> They owe you nothing, so if you want to figure something out, searching the web is your best chance.

Of course that's true, but most OSS devs would prefer broader usage to narrower usage.

funstuff007··on Sign in with Google has been removed for your privacy
true, but that's only the case if you're currently authenticated with Google. Not true after deleting cookies and/or local storage. But more importantly, less savy tech folks might not be aware that they should not have to re-enter credentials if they have recently logged into gmail or other google owned services.
funstuff007··on EU-wide maximum limit of €10K for cash payments
Yes, but if Ireland were not part of the EU there would be no tax arbitrage and Ireland would pick a market determined corp tax rate.
funstuff007··on The Physics of Scuba Diving
Yes, I hear you on that. Unless you can hold your breath for while, it's tough to replicate that immersion. That being said, I do like the increased physical rigor of holding your breath and diving deep. I find I spend too much time on vacation just floating around--SCUBA only adds to that. chacun à son goût

but if you buy canned goods, and finance with negative interest rate debt, that's a winner.
funstuff007··on The Physics of Scuba Diving
I did SCUBA a few times. My negative take is that it's like equipment heavy bird watching. If you're only visiting reefs, and you're a strong swimmer it may be best to stick with snorkeling.

I never got advanced enough to do wreck diving. That stuff looks very cool, but I've become more personal risk averse since parenthood. Don't let this dissuade you. There are plenty of wrecks that are a safe as reefs--and more that are not.

And if you're into nerding out over equipment, then you'll like SCUBA. Traveling with SCUBA gear is a burden similar to traveling with golf clubs.

funstuff007··on SSHGuard
> exist only on a secure element

Do non-technical users know how to operate a secure element? Is that an encrypted home drive on a laptop protected by a weak password?

I appreciate your input, but I still think 2FA is the most secure and usable method for non-technical people. Of course, no SMS (at least outside the US).

funstuff007··on Bye, Twitter
He definitely takes joy in pointing out incongruencies. Troll is an offensive term.
funstuff007··on It Ruined Everything’: Buy Now, Pay Later Drives Gen Z into Debt
Probably a good time to take on more debt. Even though interest rates are higher, the inflation will help you pay any new debt down quite quickly.
funstuff007··on SSHGuard
True, true, true. You cannot rely on the VPN always working.
funstuff007··on SSHGuard
I get keys are better than passwords, but how do you enforce key rotation for non-technical users when they can barely manage to changer their passwords? I much prefer 2FA than keys for non-technical users.

> whose proprietor is an alt-right troll

I like tbray, and I don't like Elon, but that is not a fair characterization. It's right this post has been flagged.

funstuff007··on German privacy watchdogs conclude that Microsoft 365 is incompatible with GDPR
I would argue it's basically impossible to have an internet connected app that does not run afoul of GDPR in one way or another. It's really just a question of how much of GDPR can you comply with at a reasonable cost or a better strategy is to do your best to comply with the spirit of GDPR, if not the letter.
funstuff007··on Ghana plans to buy oil with gold instead of dollars
How does Ghana have access to gold and not have access to USD? Is there some reason why they cannot convert their gold to USD?
funstuff007··on FTX Collapse takes toll on the Bahamas
> But construction never really got under way.

Speaking of work that never got started, did Nikola ever build that factory?

funstuff007··on Congressmembers Tried to Stop the SEC’s Inquiry into FTX
because both parties can agree that the B in BIPOC stands for billionaires.
funstuff007··on Humans.txt
Indeed, we have pages on our site that are north of 95% bot traffic. And they're not junk or honeypot pages. The humans on this page often represent hi value prospects we seek to convert. B2B2C service.

no mention of Time Base Corrector here...?
funstuff007··on Business Insider: Amazon is gutting its voice-assistant Alexa
Indeed. I turned mine off as soon as I saw Alexa transcripts being used in court cases. If one can't conspire to commit crimes in one's own home, where can you?
funstuff007··on Decision Fatigue
probably to undermine carbon taxes.
funstuff007··on The erasure of women from online pregnancy literature
It comes down to cost, and what costs society's are currently and consistently willing to bear. Would ADA laws have so much force if FDR were able bodied?
funstuff007··on IQ is largely a pseudoscientific swindle
Indeed. It's always been hard to write a good title, but in this age of click-back it's hard to avoid writing a bad title.
funstuff007··on “just put Twitter in the cloud” we tried that- $300M monthly
probably the same banks to say no to vendors who cannot provide on-prem solutions. but, but, but it's ok if you're AWS.
funstuff007··on “just put Twitter in the cloud” we tried that- $300M monthly
I guess this makes FTX's $250K a month spend on AWS downright thrifty.
funstuff007··on “just put Twitter in the cloud” we tried that- $300M monthly
Snapchat pays Google cloud $400MM a year. Using these cost metrics, are Twitter's compute needs 9X those of Snapchat? maybe so. seems reasonable to me. And then perhaps, this person is saying that cloud (Google or otherwise) is not the way to go for Snapchat

I'm starting to feel there is little daylight between Colonel Kurtz and SBF.
funstuff007··on I decided to stop working on Mighty
You could say that same about running off-line batch jobs on EC2 instances. Unless your co-located data sources are forcing you to do so, I cannot fathom why you would.

I dig when billionaires are wrong. They're just like us. :)

funstuff007··on FTX balance sheet, revealed
But you never get access to those dollars. You end up owning a scarcer magic bean. And dividends are not equivalent to share buy backs--both from a tax perspective and from a forced diversification perspective.
funstuff007··on FTX balance sheet, revealed
True, if self-denominated debt there is no risk of bankruptcy. There is only risk of hyperinflation. That being said, default and hyperinflation are two sides of the same coin.
