funstuff007··on Amazon S3 now automatically encrypts all new objects
Yes, if AWS has possession of keys and drives and the govt wants the data, I cannot imagine how encryption at rest does anything for you.
funstuff007··on Amazon S3 now automatically encrypts all new objects
What does encryption at rest protect against with a Cloud provider?

I assume the read credentials must ipso facto decrypt the object. So encryption at rest protects you against an inside job at AWS (smash and grab drives) or government confiscation. Am I thinking about this correctly?

funstuff007··on The Moratorium on US Medical School Enrollment from 1980 to 2005 (2008)
maybe so. 30 years ago I don't think Northeastern would have been considered elite tier. But based on its current acceptance rates, it's getting pretty close.

Isn't it usually a bad idea to have the database and application server in different data centers? It is / was my understanding that both the database and application server should ideally be on the same rack.

> In retrospect, we should have recognized that as the US population increases the number of US medical graduates should increase.

I suspect the same problem exists among elite-tier university enrollment sizes.

The conclusion of the data you provided is in agreement with my statement.
funstuff007··on Cannabis is legal in most US states but federal laws block businesses from banks
The Feds should never fear interfering with state laws when federal law is in direct opposition. It's the basis of the entire system.
funstuff007··on Cannabis is legal in most US states but federal laws block businesses from banks
Didn't we fight the bloodiest war in the history of this country based on which laws (State or Federal) had primacy? And it's still not settled due to Obama's weed policies.
funstuff007··on Managing tape drives and libraries with the Unix/Linux CLI
LTO does seem to be the last bastion of closed source vendor lock-in. That being said, even if prices dropped by 75%, I'm not sure our shop would look to do LTO instead of a series of hard drives. 20 TB hard drives are now $400.

funstuff007··on Palantir’s SPAC bets backfire
a lot of shops do this. The most obvious example of this practice are car financing companies such as Ford Motor Credit and its ilk. I am not aware of how abusive (i.e. terrible underwriting standards) Lucent was using for this technique.

The issue with the Palantir strategy is that the borrowers weren't actually borrowers, they sold often-times worthless equity to Palantir. And now Palantir cannot get its money back. Quite frankly, I don't know how Palantir investors were OK with the Palantir balance sheet getting loaded up with highly speculative investments. Growth at any cost, I guess.

funstuff007··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
My presumption is Binance is the buyer of last resort for $BNB.
funstuff007··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
Yes, my poetic license path is very heavy withdrawals -> bank run -> dire straits (money for nothing pun).

$60B in assets, $8B in withdrawals. Even if all the assets are correctly valued, I don't anyone would envy their position. But given their own coin in holding in there, maybe they are devoting some money to defend it, or maybe they are actually in decent shape and can handle this quasi bank run.

More succinctly, if they were really toast, then $BNB would be cratering. Given it's holding in there, it seems they are OK (at this very instant in time).

funstuff007··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
If they're in such dire straights, how is it $BNB is hanging there? Is Binance defending their own magic bean? What is the cost of doing so?

funstuff007··on Graph showing level of Covid, flu and RSV in US wastewater systems, by city
Furness seems to have only a cursory understand of immunity (despite all his credentials). Boosters and yearly flu shots just some simple examples of how the immunological world does not work the way he describes. Too many public health officials are unwilling to admit they made mistakes and gave bad recommendations early in the pandemic. He should correct his errors or step down.

grew up in 70s, felt the same way. But when I purchase these cars for my son, I felt that best Hot Wheels were way better than Matchbox. That being said, Hot Wheels does make some kooky models that I would stay 100 miles away from just on aesthetic grounds.

There is no evidence of "immunity debt", and waning immunity are one and the same. So if think one is myth, you believe both are myths.
