froo··on Doomsday planning for less crazy folk
> What I suspect is that over decades PR firms and major brands have executed a rebranding of the old ways, attempting to recast it as 'paranoia culture' or some form of political radicalism. Their campaign likely involves emphasizing the small paranoid faction of this much larger culture on their TV shows and pop media.

I think that the paranoid culture has evolved relatively organically.

As an avid sailor, I've been looking into breaking one of the long standing records of doing multiple circumnavigations back-to-back and food preservation is one area I've been looking into.

It's been extremely difficult to find content that isn't interspersed with articles on weapons (and other paranoid subjects) found in a lot of content online, when all I am looking for is food storage ideas.

froo··on People Call Me Aaron
> It is very common (especially as you get older) to mix up names for people that are in the same mental category while you are speaking

Exactly this. My mother calls me by my dead brother's name all the time. I'm pretty sure if anyone was aware of his death, she would be (given she was with him at the time).

froo··on People Call Me Aaron
It should be noted that I live in Australia, so our law enforcement system is relatively lax too.

However, my father also died of a heart attack a little over a year beforehand, so I'm sure that was part of it, but I'm sure the jail term was about 90% of what was on his mind at the time.

I only wanted to share just in case Noah ever reads this. Things do eventually get better.

froo··on People Call Me Aaron
My brother committed suicide after facing a prison sentence. It is a really difficult thing that when you meet people (even for years afterwards, it still happens to this day 13 years on) and they just want to talk about the circumstances behind his suicide and the things that get him to that point. Having people consistently drag it up for you really hurts at times.

I also have experienced the name-calling thing. My mother, at times, ends up calling me by my brother's name. I think that is the hardest thing at times, because clearly she's not over it (he shot himself with her in the next room).

I really do feel for Noah. It's not something you ever truly get over (here I am posting about it 13 years on), just something you just got to learn to deal with. I found that for me, I had to find a healthy coping mechanism/hobby to get through those first few years. Life still goes on man.

There are also TV's mounted in 2-way mirrors, so that when you turn off your TV, it's still a functional piece of furniture.
froo··on Apple Watch owners use their nose to navigate the watch
I have personally programmed my toe into my iPhone last year sometime. Purely for testing. It does work.
froo··on Apple Watch owners use their nose to navigate the watch
So the solution to fixing interacting with a smart watch when your hands are otherwise engaged is not to use another conductive piece of your body, but to instead turn a bezel with your hand?

GG thinly veiled ad.

froo··on Developer claims 'PS4 officially jailbroken'
> Your only issue then is graphics card / graphics card drivers.

Some developers are only developing for DirectX only. Even some developers who, have in the past (Blizzard) supported Macs, have forgone this in their latest product (Overwatch) because of the additional hassle in doing so.

froo··on Developer claims 'PS4 officially jailbroken'
It's still a chicken and egg problem. It's not going away any time soon.

Developers are more inclined to develop for PC, because more people use Windows. More people use Windows, because there is a greater number of games in comparison to other platforms.

It sucks, but thats what it is.

froo··on Atlassian's success reminds what a crappy place Australia is for tech business
You're telling me. When we first moved into this apartment building, NBNco hadn't even hooked the building up correctly. It took 5 weeks of constant calling to eventually get an engineer to actually fix it (and in the process, get the entire building connected, it wasn't just us having issues).
froo··on Atlassian's success reminds what a crappy place Australia is for tech business
I've got a 100mbit Fibre connection. I live in an inner city suburb.

It is continually dropping out (I get an average about 1 hour a week of downtime), my upload speed tops out at 35mbit (using iiNet's own tools) and for a lot of things like YouTube, videos can be sketchy, even on the more popular ones.

Australian's really aren't missing out on much if this was supposed to be the standard.

froo··on The McDonalds Monopoly Fraud (2014)
> and getting the patterns/timing correct

As a kid, I was banned from an arcade in my home town for being a bit too good on a certain ticket giving arcade machine (probably around 1995)

The manager was having to reload the machine with tickets too often when I was on it, it actually got to the point where she was standing behind me, watching me win the jackpot probably 2 out of 3 games... after winning several hundred dollars worth of prizes/tickets, I was awarded my tickets and asked not to return.

