fv3y··on Pointing AI at archives found a forgotten meteorite, lost rhinos, and more
The big problem with this argument is that the current owners of frontier models are actively working against these ideals.

Many people, including myself, would feel very differently if models were open(and not just open weights), compute/resources were cheap enough to enable local access and ownership.

Unfortunately, despite what they may say in press releases, a lot of people in the space are banking on holding a stranglehold over the market and building a regulatory and resource moat to protect their investment.

Of course there is the argument that they deserve some return on the investment in training but lets not forget that it is our work, the work of the commons, that enabled it in the first place. People are frustrated that a small group of people endeavour to control the use of a tool that was created using the work, thoughts and content of us all, often using questionably legal means.

fv3y··on Reverse engineering my ADHD test
I'm still on my journey of finding meds (and dosages) that work but I would highly recommend for anyone who has a inattentive scatterbrain to try lis/dexamphetamine.

Methylphenidates can be quite numbing (zombifying) in my group of ADHD friends but dex seems to have a more consistenly helpful effect. The unfortunate caveat for me is that I personally seem predisposed to pelvic floor/urinary issues, which you'll find anecdotal evidence of being exacerbated by amphetamines (research seems yet to catch up), but aside from that the theraputic effects, particularly in emotional regulation seem so far unmatched.

It's unfortunate we have such a tentative model of how our body and, particularly, our minds work so drug treatments often require a trial and error process.

The poster has conflated two different projects with a similar goal I believe.

The videos seem to come from a closed source project made by an outlet called Grow Now Games.

fv3y··on We don't use AI in any of our design or production processes
Isn't one of the original purposes of HN not discussion and curiosity for purpose of learning and widening our perspectives? The discourse here is some of the most reasonable on the internet (usually), and nothing is better for us to challenge and assess our positions.

I myself am relatively cautious about AI, mostly due to ethical concerns, yet I often open AI related threads to be informed and hear differing perspectives and arguments.

A Hacker News without open conversations and opposing views is a Hacker News that has lost its way and, at least imo, lost its value.

fv3y··on New Zealand startup successfully launches rocket
New Zealand's anti-nuclear stance has nothing to do with nuclear power. The reason we don't allow American warships into our waters is because we disapprove of nuclear weapons, whether powered by or as a payload.
