fwungy··on Why people still fall for fake news about climate change
It's not that I don't believe but rather I don't see how the proposed solutions address serious economic and international relations problems that need to be solved.

The first is how to compensate oil producers for lost wealth, because if you don't compensate them they'll find ways to keep selling. The second is what to do about the China and India, who are critical to an effective response due to their size and influence but are also under developmental and economic pressures that conflict with serious climate change policies.

That leaves the UN pushing a lot of expensive policies onto the G7 nations, who are all struggling economically, with the hardest part of the plan (above) almost completely unsolved.

The reality is,unfortunately, that the disparate interests are not going to united to fight climate change under UN leadership. This is an intractable problem. In that case the G7 nations should be planning around mitigation and next generation nuclear power rather than fanciful and expensive "green" schemes that will only serve to crush the middle classes of those nations while yielding no relief.

The code I get from LLMs is only as good as StackOverflow and will often send you in the wrong direction if you don't know what it's doing.

The part of programming LLMs solve is the easiest part.

fwungy··on Are electric cars too expensive to tempt motorists away from petrol vehicles?
They need to incorporate a large, heavy battery that needs to sit at the bottom of the vehicle for stability. That means a large footprint to keep a low roofline, or a high roofline for a smaller footprint. All EVs must work battery and range into their aesthetics, and it's a design imposition. The Tesla Roadster looked good, but it was a based on a Lotus ICE and traded interior space for aesthetics, as well as limited range: too impractical for most.

The Prius looks dull because it's tuned for ultimate efficiency while also paying a small roofline/footprint penalty for its battery in aesthetics. It would be interesting to see what a max efficiency ICE Prius would be like. I bet it could do high 30's mpg, maybe even 40, would look better, and be substantially cheaper.

fwungy··on Ex-Facebook diversity manager pleads guilty to bilking $4M from company
If you're a person of color, better yet a woman, you can hire yourself out to front a company. That puts the company at the front of the line for government contracts, as well as contracts funded by government money indirectly. You get 30%!

Completely legal.

fwungy··on Harvard president to remain after anger over testimony on antisemitism
I don't know if you've written a dissertation, but I have. The Crimson examples are flagrant.

If she was a nobody humanities prof at a little liberal arts college nobody would care, but she's at the top role of banner institution.

It doesn't look good.

No surprise that the Harvard paper is defending her.

I'm close enough to this to know it's true, but O'Keefe has certainly hyped it.

As an Asian I'm really bothered that Krishna does not recognize us as a discriminated against group.

fwungy··on Harvard president to remain after anger over testimony on antisemitism
Flagrant plagiarism on her dissertation too.

How could she have gotten so far in her career with that dissertation openly available?

fwungy··on OpenAI employees did not want to go work for Microsoft
As if OpenAI employees would have any problem landing a new gig...

Going from an agile startup environment to an F50 is a huge leap culturally. It's like going from Summer science camp to the army.

fwungy··on Saving CO2 using location and time shifting in Azure
Unfortunately what we learned in the pandemic is that "science" is a thing that happens behind closed doors and is then forced down the public's throat without allowance for public discussion or dissent.

Good science can stand questions and discussion, that's how it's done. Given anthropogenic climate change is a real factor there are a lot of possible courses of response to it. Shutting down conversation by shaming is not going to build trust, and trust is vital for a meaningful climate change response.

fwungy··on I worked in Amazon HR and was disgusted at what I was seeing with PIP plans
PIP is part of the game. Everybody knows that it's a bad indicator of capabilities on its own.

A PIP can happen for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with the employee's performance, and often does.

A PIP or two won't be held again anyone on its own.

fwungy··on Rolls-Royce calls off bets on electric planes, says low-carbon fuel is future
Fuel weight for liquid fuel at start of flight: 10x Fuel weight for liquid fuel at end of flight: 3x

Fuel weight for battery at start of flight: 100x Fuel weight for battery at end of flight: 100x

Batteries are not a great idea for a planes primary energy source. Liquid fueled planes get lighter and more efficient as they fly, a battery plane starts with a much larger and heavier fuel load and carries it the whole trip. Not only that, battery costs a lot more than fuel tanks.

fwungy··on Sorry you feel that way: why passive aggression took over the world
Historians of the future will have been trained in the postmodernist university system of today.

The core tenet of postmodernism is that there is no objective truth, everything we see in the world is a societal/human construct. It's a pants-on-head extremist outloook that allows absolute insanity to parade as intelligence. It's reasonable to assume that there is at least some semblance of objective truth and argue about the degrees.

fwungy··on Sodium in Batteries: Shift May Herald Another Shakeup
Battery tech has deep and extensive research behind it. It is unlikely that a revolutionary breakthrough will happen at this point. Batteries have to balance so many factors: energy density, safety, cost, reliability, recharge characteristics, and they're all really important. We are in the incremental phase of battery technology advancement now. The options and their drawbacks are all well known.

fwungy··on Is the US's vaccine adverse event reporting system broken?
There is no enforcement. Nothing bad happens to the provider if she forgets or thinks the reaction has another cause.
fwungy··on Is the US's vaccine adverse event reporting system broken?
> "The National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, as amended, created a unique mechanism for compensating persons injured by vaccinations. The National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (the "VICP" or the "Program") (42 U.S.C. §§ 300aa-10 et seq.) is an alternative to traditional products liability and medical malpractice litigation for persons injured by their receipt of one or more of the standard childhood vaccines."[0]

NCVIA was passed because of lawsuits over the Pertussis vaccine that were so extensive it threatened the entire vaccine industry. Rather than go back to the industry and say that you need to show that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks with actual data, and not industry funded models, they just decided to hand liability to the taxpayer, through an excise tax. But the same taxpayer pays for healthcare too, don't they have a right to know if a treatment actually works, especially if it's required or requested to attend school/work?

fwungy··on Is the US's vaccine adverse event reporting system broken?
That's absolutely wrong.

Reporting to VAERS is voluntary. Doctors in your typical HMO practice are extremely busy and highly time managed. They need to be keeping up a high rate of patient visits and doing all the paperwork for each of them.

They aren't paid to report to VAERS, it's just another thing to do in a very busy and exhausting day.

If you want to make VAERS into actually usable data doctors should have to report any significant internal change to a patient's health within 72 hours of the vaccine administration, and non-doctor reports should have their own channel because the data quality is likely to be lower. Doctors also need to have some time credit from their employer for handling VAERS reporting.

I'm commenting confidently because I know of what I speak.

fwungy··on Ask HN: CDK vs. Terraform – which one do you prefer and why?
Depends.

Terraform can get ugly for a large codebase. You have a lot of power with an actual programming language instead of YAML. But CDK is more complicated and the learning curve is higher.

My preference would be Terraform for small-mid sized infra and CDK for larger installations where code abstraction and reuse was more important.

But they both disappoint in their own ways. Orchestration is the great unsolved problem of the cloud.
