futevolei··on California Legalizes Balcony Solar
It could be that easy but it would serve you well to dig a little deeper into your energy usage to optimize the system. If your base load is around 250w/hr and you produce the full 1200 then you sending almost 1kwh back to the grid for free meaning you bought an extra 2 panels for nothing.

If your baseload is high, like 2kw/hr or more if you have an ev charger or pool pump or whatever but that load is mostly on the other phase then it is essentially the top scenario again. (There are two phases, L1 and L2 in the US so if ev charger is L2 and your plug in solar is L1 then there is no offset).

The ideal system will have a battery and a smart meter so you can really offset usage as much as possible and especially during on-peak time.

futevolei··on Batteries just broke another record in the US
I pray California is NOT the future of the US. I say that as a resident of the state. All those links you posted are great but I think only Hawaii has higher electricity prices that California? And Texas already has more wind and solar than California despite not giving any f*cks about the environment? Nah, US needs less California bs.
futevolei··on 1M+ German households have hung solar panels off their balcony railings
Plug in batteries where the battery itself is cheap af (like Australia) and the ability to charge it for free from the grid exists (like Australia) are a no brainer. When batteries are expensive and grid electricity is not free (the entire US) then it doesn’t really pencil out and requires the plug in solar but that has to be cheap too. Think used panels off Facebook marketplace type cheap. Like I don’t care about offsetting a portion of my energy for free with a 7-10 year payback. Plug in systems should pay for themselves in less than 2 years IMO.
futevolei··on California Lawmakers Pass Plug-In Solar Bill
Behind the meter yes but the meter does still need to be a smart meter and programmed correctly otherwise you could get billed for any extra power that is exported to the grid.
futevolei··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Are you asserting that supply chains in the year 2026 are more fragile than in 1877?
futevolei··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
People still actually pay attention to global warming forecasts? Err I mean climate change. I’m not a denier, in fact I’m quite a believer though not quite 100%, prolly closer to 80-90%. I mean the climate certainly changed a lot before humans. But count me out on people predicting 1.76 degrees higher next year…
futevolei··on In Australia, a home battery boom has helped cut wholesale power prices
Tell me more? Why can’t you 2x or nx the number of panels by wiring those additional panel in parallel (as opposed to in series)?
futevolei··on Balcony Solar: $1.74/watt direct plug-in solar
Yeah you can do that. I’m not an electrician, I was raised in a family with multiple union electricians though so I know enough to be dangerous. You would need a new “home run” cable from the outlet to your main panel and this assumes your panel has space for another breaker. Snaking that cable through and stapling it so there are no loose wires will probably require breaking drywall along the path. As for the existing wires, I think best case would be if the outside outlet was the last outlet in the circuit. Then you can just disconnect them from the plug and cap them off and label as abandoned. If it’s not the last outlet but rather in between then I think you need to snake new wire to reconnect the outlets on both sides directly but not sure.
futevolei··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
Yeah the only code compliant way this is possible is if an additional sub panel is installed and maybe/probably a transfer switch that needs to be manually pulled in order to disconnect the sub panel from the main panel. Possibly OP is confused about running in zero export mode? Would love to hear how we could be wrong…
futevolei··on Plug-In Solar Panels Starting to Sprout in U.S. Backyards
Yeah the truth is much closer to your experience than OP but, especially in California, there is a non-zero amount of people passing inspection but waiting a long time for the poco to give approval. Most delays don’t seem to be related to additional requirements but rather the poco just dragging its feet…
futevolei··on Balcony Solar: $1.74/watt direct plug-in solar
The devil is in the details of “a couple bathrooms”. Is it just led lights and ceiling fans? No problem, especially if it’s a 20A circuit. If for some reason you plug in a space heater and a hair dryer then you have issues. So you really to figure out what is/will be running to eliminate the risk of burning your house down.
futevolei··on EV battery recycling has a math problem
I had been getting suspicious about battery recycling for awhile now. Been hearing about that redwood company for a few years but only about their goal, not their actual results. Feels like battery recycling may just end up like every other recycling- pushed by environmentalist and backed by lies. Hopefully we get a real solution for it….
futevolei··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
Yeah yeah yeah he lies all the time but Tesla cars exist and are awesome and the company is worth more than all other car companies combined going on how many years now? Do you really believe you have some unique insight that the rest of the market has not discounted? Spacex was probably just over valued and this sell off has nothing to do with “people starting to finally wake up that he isn’t as good as his ego”. I suspect the best thing you could for yourself, at least as far as the stock market goes, is humbly acknowledge you know nothing and just buy index funds.
futevolei··on Supersonic flight returning to US after half-century ban
Please cite evidence confirming your assertion that air travel is becoming increasingly unaffordable for the average person.
futevolei··on Grand Theft Oil Futures: Insider traders keep making a killing at our expense
Look in the general sense that retail traders lose money you are right but that applies to all markets, sports betting and casinos. However I and many of my friends live in houses paid for with profits made from futures trading and none of us have inside info or supply commodities. It takes discipline, skill, risk management, emotional management and drive to make it happen but it does happen.
futevolei··on Donut Lab Announces Upcoming Independent Battery Measurements
Can’t wait to see what they release. There is apparently so much doubt against them that this isn’t even news. Like nobody knows or cares this is happening. If this was listed on polymarket it seems this would be trading at like 5 cents. I’d buy it too purely bc I think that’s way too cheap. No idea if that independent evaluator is legit or not. If true though wow what a game changer. I’m pulling for them.
