"The program assists students in increasing their awareness of issues encountered by minority students in a predominantly white institution through conversations with current graduate students of color and with one another"

What happened to just fucking studying and treating people based on individual merits, not skin color? God American universities are lost

funkythingss··on Propaganda on Tumblr
I can't take anything seriously from a person, who says

> "Now, don’t get me wrong here: I am one hundred percent aware that history regularly erases the contributions of women, and especially women of colour"

funkythingss··on Please – A Cross-Language Build System
this looks very interesting! Has anyone used it before?
funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Is a Flawed Messenger with a Crucial Message for Tech
oh yeah, the Gawker thing was pretty awesome actually. Gawker got what he deserved
funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Is a Flawed Messenger with a Crucial Message for Tech
And I guess the medias head exploded when everyone clapped at the RNC when he said "I'm proud to be gay, a republican and an American". Didn't you know republicans hate everything that moves, especially gays, womyn and African Americans?
funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Is a Flawed Messenger with a Crucial Message for Tech
I don't understand the medias obsession with Thiel since Trumps election.

He's a republican. K

He's gay. K

He's critical of the Silicon Valley echo chamber. K

He's a great businessman. K

There's not really a great boogieman story to make from. this.

funkythingss··on The More Gender Equality, the Fewer Women in STEM
so in STEM it's only sexism and not the fact that there are less women/ less women with interest?

Where's sexism in medicine, sociology, biology?

funkythingss··on The More Gender Equality, the Fewer Women in STEM
This phenomenon isn't entirely new. Some man have seen it as "Scandinavian gender paradox".

Still, why are we surprised? We know instinctively, that there will never web 50/50 in some fields, because man/women just don't like it as much. It's sad that some people have to pretend to agree with the feminist narrative

funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Parts Ways with Silicon Valley
what do you want then? Everyone is supposed to have the same opinion?
funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Parts Ways with Silicon Valley
:D

These diversity preachers are just a bunch pathetic weasels who haven't learned to work with/accept people with differing opinions

funkythingss··on Peter Thiel Parts Ways with Silicon Valley
How can you advocate for someone leaving Silicon Valley based on his "philosophical jibberish", and at the same time promote diversity? "Diversity" increasingly means nothing. SV is one hell of a political echo chamber.

Diversity of thought, REGARDLESS of age, sex, skin color etc should be the goal, not ideological purity.

funkythingss··on Alexa for Business
wow. That's not easy stuff
funkythingss··on Alexa for Business
Putting the privacy aspect aside, this is gonna be hilarious with people "abusing" Alexa for jokes etc. As far as I now, Alexa can't be restricted to the voice of a single/some people.
funkythingss··on Asking members to support journalism, The Guardian raises more revenue than ads
It's funny that you mention parody. I recently came across this guy, who says he can't parody feminism anymore, because they've gone completely mad https://medusamagazine.com/i-created-medusa-magazine-and-i-a... :D
funkythingss··on Asking members to support journalism, The Guardian raises more revenue than ads
I can't say that's a surprising headline for them anymore
funkythingss··on Asking members to support journalism, The Guardian raises more revenue than ads
have you seen Flattr? Sounds like exactly that
funkythingss··on Asking members to support journalism, The Guardian raises more revenue than ads
I agree. Ever since Snowden they have been going to absolute horse shit.

examples: https://somuchguardian.tumblr.com

most recent example: basically calling Taylor swift a white supremacist for being silent on politics https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/nov/24/the-gu...

I can't take them seriously anymore, their editorial board has gone mad

funkythingss··on What we do instead of technical interviews
well, I wish I could be that direct sometimes :D
funkythingss··on What we do instead of technical interviews
Multiple problems with your argumentation:

1. women and minorities are underrepresented. True. That does not imply there is sexism. In reality, women have a 2:1 chance over men to get hired, just because everyone is desperate to hire women. Be it to improve the image, whatever. Source http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2015/04/women-preferred-21-o...

2. Norway (correct me if I'm wrong on the country) experimented with genderless and faceless applications. The result: Men were actually favoured over women in STEM. How can we explain that? It's certainly not sexism.

At the end of the day, it comes down to this: it is very controversial to say men and women chose differently, but they do. And there's nothing wrong with that! Isn't that what early feminists fought for? Were is the "sexism" in plumbing, oil rigs, and other less desirable jobs? There are virtually only men on those jobs. Tells you what these "diversity" people really are: jealous.

EDIT: Grammar

funkythingss··on What we do instead of technical interviews
"Tons of great people, and, disproportionately, women and minorities, can perform less well at technical interviews but be great in role."

You lost all your credibility with one sentence. Congratulations.

funkythingss··on Google’s fired engineer: James Damore’s claim against search giant revealed
I don't care if he was right or wrong, or objective. And I don't claim to have sufficient knowledge about the topic to disprove/approve his points. I care about the right to discuss things without the fear of being smeared. Discussions are essential for us to iron out or positions, learn something new or change our mind. If you simply ignore one side of the issue, people will retract into their bubble, which is the exact opposite of what we need right now.

If he's wrong, you have every right to discuss this issue with him. That's actually what he wanted, if you look towards the end of his memo. Did you read the original? https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/3914586/Googles-I...

funkythingss··on Google’s fired engineer: James Damore’s claim against search giant revealed
I'm honestly not in the position to judge whether his sources were correct or not. If you read the memo and listen to him (e.g. on the Rubin Report) however you realise he doesn't want to hurt anybody, not even close. He is an extremely intelligent, introverted guy.

But I don't care about it being right or wrong. Google wanted all opinions to be on the table (in theory). Damore is just the latest example of someone (usually a little right wing) to get in trouble for his political opinions. I don't want this shit to come to Europe, I want to be able to have political discussions with my colleagues.

Speaking up for anyone who is unjustly attacked, no matter what political affiliation, is all we can do. I firmly believe Silicon Valley will eat itself. Silicon Valley is so big, because it cared about results, not diversity. Shifting their attention to diversity will increasingly bug investors and/or hurt profits so bad, that the next big tech hub will arise.

funkythingss··on Google’s fired engineer: James Damore’s claim against search giant revealed
These cowards don't link to the original: https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/3914586/Googles-I...

Instead, they link to the heavily edited Gizmodo hit piece, that has the sources removed. Dishonest

funkythingss··on Google’s fired engineer: James Damore’s claim against search giant revealed
Me, too. Just so ironic how the responses of Silicon Valley/Media proved his point exactly.
