fvrghl··on Qualcomm to Acquire Modular
I have a friend who works at Modular. FWIU, the employees got shafted by the acquisition financially.
fvrghl··on iPhone Pocket
Are you familiar with Miyake's work? He did a lot of innovative design with synthetics, including the entire Pleats Please line.
fvrghl··on Boring Company cited for almost 800 environmental violations in Las Vegas
This is how parking tickets work in NYC. FedEx, etc negotiate down the total amount they have to pay because they have so many tickets.
fvrghl··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
Is there anyone making full wool underwear? Everything is a blend, which is good for durability.
fvrghl··on An opinionated critique of Duolingo
What is a non-opinionated critique?
fvrghl··on 'Block Everything' protests sweep across France, scores arrested
If you had invested the 83k in the S&P500, you'd be slightly ahead I think if you include maintenance and property taxes.

fvrghl··on VA Tech scientists are building a better fog harp
Never heard it pronounced that way in my life. Either "Tech" or "GT".
fvrghl··on The great displacement is already well underway?
Not NY, NY:

"in fact I own three houses: A fixer-upper starter home in a rust belt upstate New York university city, and a patch of beautiful remote rural land with 2 pretty humble and simple cabins on it an hour from the city house"

fvrghl··on NYC home prices rise 10% in early 2025
Source? NYC chronically under builds. It's ranked #35 in new housing construction: https://constructioncoverage.com/research/cities-investing-m...
fvrghl··on Reports of the death of California High-Speed Rail have been greatly exaggerated
The flight doesn’t include the time to get to and from the airport plus TSA screening.

I greatly prefer taking a train because I can just show up and go.

fvrghl··on A Ford executive who kept score of colleagues' verbal flubs
Do you pronounce it as Wed-nes-day?

I've never heard it as anything but Wends-day, but maybe everyone else is wrong.

fvrghl··on The Insanity of Being a Software Engineer
Can you give your salary (or a range)?

Seems shocking that a SV swe would make what a mech eng makes after 4 years.

fvrghl··on Where does air pollution come from?
Does anyone have advice for how to balance air purification with CO2 levels? My apartment will sit at around 1200 PPM if the windows are closed, but if they are open I would think running a purifier does nothing.

What is bad about overcast?
fvrghl··on Why Western designs fail in developing countries [video]
The mosquito-nets-as-fishing-nets story is covered in the video.
fvrghl··on Millions of Taxpayers Call the IRS for Help. Two-Thirds Don't Reach Anyone
A majority doesn't mean much these days. A supermajority is necessary to get things passed that the other side doesn't agree with [1].

The democrats haven't had a supermajority since 2011 [2].

fvrghl··on How Shadow Banning Can Silently Shift Opinion Online
No, the author of the tweet states it is fake in the following tweet. It's just a hypothetical.
fvrghl··on How Condé Nast bought and destroyed Pitchfork
Wikipedia says otherwise:

"On September 8, 2011, the company was acquired by Google for more than $150 million, the 10th largest acquisition by Google as of that date, at the championing of Marissa Mayer, its Vice President of Local, Maps, and Location Services."

fvrghl··on Rare video of Cloudlfare firing an employee
Generally in the US, you don’t get unemployment if you are fired for cause.

Cloudfare is trying to make it seems like it’s termination for cause instead of a layoff.

fvrghl··on Cloudflare Termination Video: A Master Class in How Not to Terminate Someone
In the US, that does not happen. The expectation is someone only gets terminated in the first year if they are terrible. Unless it’s a tiny startup, such a stint would raise concerns.
fvrghl··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024)
If I had to guess, it's because it's been reposted every month for the last several "Who's hiring" threads.
fvrghl··on New York restaurants fight back against reservations by bots
That fee would just be passed from the scalper to the buyer of the reservation.
fvrghl··on After a $1.8B verdict, the clock is ticking on the 6% realtor commission
Most people are against tipping [1], but we are forced to because of societal pressure.

I posted this over the weekend, but I didn't get many answers. Trying again during the work week.
fvrghl··on Ask HN: Reputable SWE Resume Review?
Neetcode seems to skew junior from my first look. I'm looking for help with senior positions.
fvrghl··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2023)
Do you provide visas?
fvrghl··on Ask HN: What do startups look for in a resume?
I'm looking for a new job, and a 3rd party recruiter focused on startups asked me to follow a template that "lands well with startups". FWIW, my resume has been doing fine with Big Co's so I thought it wasn't worthwhile advice.
