fuzzylightbulb··on Facebook blocks links to Pixelfed, a federated Instagram alternative
What free speech? Facebook always reserved the right to control what is published on their platform. Facebook has never been about "freedoms" of any kind, why is this recent news surprising in the least?
fuzzylightbulb··on Used Meta AI, now Instagram is using my face on ads targeted at me
My time is not free. My attention is not something I've ceded control of to HBO to do whatever the hell they please just because I want to watch The Sopranos.
fuzzylightbulb··on Who killed the rave? Late-night dancing falls into global decline
Are you by chance referring to the time that "...a Chicago DJ named Steve Dahl detonated a dumpster filled with disco records between White Sox games at Comiskey Park, leading to a riot"?

fuzzylightbulb··on NYC Congestion Pricing Tracker
That is literally what the money is for
fuzzylightbulb··on Used Meta AI, now Instagram is using my face on ads targeted at me
There's no cost to watch other shows on HBO, but the 2 minute promo they play for a different HBO show before playing the show you requested is 100% an ad.
fuzzylightbulb··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
There was a period where Google Assistant was so useful. Could control phone functions, set events, reminders, alarms, change volume, reliabily message someone. It's wild to think through all the things it used to do well that it simply cannot do today.
fuzzylightbulb··on The Adrian Dittmann Story
I care about a well functioning democracy that serves the populace infinitely more than I care about tesla or spacex. His accomplishments mean nothing relative to his active destruction of a just and functional society for regular people. The ends do not justify his means.

And that's to say nothing of how completely insufferable musk and his apologists are.

fuzzylightbulb··on Microsoft will try the data-scraping Windows Recall feature again in October
Are we about to have the year of the Linux desktop?
fuzzylightbulb··on My favorite device is a Chromebook
Can I ask what made you move on? I'm still using mine for basic tasks from the couch and as a travel device. It's perfect for taking to a cafe and crushing some email for a few hours. And the screen is a beauty.
fuzzylightbulb··on Meta removes Trump account restrictions ahead of 2024 election
> Donald Trump’s animosity toward Mark Zuckerberg is getting even more heated. In a post on Truth Social on Tuesday, the former president threatened to put “election fraudsters” in jail, name-checking the Meta founder in the process. [1]

That was three days ago. A few months back he called Facebook "the enemy of the people". I will never understand why these platforms bend over backward to accommodate the guy who would destroy their entire business if he felt it personally advantageous. It feels like a modern, business-specific twist on the paradox of tolerance.

fuzzylightbulb··on Tour de France: How professional cycling teams eat and cook on the road
Mechanical doping, a problem so wide-spread that only one person at the elite level has ever been found to have been doing it. To date, no one has ever provided hard evidence of another rider using a motor. I am not saying that this doesn't happen at the amateur level (it certainly does) but to imply that this is a pervasive problem in elite cycling is little more than a baseless conspiracy theory until someone shows up with some actual evidence of motors being used in major events.

Ghost in the Machine [1] is a great podcast on this topic.

fuzzylightbulb··on Post on Reddit unveils college student's fraud: 'I have built my life on lies'
"And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for ~~you meddling kids~~ my crazy decision to completely out myself before I get my degree!"

Dude could have used a burner account if he felt he needed to get something off his chest. He clearly was very self motivated

fuzzylightbulb··on Supreme Court blocks controversial Purdue Pharma opioid settlement
Nor should it be. These people are leeches whose very existence is antithetical to a healthy and just society. They've done immeasurable damage and then hide behind the courts to avoid any repercussions. Disgusting, the lot of them.
fuzzylightbulb··on DOJ compares AAPL share buybacks with R&D as 'evidence' of lack of competition
Apple isnt being sued because they make nice hardware that people like to buy. They're being sued because they use their position in the marketplace to stifle competition, restrict developer choices, and lock customers into their ecosystem.

The DOJ wrote up their exact rationale for the suit, so it would be nice if people would take the time to understand the actual situation instead of arguing against their prefered strawman.