futevolei··on 450× Faster Joins with Index Condition Pushdown
Do the db guys at your company help you optimize queries and table set up at all? Ours basically don’t at all. Their job is to maintain the db apparently and us devs are left to handle this and it seems wrong. I’ve been partitioning tables and creating indexes the past few weeks trying to speed up a view and running explain analyze and throwing the results in Gemini and my queries are still slow af. I had one sql class in college, it’s not my thing. Seems like if dbas would spend a few minutes with me asking about the data and what we are trying to do they could get this guys results relatively easily. Am I wrong?
futevolei··on Jane Street barred from Indian markets as regulator freezes $566M
“Manipulation” is what? You want to create a rule that says a firm can’t buy more than x shares/dollars/% in a certain amount of time? Or if it does it has to hold onto those shares for a minimum time? A firm should be able to buy as much as it wants, subject to its margin requirements, and then sell whenever it wants, be it one second, one minute, one hour, one day…later.
futevolei··on Jane Street barred from Indian markets as regulator freezes $566M
I’m not sure you are seeing it clearly..or have any trading experience whatsoever. They took substantial risk. There is always someone bigger so if they were wrong they could have been buried. Then they reversed. If there are allegations of insider trading or collusion or something else then I’m ready to pile on but I don’t see anything here.
futevolei··on DIY solar launches in US – no installers or permits needed
Grid-tied inverters only push power if it senses the grid. It’s a standard feature and has been around for years. Off grid inverters push no matter what. The situation you fear is somebody not knowing what kind they have and just plugging it in.
futevolei··on DIY solar launches in US – no installers or permits needed
Can you share your before and after bills? How long til you break even? What happens if you push 800w but your home is only using 300w? Without a clamp on main panel I don’t think it’s smart enough to know to push only 300 so does 500 go to the grid?
futevolei··on EcoFlow brings its plug-in solar power plant to US homes
I’m confused what ecoflow says. The Utah law says it must be a UL certified device. Ecoflow says something about not needing to wait for UL standard. Are they talking about the same thing? Or is ecoflow saying don’t need to wait for a UL standard for a receptacle but their micro inverter is UL certified?
futevolei··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
There was an article in the LATimes article a few years ago with the former ceo of Ticketmaster who explicitly confirmed the above. Ticketmaster does a deal with the band to charge as much as possible and take all the negative blowback or whatever about it and then gives them a kickback.
futevolei··on I nearly died drowning
I nearly drowned in my early 30s surfing in conditions that were the biggest I had ever experienced (double to triple overhead). On the skills vs risk chart the author mentions I was low-mid skilled in a higher risk environment. I grabbed the first wave of a large set that rolled through and ended up wiping out. Somehow in the washing machine my leash lasso’d around my legs making them virtually worthless in my struggle. Imagine swimming without legs…it doesn’t work at all. The set waves behind mine were crashing over me and keeping me under. This particular storm was angled perfectly for my break and was very strong at a relatively close distance meaning set waves came in groups of up to 10 as opposed to the normal 2-3. I don’t know how long I was under. My struggle was intense. I feel like the entire time I was thinking clearly but only bc I didn’t have time to panic, maybe? Like the author I thought about my family. I remember being close to the surface once and then getting pounded again. Then an extreme calm came over my body. My vision went black and I remember thinking “this is it, it’s time”. Next thing I remember I surfaced… maybe it was right after I thought it was over, maybe I passed out for some time? Like the author I pretended to just shake it off like no big deal. I told the story like a badge of pride, showing fearlessness and strength or whatever. Never once did I say I was stupid for being out there in the first place. But I was almost that idiot that died after saying “hey y’all watch this”. I do hope my eventual death feels like the calm that came over me here though. I’ll never forget how peaceful that felt…
futevolei··on The rise of batteries in six charts
For real. I’m trying to diy a battery now with 304ah lifepo4 cells and it works out to 125wh/kg. Doesn’t seem like even 300wh/kg will trickle down to the public anytime soon.
futevolei··on Breakdown of faults by car brand: Tesla has replaced Dacia at the bottom
I’m sorry for that painful price drop you experienced but that is on you for paying 70k, a price that literally and explicitly was jacked up for the purpose of decreasing demand in order to resolve the order backlog at the time. Don’t forget all other car makers were doing the exact same thing at the time so this isn’t a Tesla specific issue though Tesla was probably the most extreme.
futevolei··on ‘Less than half’ fresh produce sold globally makes any profit
Walnuts are where it’s at (but agreed pine nuts are clearly the winner). Homemade pesto with homegrown basil was a revelation in our house. Better than any store bought and a fraction of the price.
futevolei··on Ignoring boys' emotional needs fuels public health risks
I’m 45 and only realized this a few years ago and I think about when my dad was 45 and it’s obvious he had no clue. He was all work, work, work, don’t complain, no crying, no weakness. I know he tried his best but man what a screw up…I’m thankful for my wife and friends who put up with my complete and total lack of maturity for so long. Like wow, what a heavy lift I threw at them and still do because I’m still not caught up and not sure I ever will be?
futevolei··on The Accidental HFT Firm (2018)
For real, especially considering since I contributed to the kickstarter or whatever. I’ve dm’d him once or twice over the years on Twitter asking about it and no response.
futevolei··on Tesla Virtual Power Plant
Did you ask about the bill in winter before signing the lease? It’s a standard question before signing a lease in Chicago. Are you otherwise ‘getting a deal’ on rent and now you know why it was a deal?
