froglets··on Ford to drop AM radio in new models, except commercial vehicles
No one really knows the listenership stats for radio, the method used to come up with numbers is appalling.
froglets··on TikTok Congress Hearing
Here’s the source for The Rolling Stones article about it.

froglets··on TikTok Congress Hearing
TikTok was already banned once by Trump. It was removed from app stores for new downloads but still worked if already installed.

ETA: Here’s one article I was able to find about it buried under more recent ones. I’m not sure how long it was removed for, but I do remember checking the Apple App Store at the time and not being able to find it, though it still worked if already installed.

froglets··on There have been 562 bank failures since 2000
Is it just the tech industry though? It sounds like they invested too much of their deposits in mortgage backed securities, which doesn’t really have to do with tech?
froglets··on Scientists discover receptor that blocks Covid-19 infection
I think the title/article uses the word infection when they should be using disease.
froglets··on Effective altruism has a sexual harassment problem, women say
I had very noticeable withdrawal after 3 weeks of using opiates as prescribed for a ruptured disc. Stopped because I was pain free a few days after surgery to fix it, and felt like I was going to die.
froglets··on Yahoo is making a return to search
I googled how to turn pie crust into cookie dough today and nothing but those awful SEO recipe blogs. I really miss when search results were authentic content.
froglets··on FCC proposes $504k fine for broadcaster's misuse of Emergency Alert System tones
Is there any reason they couldn’t keep the ad online or in a podcast?
froglets··on The audacity of Apple Podcasts
There’s also a growing number of podcasts you can only listen to if you subscribe to Amazon Music.
froglets··on U.S. stock market returns – a history from the 1870s to 2022
Didn’t Apple already move to Ireland for the tax breaks?
froglets··on Voice assistants failed because they serve their makers more than help users
Voice assistants are still great for kids who are too young to read or google things. A child can ask google assistant how to prevent spaghetti sticking together and get a better answer than a lot of parents would give them. They are really useful as media players too, especially the ones that can also control a tv and soundbar.
froglets··on Ask HN: Does allowing downvoting encourage groupthink?
There was an intj forum that was kind of like an off topic HN, but it went private years ago.
froglets··on Is this the end of social networking?
There is an appeal to TikTok that I haven’t noticed elsewhere, but it is hard to explain. Content trends are like a game of telephone, so it’s interesting to see what creators choose to carry over into their own content and pass along. It’s fascinating to watch trends evolving so quickly and imo those trends are a special kind of authentic content space that advertisers haven’t really been able to break into and ruin yet.
froglets··on “No convincing evidence” that depression is caused by low serotonin levels
My theory is that depression is situational and doing things changes our situation, hopefully to one that is less depressing. Thinking about things isn’t very helpful if you don’t actually do anything. Medications can help people think less and do more, and do seem to be one of many correlates of depression.
froglets··on Ask HN: What do you use for parental control?
My kids are younger and don’t have phones yet, so all we do is set tablet, pc, and console to screen time off during the time they are supposed to be sleeping. My 10 year old’s computer is set up at a desk we share in our living room, and we had a lot of conversations about online safety etc.

I am trying to be less controlling than comes naturally and giving them more trust and privacy and hopefully less likely to hide things from us. I also figure now is the best time for my kids to make mistakes, since they are still young enough to let us guide them through dealing with it.

froglets··on Why is the nuclear power industry stagnant?
UAE are building nuclear plants as well.
froglets··on CDC concerned about possible undetected monkeypox spread in U.K
This article doesn’t say whether the people were in contact with pet prairie dogs, but I think that’s how people usually catch monkey pox. We have a case in Massachusetts too right now and prairie dogs were banned as pets here because of an outbreak 20 or so years ago.
froglets··on Public health agency tracked Canadians' movements via phone data during pandemic
This is one of the most wholesome uses of location data I’ve heard about. There was a NYT article a few years ago about the data brokers who sell this info, and how easy it was to deanonymize if you know where a specific person is at certain times. The journalist did this using Trump as an example, matching the location data in reports to where he had been seen on live tv.

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/12/19/opinion/locat...

I am really curious who else buys this kind of data and what it’s used for. I’ve heard commercial real estate owners have also used it to track how many people are returning to offices so they can predict what their tenants will do when it comes time to renew the leases.

froglets··on Ask HN: Is it still possible to live without a bank account?
If you don’t have an account to deposit a check into, you can usually take it to the issuing bank to cash it. I’ve done this many times at many different banks, the only place to charge a fee was BoA.
