fusslo··on Fixing the Portobello Police Station Clock
I would GUESS that someone tried figuring it out in 2023 and replaced the battery as troubleshooting. If it were me, I'd probably do the same then stop when I hit a wall so I didn't damage it further. I don't wanna be the guy who damages a 100+ year old public clock

I could just hear the clockmaker James Martin calling me a butcher in his disapproving manner

fusslo··on The darker side of being a doctor
I'd love to vote for loan forgiveness for anyone who successfully qualifies and practices as a doctor

We have the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program where qualifying public servants pay 10 years of their loans and the rest is forgiven tax free.

Removing financial stress from doctors seems like a public good most people could get behind

fusslo··on I think I hate the internet
I get a LOT of untagged NSFW and political posts in my For You. I'm guessing it's influenced by the likes of people I follow. I don't know WHO to unfollow... and I don't really want to unfollow anyone.

I kinda wish I could influence my For You with rules:

> No more than 2 degrees of separation from me

> Posts with fewer than 150 likes

fusslo··on Burnt out on a three-day week
I think you're probably right

Right now I have a mental block with reading ai written or ai enchanced text. So unless the article has a pre-2021 date... I'll ask ai to summarize it

I think I'll eventually have to get over that bias

fusslo··on Audacity 4.0
thanks

I think this may be the first time I've wanted to buy merch

fusslo··on What we want is a hunter gatherer lifestyle with space age tools (2022)
isnt it a major part of a star trek movie too?

The one with the purple space bazooka

fusslo··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
Back when I first started my career, I generally disagreed. My first job was at a connected device startup in the IoT space. The whole ethos around data was pretty good. Maybe it was because the tech side of the company I worked for was 99% ex-gov contractors (aerospace, low level routers, submarines...).

We collected such minimal information. Basically only enough to allow for OTAs, functionality, and debugging. Thinking back, we could've collected so much more.

I remember when Alexa hit the market and we (as a company) thought there's NO WAY amazon was making any money on them.

Today... NO WAY. Along the way the value stopped being "This product is priced so we can make a profit" and became "The data we collect is more valuable than the sale".

fusslo··on Show HN: I made a retirement simulator: 125 years of data, 25 countries
huh, yesterday I vibe coded a similar tool. It lets me set my current savings, investment, retirement. Expected yearly savings, expected number of years of work left. After retirement, only withdrawals are allowed (investments, savings still get returns tho)

Codex suggested a bunch of improvements: monte carlo, investment volatility, expense inflation, capital gains tax etc. One thing codex didn't ask about was social security. So that's another factor that could be improved.

I wanted to know 'do I really need to work 30 more years?'

What would be really interesting is discovering an attainable formula where my investments outpace my expenses. Or, what variables let me die with basically $0 in the bank

At the end, I realized I had no idea what the calculator was REALLY doing. So it could be right... it could be really wrong too. Having historical data might help solve those issues

fusslo··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
man what happened to loading bars?

I'm sitting here watching the block bounce in a circle and I have no idea if the game is actually loading or not. Tried turning off PopUpOff. Tried turning off adblock.

as it turns out it just isn't loading (firefox on win 11, if that matters)

fusslo··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
I also disagree with OP.

It seems like (to my very uneducated mind) the founders were worried about the tyranny of government. We have the bill of rights and a constitution designed to limit government powers.

But then there are people who weaponize rights against the people in favor of the government.

A private company creating a mass-surveillance network of tracking everyone in public is absolutely a weaponization of rights. Rights designed to keep our government accountable. Our rights that give us tools to prevent government from weaponizing privacy against us (secret juries, secret trials, secret government employees, records etc citing 'privacy' as a reason for secrecy).

fusslo··on An American Mosaic (interactive map of ancestry census data)
out of curiosity I overlaid this map with the zillow map of my city. It seems to be a good predictor for number of homes for sale

I suppose that shouldn't be surprising, but it was to me

fusslo··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
> right to privacy is wrong

Even this isn't true (unless you meant morally, which I can't agree with) in the USA. There are times and situations where you absolutely have a right to privacy in public. For example, the government still needs a warrant to listen to you on a phone call in a public phone booth. The government needs a warrant to attach a gps tracker to your car even if it's on the public streets.

