froidpink··on New era for Gibraltar with removal of border controls with Spain
Ceuta was never Moroccan. In fact, Morocco didn't even exist when Ceuta became part of Portugal first (1415) and then Spain (either 1580 or 1640). Ceuta was a part of the Spanish Visigoth kingdom in the 7th Century before the Islamic Conquest (which for some reason we don't call colonisation). Ceuta has always had a strong connection with the rulers of Iberia.

Gibraltar, on the other hand, was just lost in the War of Spanish succession to the British Empire, and has had a British connection to them since then, but never before

froidpink··on Never Give Them Your Face
It's because of Jonathan Haidt's book
froidpink··on Brussels launched an age checking app. Hackers took 2 minutes to break it
It's more a metonymy than a synecdoche
froidpink··on No Good Engineer Is Arrogant
Agree with the sentiment but the article feels AI generated. I cannot explain why
froidpink··on Why is there a tiny hole in the airplane window? (2023)
so if I block it with my finger from takeoff to cruise I can create a little explosion? Or is the issue the repeated cycles of pressure weakening the material over time?
froidpink··on New York to require social media platforms to display mental health warnings
Will HN add the label too?

Is this also the brand that tracks your driving data and sells it to insurance companies?
froidpink··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
Meta has been investing in AI for more than a decade
froidpink··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
Meta's profit has increased almost 2x since 2023. Meta makes money from advertisers spending money on Meta. So the profit growth from Meta does very much come from the real economy
froidpink··on My quest to make motorcycle riding that tad bit safer
I live next to a main road in London. As technology progresses, cars have gotten quieter, but for some reason motorcycles feel like they're becoming louder.

When I go read a book in the park, it's all very nice and quiet until a motorcycle arrives

When I want to sleep with the window open, if I hear any noise it's due to these motorbikes doing races at night.

If I was dictator for a year and didn't have policing resources to enforce noise control, I would just ban non-electric motorbikes

froidpink··on Pope Francis has died

froidpink··on Mario Vargas Llosa has died

froidpink··on The thing about Europe: it's the actual land of the free now
source?
froidpink··on The Generative AI Con
It's kind of analogous to the old taxi drivers who took pride in having a sixth sense knowing which route to take you, vs uber drivers who just blindly follow their navigation
froidpink··on US and UK refuse to sign AI safety declaration at summit
Not really.

Before the Reformation there had only been one schism (Eastern Roman Empire - Orthodox; Western Roman Empire - Catholic).

The Reformation was the time where fragmentation of Christianity really exploded

froidpink··on How WhatsApp for business changed the world
The stories feature is actually the most used stories product in the world (more than IG or Snapchat)

froidpink··on Bribery is largely subject to circumstance: study
The selfish / selfless binary is a bit simplistic to explain corruption.

If your brother killed someone, would you turn him over to the authorities? You can't answer this question by checking how selfish someone is - both options can be considered selfless acts.

If I remember correctly (can't find a source), places that answer yes to that question tend to have higher trust in institutions and lower rates of corruption

froidpink··on The Moral Economy of the Shire
Yeah but also what about second breakfast
froidpink··on Maps.fm: listen a podcast episode about that place on the map
Nice idea!

I found an error though. There's a podcast about the Camino de Costa Rica, a trail that goes from the Pacific to the Caribbean in Costa Rica. But the app has associated it to a street called Camino de Costa Rica in Chiclana, Spain.

froidpink··on NY Times Rides in Waymo Robotaxis in SF
Wouldn't the reduction in cost of rides vs Uber create massive demand for self-driving car rides, increasing congestion?
froidpink··on Corporate profits account for almost half the increase in Europe’s inflation
> Some of these higher profits will be passed on upstream

Profits by definition are not passed upstream, as profits are what remains after you take out costs from revenue. Anything that gets passed upstream comes from costs

froidpink··on Is Nerd Culture Dying?
> If there is any one person who still tries to consider things by some measure of quality, it’s like a needle sticking sharp in their side

While Sam's articles are quite enjoyable to read, I'm not sure this argument holds. If nerds don't care about quality they wouldn't spend hours complaining about how bad the new Star Wars films are

froidpink··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
If I am a Meta investor, and I see they use my capital to buy government bonds, why would I invest in them? I'd just buy the bonds myself.

Meta is supposed to be a Tech company and invest the capital they have in technology plays

froidpink··on Consultancies know less than they claim and cost more than they seem to
Consultancies are a way of ensuring best practices get shared across an industry without engaging in monopolistic behaviour
froidpink··on Screw motivation, what you need is discipline
I needed this, thanks! Now I'm motivated to be disciplined! Let's see how long that lasts
froidpink··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
How can you say TikTok is not full of divisive content when kids and teens are quoting Andrew Tate cos they see him there
