frost_knight··on The problems SparkFun has letting people bring dogs into work
I'm involved in rabbit rescue and have 7 at home. Once in a while if I'm taking them to the vet I'll bring them to work with me in carriers. Coworkers come from all around to fuss over them, and the rabbits love it. They're closely supervised and used to being handled.

One day during an important meeting the CIO picked Earl out of his carrier, a tiny 2-pound grey netherland dwarf who knows he's cute and rides it for all it's worth. She spent the whole meeting with him in her lap -- Earl probably thought we were all there for him.

Her name is Star Simpson.

Having just worked as a system administrator for a college for the past 5 years, I completely agree with gahahaha. I'd say less than 5% of the student body had any computer skill beyond "turn it on and fire up a web browser".

And just in case they hadn't made their point, section 38 from the pastebin is particularly friendly:

"This documentation is NOT distributed under a GPL license."

frost_knight··on Poll: HN desktop Linux users, what distro do you use?
My work environment is currently a chaotic mix of a variety of linux distros, most of them broken in some fashion. I was hired to club the system into submission, and am using CentOS as my base for rebuilding everything.

Work system is Fedora-XFCE, home system is Slackware.

frost_knight··on CyanogenMod domain situation has been resolved
The CyanogenMod team has shown some amazing gentlemanly honor, mixed with a worthy dash of can-do pragmatism, and I hoist a glass o' the pure in their direction.

Instead of disabling it, consider putting it into permissive mode. It logs violations but doesn't enforce any rules. It's a good way to get a feel for what it's doing. You can tweak the rules, view the logs, tweak some more, and work up to a tight policy before enabling.

Also, if you disable it, re-enabling requires that you relabel all of your files and reboot the system; the relabel process can take an impressive amount of time.

Switching between eforcing and permissive can be done on the fly with the setenforce command, no reboot required.

I do think that laziness is a virtue in a sysadmin when properly applied, but using selinux is in your best interest.