I actually did my Christmas shopping that year at the prize counter with tickets.

froo··on StarCraft: The past, present and future
Not necessarily. Some people have serious problems multitasking and can't juggle resource management, unit constraints, tech trees and defense/offence simultaneously themselves (my girlfriend being one of them, she just can't play RTS's) on a basic level.

Never mind trying to also throw in micro and optimum game strategies into the mix.

froo··on StarCraft: The past, present and future
Honestly? They've been posting a lot more Mac developer jobs lately and their Mac client's quality for WOW has been degrading consistently over the last few major versions.

I'd say their devs familiar in that space are getting poached/spread to other teams and its not feasible to support OS X on team 4 at the moment.

froo··on StarCraft: The past, present and future
> at least in SC it's obvious.

I watched Life in the World Championships on the weekend do like 300APM constantly.

I'd honestly be going GG at about 1 minute in I think.

froo··on Remote Mexican village uses solar power to purify water
> At this scale, two solar panels, so something like 1200 watt hours of energy per day I don't think you'll find a wind generator and tower to beat the price.

There are many small scale wind generators that produce more than enough energy to run watermakers on yachts, much more cheaply solar panels for the energy output.

This has been a solved problem for quite a few years.

froo··on Google to Fold Chrome Operating System into Android
You could probably rewrite the previous statement as

"Alphabet/Google is killing any product that doesn't directly contribute ongoing revenue"

That would include Google Cloud like you mentioned and exclude Calico as that is currently a research project.

froo··on REI to shut on Black Friday to have employees go outside
I really don't get some public holidays either. Here in Victoria, Australia, they introduced a new public holiday this year the day before a sporting event to celebrate that sporting event (the AFL grand final). It's official name is - I kid you not "Friday before the AFL Grand Final"

It is incredibly bizarre.

froo··on REI to shut on Black Friday to have employees go outside
As a non American.. it really confuses the heck out of me that Black Friday sales are starting on the preceding Thursday at like 6pm in some cases.
froo··on The Zombie-Mobile: Car brands no longer reflect differentiation
I've not found this. My original iPad ran all of the apps that I use on my current one, it simply ran old versions of the apps. I only upgraded it about a month and a half ago simply because the screen failed (not bad for 5.5 years though). Agreed they don't support the OS anymore, but the bigger brand names (Facebook, Twitter, Netflix) still have apps that run perfectly fine on that hardware.
froo··on The Zombie-Mobile: Car brands no longer reflect differentiation
I only upgraded my original iPad a month and a half ago because the screen failed - it ran all of the apps that I used flawlessly.

My use case is perhaps in the minority (I used my iPad primarily to read, watch movies via Air Video, browse the web, keep up to date with friends via social media, bedtime email etc), but still did it 5.5 years strong.

froo··on The Zombie-Mobile: Car brands no longer reflect differentiation
You could more or less argue the same thing about phones.

They all have the same apps that 90% of people use (Facebook etc), they all have the same core features that 90% of people use (texting, internet and calling) and yet.. many people upgrade often.

I expect its just a newer = better mentality that humans share.

froo··on Apple tells U.S. judge 'impossible' to unlock new iPhones
Yeah I figured it got enough bad press to get priority fixing
froo··on Apple tells U.S. judge 'impossible' to unlock new iPhones
Not unlocked... The thing you're talking about gives access to photos and contacts[1] - still a fair amount of data, but not unlocked.

Not sure if it's been fixed yet or not, but you can just turn off Siri from the lock screen.

froo··on Google Nexus 5x and 6P
Because there is an opportunity cost to having an SD slot. Remember it takes up physical space inside the device, which could be used for more internal memory, battery space etc. they would have opted for something everyone wants over a smaller subset of users
froo··on John Carmack on Developing the Netflix App for Oculus
I imagine his managerial style is leading by example.

More of a "Hey guys, we're going in this direction, follow me!" over a "Hey, we're going this way, off you go!"

froo··on Ask HN: I'm owed 8k by a startup that's going under. What do I do?

I know you edited your post saying you would't, but do NOT do anything to their codebase/website etc. Don't even remotely entertain the idea.

Similarly, don't spout anything libellous incase they end up going on the offensive.

Best thing you could do is pick up the phone and actually call them and give them a chance to respond (they're humans just like you) and if they dodge your calls, go for a debt collection service.
