frockington1··on The takeover of America's legal system
People to tend to buy the best they can afford. I don't think this is unique to the legal system
frockington1··on US Federal Reserve raises interest rates for first time since 2018
They did the absolute minimum to appear to be able to say they are dong something. With official inflation nearing 8%, this is nowhere near enough. SO far equity markets agree this is effectively nothing
frockington1··on Some tiny personal programs I've written
I was ineligible to adopt a Daschund from a shelter because my property doesn't have 1 acre of fenced in yard. Other places required 2 veterinarian references (we had 1 reference due to owning a cat). It can be a lot harder than people think to adopt a dog from a shelter
frockington1··on Code ownership, stewardship, or free-for-all?
Too be fair I did the same thing 2 years ago and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Drank to much microservice koolaid and ended up with 12 services. Consolidated it down to 7 once initial micro high wore off
frockington1··on U.S. Secret Service Launches Cryptocurrency Awareness Hub
How will the government know whos door to kick down? Your wallet doesn't have a physical address.... unless you're hoarding your money on an exchange
frockington1··on Love is biological bribery?
I agree, at some point drilling down lower on a biological scale provides no additional value. "Love is nothing but atomic particles interacting" is the logical next step that is just as useless to state
frockington1··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
I a lot of areas cops weren't allowed to stop people due to the plague. Only took a few days for that message to reach the general public. Great fun
frockington1··on Is this the end of the Cannonball Run?
From the post I don't see any evidence that they killed or even injured anybody.
frockington1··on BBC cryptocurrency documentary pulled from air at last minute
Any evidence this is the privileged class using it for capital flight and tax evasion and not the common man freeing himself from the economic authorities? In my opinion it doesn't matter. Good for all involved who are taking back control of their wealth
frockington1··on BBC cryptocurrency documentary pulled from air at last minute
Look at Turkish Lira inflows into crypto in recent months. You'll see the value. Also check out the inflow of USD as the Federal Reserve printed trillions of new dollars
frockington1··on BBC cryptocurrency documentary pulled from air at last minute
The idea is it's not beholden to a government (though still somewhat centralized somewhere). Crypto is helping people in Turkey store value. With current inflation and economic conditions in the US and Europe more may need it in the near future.
frockington1··on Running Lisp in Production (2020)
Its programming in its purest form, lambda calculus
frockington1··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Add NYC to that list as well. There's no reason to move to either of those cities in 2022.
frockington1··on Austria's data protection authority has found that Google Analytics is illegal
I like the theory however, I don't think a state owned and funded initiative could ever compete with Microsoft/Google/Amazon etc....
frockington1··on Austria's data protection authority has found that Google Analytics is illegal
Can you think of a good alternative other than outlawing Microsoft 365? I want these services to be spread out however this particular idea would make the EU even more sluggish than it already is
frockington1··on Austria's data protection authority has found that Google Analytics is illegal
So the entire EU is going to be forced to use Open Office or some other equivalent? Non tech people will hate this and it will cripple many businesses that rely on Microsoft Excel. You'd be surprised how much of the world economy is based on emailing Excel sheets back and forth
frockington1··on Austria's data protection authority has found that Google Analytics is illegal
Based on the results of GDPR, it'll probably just result in more annoying sites that users will avoid due to all of the pop up banners. Hopefully I'm wrong, I wish there was strong competition from Europe
frockington1··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
What are the big name tech companies in Amsterdam (sorry, dumb american here)
frockington1··on I think I know why you can't hire engineers right now
Most vacation packages for software devs are unlimited or in the 3-4 week range. Plenty of time for a long vacation in the Spring and a shorter one in the fall. It's one of the only things that keeps me going through it all
frockington1··on Rust in 2022
Java today looks nothing like Java 5 however it's largely backwards compatible. I hope that Rust isn't afraid of making larger changes to stay relevant. Java 8 is what brought a lot of people back after looking at more functional jvm languages such as Scala
frockington1··on Rust in 2022
Personally I would like a standard http library that has async and non async methods. One of the things that initially turned me away from Rust was the complexity of finding a library to use for simple http requests. I know this is also a strength, but it makes the intro days incredibly challenging
frockington1··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
Fact checkers have determined this statement to be mostly false. While fact checkers have been proven over and over to be incorrect, we find the sarcastic tone of this post to be dangerous and have therefor decided the entire thing is false
frockington1··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
They've taken it a step further in recent years. Not only should you be shielded, but if you have wrong think then society should be shielded from you. Australia is the most extreme example but you can see the punishment of wrong think creeping up everywhere
frockington1··on Scientists believed Covid leaked from Wuhan lab, but feared debate could hurt
It's almost a religious cause to some people. If _______ is in Office than I must do anything I can to protect or remove them. I think it's a symptom of watching to much cable news and not talking to real people with opposing views. Sadly this spills over into what should be research and fact based studies
frockington1··on Health care is turning into a consumer product
In Norway a lot of it is paid for by oil. Once the world transitions to clean energy Norwegians will be in for a wake up call. In their defense they are trying to diversify but it's not an easy task
frockington1··on No one died in China of Covid since April 15th 2020
They covered up reeducation camps for a long time. A strong authoritarian government is much more capable at blatant corruption and conspiracy than western nations are used to.
frockington1··on What the world will be like in a hundred years (1922)
Reduced sodium probably lowered your blood pressure as well
frockington1··on Regulators Shut Down Lending Platform (YC Alum) LendUp
Isn't Italy topping the charts of countries in financial ruin? If it weren't for Greece being worse Italy would be in the headlines. If America is to change laws, it'd help to use a successful nation as an example
frockington1··on Regulators Shut Down Lending Platform (YC Alum) LendUp
Considering bonds are negative you're getting absolutely fleeced by the banks there
frockington1··on Regulators Shut Down Lending Platform (YC Alum) LendUp
Too be fair the person has to check a box saying they are knowledgeable about investment product. If they lie and then screw themselves over who cares, let them learn a lesson
