Long story short, there is a huge shortage of competent digital folks in the marketing world. I really like the work and the pay is similar.
The two big mobile app stores have been flooded with spam reviews for over 5 years now unchecked. For those that know how to spot fake reviews, it's easy to tell which apps are not legit. For most consumers though, they just believe what they see.
The Nike.com software group was over 1,000 employees working on a microservices mess that performed horribly on the customer side. They could have built a much better product with about 50 competent software professionals.

"Firstly, it’s not change for the sake of change."
Unfortunately, due to the nature of company politics, this kind of thing usually happens because a new CMO or other exec comes in and needs to "mark their territory". Marketing in tech right now is having a big problem with people rising to the leadership ranks that really don't understand the basic fundamentals of the craft.
Long story short, when engineering teams move to serverless, they get huge scalability benefits and essentially "squashing their stack" making team engineering velocity way faster than when they were using EC2/Kubernetes/VMs.
Imagine 10 years ago, being a LAMP stack developer. One day, you find a hosting platform lat allows you to be a much more fast/effective LAMP developer while only needing to work with M+P. This is the core benefit of serverless.
Yes, there are servers under the hood somewhere at an AWS datacenter. Yes, infrastructure still gets patched, updated, etc. Serverless is all about letting engineering team focus on building the application and making the infrastructure "not my problem".