Personally, I would love extending protections against private corporations (not just government), and prevent the storage and aggregation of surveillance sensor data.

fusslo··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
> Flock can make all the promises it wants

They lost me when the CEO lied to a city official in a public meeting. ( https://www.aclu.org/news/privacy-technology/tracking-alpr-c... )

fusslo··on Delta
My experience with Zed was installing it and giving up after spending 15 minutes or so making the settings sane

It's probably just because I'm old

fusslo··on Kinney Drugs pulls back AI phone assistant after hundreds of customer complaints
I recently had an AI chatbot lie to me. SiriusXM's ai bot INSISTED that the weather notifications were NOT a siriusxm feature. But, I had called ~4 months previously and the human confirmed it WAS a feature and she very kindly turned it off

Just as you said, I spent 20 minutes YELLING at the AI before it would transfer me to a human. Oh, and the entire time it was spewing ads for their programming. When I got to the human she, once again, confirmed it WAS a feature and it re-activated during 'free weekends'.

My father had cancer. After he was diagnosed he retired. His full time job became managing his health: medicare, state benefits, doctors appointments, medications, talking with billing people. He was on firstname basis with multiple providers. He invited some nurses and their families to the first 4th of july when he was cancer-free (they politely declined to keep the relationship professional).

I just imagine my father, or my 75yr old mother (whose health is beginning to decline) trying to navigate this new AI world. It must be an absolute nightmare. I can imagine how frustrated and disempowered they'd feel after a lifetime of reasoning with other humans.

fusslo··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I think maybe I in-artfully wrote it - I mean: there are situations when wearing smart glasses should be labelled 'pervert glasses'. Not that there are situations that require wearing of the glasses
fusslo··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I think I agree with this sentiment most. I am having trouble articulating it. I think wearing smart glasses in some situations is on a scale between rude, offensive, and wrong. I think that's what culture teaches us about what is and what isn't acceptable behavior, right? Like some places teach us it's rude to speak over each-other. Here in New England it is rude not to.

I am 100% on board with calling smart glasses "Pervert glasses" if worn in situations that call for it

fusslo··on Everything you do is being recorded
so I've been watching the CMS symposium about "Burden Reduction". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYyK0Hc43UE&list=PLaV7m2-zFK...

Most of the videos talk about reducing burden on clinicians. Specifically: sharing, accessing, updating patient history. Providing clinicians and patients guidance through the medical process through AI agents (that have access to your PII). the kaiser permanente guy highlighted ai's use in guiding billing codes. Dr. Oz spoke about getting pre-authorizations near instantaneously

I'm not sure how that gets accomplished without reducing liability or loosing restrictions. I wouldnt be surprised to see a continued attack on our healthcare privacy

fusslo··on Cops Used Flock to Track a Man Across State Lines for a Pretextual Weed Search
Ok, the article is confusing but the complaint is a little better.

> The vehicle was registered to Edward 12-01-1993. Edward had an active Brown County felony warrant with nationwide extradition.

so he wasn't just wanted but also had an active warrant.

> Multiple Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle at that time

Police tried arresting him before, but couldn't find him. The police then used flock to find a pattern of coming/going over the state line. I'm guessing they stationed someone nearby to wait for a flock alert and arrest him.

The following is total speculation on my part: The police are including the "Based on prior flock hits, the vehicle travels to Michigan frequently which is a known source State for Marijuana as it is legal there." to build probable cause for searching the car and finding the marijuana.

Otherwise the only PC is: "He declined consent to search his vehicle. However, DeputyKowalski informed him he would be conducting a search of his vehicle due to the odor of marijuana".

Maybe the olfactory skills of officers are so dubious that courts need more facts than just an odor? That'd be my guess.

fusslo··on Civilian plane crash in New Mexico tied to military GPS blocking
> At 0000:26, the ARTCC controller advised the flight crew that the airplane was at 13,000 ft msl, 1,000 ft above their assigned altitude. The pilot responded that they were correcting their altitude and that the airplane had lost GPS capability. The pilot stated they would need a heading

> About 0005 the ARTCC operations supervisor contacted [the military] to stop jamming and at 0007:34 ADS-B data recording returned to 2-3 second intervals.

> The flight crew again reported they “[have] a visual on Ruidoso” at 0008:30 and that they could “go visual.”

> About 0010, the ARTCC operations supervisor informed [the military] that the airplane was on a visual approach and that they could resume jamming.

> The airplane impacted terrain about 250 ft southwest of the last recorded data point at an elevation of about 9,950 ft, and about 730 ft east and 230 ft below the Capitan Mountains Summit Radio Facility, located at an elevation of about 10,180 ft.

The image of the map from the report really helps me understand the path. It seems like the aircraft began visual approach and didn't know where it was, or didn't know about the mountain.

fusslo··on Don't be a meat proxy
I've been thinking about these kind of interactions a lot lately. I don't know what it says about human communication patterns but I'm not super excited about it.

I've been guilty of acting as a middleman for review comments from difficult coworkers. I farm out my interaction to avoid the confrontation, mental exhaustion, and to avoid negative feelings I got from those reviews. I don't mean 'my work is being challenged', I mean people who: delay, nitpick, blow up architecture after not participating in design, assert false info as truth and require you prove them wrong, require 10x evidence of everyone else. Not people who are like 'Hey, I don't understand this code can you add some comments or lets hop in a room for review'

I've also been on the receiving end. I like to think I'm NOT one of these toxic reviewers.

Now, we have Business Owners and Managers who are now even further away from engineers. Important meetings have 0 engineers in them ( a couple people who think they're engineers because they were for 5 years in the 80s ). Output is an AI generated transcript that gets copy/pasted into copilot to generate jira tasks by the Product Owner.

It seems like we (humans) really don't like working with other people. Or, maybe we like working with people who can advance our careers and want to automate interaction with people who cant?

I think this effort by Business Owners to set up an AI wall may be the closest I've seen to 'digital classism' (maybe there is a better term for it?).

fusslo··on Over 150k Flights: Airlines Just Flew the Busiest Day in Recorded History
I recently read Days of Rage about the various groups committing political violence during the 60s and 70s. Weatherman, Black Panthers, Black Liberation Army, etc.

I don't know if there was really a 'message' more than just reporting what 'happened'. But, I have to say I came away with the idea that that kind of political violence is futile. Non-violent political action seemed to have MUCH more beneficial action than any bomb. (of course it wasn't as clear-cut between non-violent groups and revolutionary groups at the time)

Maybe thats only because I just read the ONE book.

fusslo··on VLC for Unity now supported on Linux

fusslo··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
nope! wocmud, worlds of carnage. `telnet wocmud.org 4000` or https://www.wocmud.org/welcome.php

I think wocmud is one of the smaller muds out there but for whatever reason my brother and I were obsessed!

I learned about Wheel of Time much later in life so I missed out on WoTMUD

fusslo··on The case for MUDs in modern times (2018)
Between this and the previous MUD post about LLM MUDs I'd love to see a comeback.

A few months ago I tried out my old (1999-2004) hang, wocmud.org

Some of the quests were still sometimes broken. auto attacking mobs were still unfairly strong. But, there were a couple people more than willing to help me get my gear back from my corpse. They helped me remember the areas, quests, syntax, etc that I had BURNED into my memory when I was 14. We chatted and got caught up in the 20 years of updates. Oh, and I didn't get banned for being out-of-character. overall a 10/10 nostalgic experience

I started working on my own with Evennia and claude. I was hoping to hook up an LLM for MOBs but had to put it down when life got busy again.

fusslo··on Why do you suck at juggling now?
Your boss needs paperwork to justify pay raises, promotions, etc to their boss & HR. Isn't the whole purpose of that question to leave a paper trail that both you and they can point to?

That's what I've been told, and such I always answer those questions in a way that has a concrete 'goal' that I can point to and either makes ME more valuable to the company OR delivered some thing that is valuable TO the company.

fusslo··on Amid nurse shortage, a university rolls out the welcome mat for men

fusslo··on A grumpy screed about AI in software engineering
My org has restructured to gear up for reducing engineers' necessary skills

They've changed our job titles from 'Engineer' to 'Developer'.

Power (in the form of talking to business owners, organizing work, setting engineering direction) has been centralized. We had 6 engineering managers now we have one 'Director'.

I don't think I've solved a real problem in 8 months.

fusslo··on Frank Lloyd Wright’s first home
It kinda seems like Sullivan being shrewd. Sullivan probably saw the value in one of his junior architects going through the whole process of building a house for himself. It'd give Wright valuable experience. Mistakes could happen to his own property rather than a client's. Having such a contract may limit the chances that Wright would leave the employer. Wrights attitude towards Sullivan would be more positive if Wright saw him as a patron.
fusslo··on Decoy Font
Maybe the more interesting thing is how far people are going to 'fight' against AI?

Just the fact that people are putting real thought and effort (even if it doesn't last too long...) is worth considering.

On the human side, I'm kinda losing patience proving I'm human. But, I also really like claude being able to access information.
