fuelfive··on Architectural cross-section of Kowloon Walled City
Thanks for writing Glider! I adored that game as a kid and was part of how the possibilities of computing began to captivate my attention.
fuelfive··on Do Not Build SaaS
Back when Elon started PayPal, SaaS was the frontier!

Glad to see our universities making progress in this important area of national security.
fuelfive··on SF Fire Dept.: Person Dies After Cruise Robotaxi Blocked Ambulance
By this logic, the title would be equally correct if they wrote "Jimmy Buffet Dies After Cruise Robotaxi Blocked Ambulance"
fuelfive··on Silicon Valley’s Exclusive Salary Database
It seems weird that Wired focuses on the negative edge case here. At Vicarious we use OptionImpact to make sure everyone is paid fairly, and I imagine that's the vast majority of users. Deceiving someone into taking a lowball salary is a very shortsighted way to run a business, and I have trouble believing any well-run company actually does this.
fuelfive··on RCN is much more data efficient than traditional Deep Neural Networks
We talked about releasing more comprehensive proof of concept code, but ultimately decided against it. While helpful for other researchers, offering anyone on the internet a ready-to-use arbitrary captcha breaker seemed like a net-negative for society.
fuelfive··on Vicarious AI raises another $50M
There are a few papers up on the site already and some more coming. As a business, publications aren't really the KPIs we prioritize (vs an academic-style lab like DM or OAI).

fuelfive··on Large Scale Deep Learning – Jeff Dean [pdf]
These are great highlights, although your second point from [1] is a bit misleading. Humans have a 5% error rate because the average person can't differentiate between 150 different breeds of dogs and other similar nonsense.

This is a very long video. What was nice in it? Can you give some highlights?
fuelfive··on Google's Street View computer vision can beat reCAPTCHA with 99% accuracy
Digging in to the journal article, the technique they use can only scale to captchas with 8 characters or less, so having a longer word is a simple fix.
fuelfive··on Ask HN: Where are the hard programming challenges/jobs?
We work on hard stuff (http://vicarious.com/) and we're always looking for exceptional people

Ha, nice demo presentation.

One minor piece of feedback: add slide number out of total below the slide.

fuelfive··on Scientists See Promise in Deep-Learning Programs
We think so (http://vicarious.com/), but we are obviously biased.
fuelfive··on Vicarious Raises $15M to Build Software That ‘Learns Like A Human’
IIRC, the reasons were:

- Depending on how you read it, Last Invention can sound really ominous.

- LI is a bit of a mouthful to say, whereas Vicarious is a single word

- People generally responded better to Vicarious as a name when we asked around

Never heard of The Last One...

fuelfive··on Vicarious Raises $15M to Build Software That ‘Learns Like A Human’
We seriously considered Last Invention as an alternative name, and actually still own lastinvention.com. For a bunch of reasons, we decided on Vicarious instead. :)
fuelfive··on Hacking and defeating Google's reCAPTCHA with a 99% accuracy
Unfortunately, this attack does nothing to advance the state of the art in OCR (or audio recognition). It's basically the same story as every other CAPTCHA attack to date: take advantage of some accidental statistical regularity in the generation function. As soon as this kind of flaw is discovered, it only takes a few hours for the generation code to be patched in such a way that completely prevents this sort of attack from working.

fuelfive··on What Happened to the Future?
I've worked extensively with the FF guys as an entrepreneur, and from what I've seen they really live these values.

The consumer internet startups FF funded were often intended to become something more than they turned into. Slide was supposed to be about cross-site predictive analytics on a massive scale. Silly widgets were just the data capture vector. Frogmetrics (my FF-funded YC startup) had similar ambitions for the real world. Both companies fell way short of our secret ambitions, but not for lack of effort.

Also, many of FF's most interesting investments aren't on the site for secrecy reasons.

One more anecdote:

Last year, when I told some VC friends that I was working on strong AI as a startup, they laughed. When I told Luke and Brian at Founders Fund, they said they wanted to invest. It's obviously too early to say whether we'll meet the same fate as past AI companies, but we're off to a good start (http://vicariousinc.com/), and that's thanks to Founders Fund taking the kinds of risks they discuss in the article.

My first major project was also a videogame. I made it almost ten years ago, and I still get fanmail about it once a month. I think creative people will create.
