fungi··on Chinese Tech Firms Forced to Choose Market: Home or Everywhere Else
getting a license is not hard or hostile.

the fact that you have to do _anything_ is a problem... also dealing with mainland providers can be challenging.

fungi··on Samsung Acquires Joyent
> finally broke down and installed FB messenger again,

Prob not great for more advanced messenger functionality but Face Slim (https://github.com/indywidualny/FaceSlim) does notifications and simple/group chats fairly well.

fungi··on I've Just Liberated My Modules
couple of days ago i was all smug from upvotes for calling npm best practise.

i take that back, npm is a security risk that should be avoided.

now i need a new package manager.

fungi··on Grd – A CSS grid framework using Flexbox in 512 bytes gzipped
you don't _need_ to, its simply best practice.

have you ever taken on a code base with thousands of lines of copy pasta code?

tried to update or workout dependencies/conflicts when the dude before you just dumped a bunch of jquery plugins (some hacked) in a directory?

give me a package.json any day! mmmm.. structured data.. nom nom nom

fungi··on Last Men Standing: the luck to survive AIDS, and the misfortune to live on
My old man is in his late 60s, has been HIV positive since < 1989, his partner passed away however he is going strong, with a happy family, great house and just started his own biz. Basically a really lucky guy living with a very unfortunate disease. /anecdote

fungi··on Gmail Will Warn If Message Is Not Authenticated/Encrypted
You can tick every box securing your email server and still get rejected or flagged as spam.
fungi··on China Cracks Down on Politically Incorrect Maps

fungi··on Koel: A personal music streaming server
Tried hacking on a mobile skin last week and gave up. Cherry music is very minimal but works on mobile.
fungi··on Drupal 8.0.0 released
it's moving further up the chain. it is not hard to find a graphic designer who fancy themselves as wp experts because they can copy pasta css, install a module or two and ftp it to $3/mo shared hosting.

but honestly that is what many clients want, make it look pretty and don't bore me with your "best practice" and "you need to apply 12months worth of critical security patch's" mumbo jumbo.

fungi··on Atlassian files for IPO
Do you know a free way to transfer cash from aus bank to nz bank?

I want to buy from www.lastseason.co.nz without getting stung.

fungi··on Near-record strength El Niño still on track to bring a wet California winter
Does El Nino have an affect Europe?

Maybe a good time to buy wheat futures? Australia's east coast wheat crop is going to have a rough year or three.

fungi··on OpenStreetMap is the Most Important thing in Geo
Used osmand from f-droid in Indonesia few weeks ago. Google maps was basically useless. OSM map in southern Lombok did send me down a crazy dirt path that was mapped as main road. That was fine for me, I was just exploring the country on a scooter not relying on it for anything important (uploaded fixes when I got back to the home stay).

Similarly experience in Philippines in January, Google maps had basically nothing in Palawan but OSM had great coverage.

fungi··on Canada's Economic Slide in Five Charts
No boom, minerals, housing prices, or tulips is ever going to last. Which is why a broad based economy is important. The government of the day is responsible for this.

But I am not an economist.

fungi··on Confessions of a Grown-Up Kick-Scooter Rider
Shame? really, people feel shame for using a scooter?

Scooters are pretty common is Sydney, nobody you care about would bat an eyelid. My friend riders hers around Singapore and nobody other then the occasionally overzealous security guard cares.

Really is says more about the city/society you live in if you are looked down upon for something as simple as a scooter.

fungi··on Australian Platypus Conservancy
I doubt any thing I have built in the last 5 years will stand the test of time as well as the FrontPage code that I have spent the last 10+ years scoffing at.
fungi··on Garbage Collection, Without the Noise or the Smell
could have been another article about japan. people rinse before bagging and their in noticeably less smell.

what would be nice is a user pays system for garbage recycling in order to create an incentive to reuse containers and reduce over packaging (unfortunately this would inevitability create a problem of more illegal dumping)

fungi··on How Walking in Nature Changes the Brain
I just got back from a walk in Nature for my lunch brake.

A Kookaburra stole my sandwich and now i'm stressed as fuck and angry at the world.

fungi··on Greece
there are three pre-crisis article in the first paragraph that are cited as evidence that it was no secret. creditors were (apparently) not blind to the fact.
fungi··on Design is losing its seat at the table
In all my time building websites the over emphasis on design has had a negative impact on the majority of projects i have encountered.

Non-design stake holders will obsess over design to the detriment of other less interesting issues, vendors are selected on the quality of mock up not their ability to deliver or technical expertise. Designer will go for gold and disregard best practice, what the user/product actually needs and what can be delivered on time and budget.

But I (like most people) do not work for apple/dropbox/megacorp... so my anecdotes are not exactly relevant to the article.

fungi··on Ask HN: Internships in Australia?

fungi··on Paris’ $160M Plan to Boost Cycling
Sounds like a utopian dream compared to here in Sydney where the roads minister is ripping up our miniscule cycle network and replacing it with "part time" cycle ways and loading bays.
fungi··on The Rat Tribe of Beijing
It's been posted a million times before, but if you missed it Hong Kong's walled city was amazing:
