fungi··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
2nd vote for postmarket. have put it on an old tablet i pulled out of ewaste and it is excellent.

there is clearly no future for android for anyone wanting an open and spyware free platform. its time to invest out efforts elsewhere.

And don't get me started on Sesame!
fungi··on M 7.4 earthquake – 100 km ENE of Miyako, Japan
was reading in a park in suburban tokyo a few years ago, notifications arrived for the noto peninsula earthquake.

kids in the park stared doing wobbly knee dance :D

felt the quake about 30sec later.

fungi··on US plans online portal to bypass content bans in Europe and elsewhere
Banning Nazi and ISIS propaganda doesn't and hasn't negativity affected anyone but Nazis and Jihadists. It's just plain good policy.

I guess that's why arguments against it always fall back on straw men and hypothetical slippery slopes.

There are plenty of actual things that do negatively affect societies free speech but this isn't even close to one of them.

fungi··on America’s semiconductor boom [video]
everyone pays the premium now not just the USA.

this would represent an additional cost on top of that that only USA consumers pays.

fungi··on America’s semiconductor boom [video]
how competitive will american made cpu's be? will american consumers just end up paying n * more for same product that the rest of the world gets from taiwan?

Australia's growth in housing supply has outpaced population for over a decade.

https://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2023/dec/12/austra...

Yes population is important, no it's not the crux of the matter.

> And the government - mostly landlord owning multi house portfolios - have zero interest in fixing it.

That 100% is. Would add that news corp is largely a portal to realestate and nine/fairfax is to domain.

fungi··on Job boards are still rife with 'ghost jobs'. What's the point?

it's pretty impossible to take anything the media, lib/alp or industry say seriously when they got us where we are and are proposing more or of the same.

more fossil fuels are incompatible with 1.5c target

https://www.carbonbrief.org/new-fossil-fuels-incompatible-wi...

at this point they simply must stay in the ground

fungi··on Cheap, sustainable hydrogen through solar power
hydrogen worsens the impact of methane in the atmosphere and as such simply pumping hydrogen through existing infrastructure sounds pretty dangerous.

https://theconversation.com/dont-rush-into-a-hydrogen-econom...

https://agage.mit.edu/publications/global-environmental-impa...

more skeptically, given that green hydrogen remains a pipe dream, it's both a useful delaying tactic for switching to electricity and furthering investment in fossil fuels, which must stay in the ground if we are to have any hope of staying below 1.5c.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/new-fossil-fuels-incompatible-wi...

fungi··on Proxy Chrome extensions are not going to be usable in MV3
no bc they are leveraging monopoly in search to advantage their other products and undermine competition.

im a relatively happy firefox user, but at this point to say mozilla significantly mitigates googles monopoly is as plausible as when microsoft claimed that BeOS somehow mitigated theirs.

fungi··on ‘Solar tower’ system produces jet fuel from CO2, water, and sunlight
also papering over the need to invent cost competitive green hydrogen production and massively scale it really fast.

also hydrogen is a leaky greenhouse gas https://energypost.eu/hydrogen-is-also-a-greenhouse-gas-so-l...

wish them luck, not trying to be negative, we need solutions asap, situation is dire.

fungi··on Apple Unveils M2
1000nits is great, but 1920x1080 is underwhelming. most of the thinkpad range is advertised as available with higher res (but other then the x1 carbon seems unavailable).

> 2 SODIMM, so 64 GB RAM

sweet :D

this looks more interesting https://wccftech.com/hp-unleashes-zhan-x-a-14-inch-laptop-up...

fungi··on Apple Unveils M2
meh monitor

previous gen cpu

only 16gig

pretty underwhelming to be honest

fungi··on Apple Unveils M2
honestly happy to pay through the nose for thinkpad build quality. it's a tax deduction and going to last me 5+ years.

hopefully get some ryzen 6000 series laptop options this year. the thinkpad z13 looks promising, but will have to wait for reviews to start rolling in.

fungi··on OpenStreetMap proven to be a highly accurate map in top US cities
https://hub.docker.com/r/maptiler/tileserver-gl

hosing the entire planet is not sensible, but you can safely host a region/city/small country.

that said im not in love with maptiler and trying out a bunch of other tile servers with limited sucess.
