: Autism Simulator
Buproprion is an anti-depressent with some stimulant properties, but it isn't a stimulant. It generally takes several weeks of treatment before it has any therapeutic effects on ADHD. Stimulants work immediately.
fyrabanks··on Hunter S Thompson's death to be reviewed more than 20 years later
Channel 5 with Andrew Callaghan is essentially the evolution of gonzo journalism.
fyrabanks··on Yt-dlp: Upcoming new requirements for YouTube downloads
i use this for things i repost on IG with commentary. i would rather not have a huge folder of downloads of random stuff i'm not even sure i want to revisit. (and i'm bad about clearing out space on my phone.)
fyrabanks··on Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is coming to Playstation 5 on December 8th
even PlayStation exclusives are showing up on PC/other platforms later... Last of Us Remastered, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, FF7 Remake, etc.

the only reason to buy a traditional console these days if you want day 1 access to a game.

fyrabanks··on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version
fwiw, my wife played through it on SD while i played through on my PC. it's a completely different experience, but it's very do-able. she also went on to replay it 4 more times after that, which is 5 more times than i finished the game.
fyrabanks··on Home Depot sued for 'secretly' using facial recognition at self-checkouts
I was at a Whole Foods last year and was tired from driving for about 6hrs straight. I scanned one item, set up a paper bag on the right, and then mindlessly bagged every other item in my cart without scanning. I paid probably $3-4 on a $60 purchase.

As soon as I got to the hotel and figured it out, I went back to correct the mistake--but imagine getting harassed or taken to the back for a careless error? I'm sure that happens more often than I hear about.

(PS I am genuinely surprised their weight sensor, that flags an attendant, didn't go off. That thing usually trips if you breathe on it funny.)

I understand where you’re coming from, but there isn’t a incongruity. Individual stock investments are a relatively small part of my overall portfolio.

fyrabanks··on NautilusTrader: Open-source algorithmic trading platform
High reward, high risk. I have a day job and don't really want to sweat the details. I have over 140% gain on my long term holdings this year alone--with continued investment and on top of compounding from two decades. I'm quite happy as a Boglehead.
fyrabanks··on Double is winding down
I have money in a Fidelity retirement fund and have invested additional money into Vanguard funds. Additionally, Schwab Intelligent Portfolios have treated me well. That portfolio has total unrealized gains of +37.27%. I have read lots of anecdotal stories of people taking losses using it, though, so YMMV.
fyrabanks··on The group chats that changed America
This is fairly anecdotal.
fyrabanks··on uBlock Origin is no longer available on the Chrome Store
You can still install uBlock Origin in Brave, assuming you don't mind the crypto stuff and how they pay it out (or, rather don't) to site owners. Even Firefox feels a little weird now with the advent of Mozilla Advertising.

Very much a lesser of all evils situation.

fyrabanks··on Backblaze Drive Stats for 2024
I almost cannot believe I've been reading these for 10 years now.