I will never understand why people are out there falling over each other to be the white knight for a company with a 2.6 trillion dollar market cap.

fuzzylightbulb··on Copy/paste plain text should be the default

fuzzylightbulb··on Note Hacker
Very cool. I wish it had the option to use local time of day rather than starting from 0:00:00. But on the whole I like it a lot!
fuzzylightbulb··on Female saboteurs who poisoned 46 Russian soldiers in Crimea are on the run
Poisoned a bunch of soldiers in a few separate incidents, then they shoot their way out when the occupiers come to arrest them killing a few more officers in the process and getting away? I would watch this movie.
fuzzylightbulb··on Al Gore Leaves Board. Tim Cook's Pay Dropped 36% After Shareholder Pressure
I feel like a former VPOTUS probably knows a thing or two about operating a large organization. Probably has a hell of a roladex, too.
fuzzylightbulb··on More Americans can now get insulin for $35
The recent news is leaps and bounds beyond the token efforts by the previous administration.

https://apnews.com/article/fact-checking-845638742817 [ Separately, the Trump administration implemented a program in which some Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans voluntarily set the maximum copay for insulin at $35 per month. However, not all insulin products are necessarily covered by the plans that participate. It also does not affect costs for people who are uninsured or have other coverage.

That program remains in place, and Cubanski pointed out that the Biden administration supported expanding that initiative. A provision under the idling Build Back Better Act would have applied it to private insurers, for example.

That legislation also proposed allowing Medicare to negotiate the prices of certain drugs, including insulin. ]

fuzzylightbulb··on SpaceX is suing to bust up federal union protections
“Elon’s behavior in the public sphere is a frequent source of distraction and embarrassment for us, particularly in recent weeks,” the employees wrote. The letter, which welcomed other employees’ signatures, called for SpaceX to distance itself from Musk’s controversial online comments.
fuzzylightbulb··on SpaceX suit claims NLRB is unconstitutional
So the only thing that was "off" was that a penalty has yet to be assessed. Everything else holds up pretty darn well.
fuzzylightbulb··on SpaceX suit claims NLRB is unconstitutional
Article is paywalled but I imagine it is something like this:

-Employees said that Musk was a distraction.

-Employees got fired for what they said.

-Employees sued and the NLRB found their complaints had merit, some sort of "hey you're a big boy corporation now so grow up" penalty was assessed.

-SpaceX/Musk is now going after the NLRB.

It's amazing the amount of resources that are wasted soothing the egos of petulant children who happen to be extremely well off.

fuzzylightbulb··on More Americans can now get insulin for $35
"it's not our fault, we had to price gouge"

Yeah no. There is no benign justification for the three main insulin manufacturers raising prices in lockstep like the cartel they are.

fuzzylightbulb··on More Americans can now get insulin for $35
For real. It's like if outlets were writing stories praising generous employers for paying the minimum wage permitted by law.

This 100% happened because of the Biden Administration got the Inflation Reduction Act passed, which has resulted in a cap on the price of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries by allowing the government to negotiate the price of certain drugs.

fuzzylightbulb··on VMware transition to subscription, end of sale of perpetual licenses
Acropolis is free but severely limits your choices when it comes to hardware and expansion down the line. I always felt like you were putting yourself over a barrel to consolidate both hypervisor and physical infrastructure to a single vendor.
fuzzylightbulb··on VMware transition to subscription, end of sale of perpetual licenses
Microsoft is ending mainstream support of Hyper-V Server 2019 on January 9, 2024 and extended support will end on January 9, 2029. Hyper-V Server 2019 will be the last version of this product and Microsoft is encouraging customers to transition to Azure Stack HCI.

fuzzylightbulb··on Build your own hi-fi ear defenders
Eargasm earplugs come with a little metal screw together case that can go on your keyring. It feels indestructible and keeps the dirt and grime out. Absolute game changer to have them on your person by default.
fuzzylightbulb··on Instagram's Toxic Video Mix for Adults Who Follow Children
Archive.ph blocks some dns providers. Cloud flare is one of the impacted dns providers. Because cloud flare does not pass along some location specific information that archive.ph can use for tracking, archive.ph returns garbage replies to cloud flare. This is why you get stuck in the loop
fuzzylightbulb··on X Corp. vs. Media Matters for America et al.
I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment, but it is nothing new. Peter Theil did the same to Gawker via Hulk Hogan a few years back.
