frob··on US Military says 3 service members have been killed
Under their military rules, they have an obligation to disregard illegal orders. This war was not declared by congress. It is illegal and unconstitutional. They are chosing to do this and are thus complicit.
frob··on Brookhaven Lab's RHIC concludes 25-year run with final collisions
I spent days and days inside the STAR control room in grad school, often during the 12:30am-7:30am graveyard shift. We needed to run 24/7 for efficiency reasons during the experimental season. Getting superconductors down to temp is costly, so once you get it there, it is go time all the time.

You had to stay on top of all the detectors and triggers, since every minute of beam time cost around $1k. You often sat around doing little, probably working on other research, and then would need to drop everything to reboot a detector so we could get back to collecting data.

RHIC is dead. Long live eRHIC.

frob··on Ireland will not participate in Eurovision if Israel takes part
Isreal has slaughtered over 60 thousand Palistinians. Israel is purposefully starving the rest. Israel uses desperate people searching for food as target practice as testified to by contractors working along side them.

But, apparently Israel holds no accountability or agency for this rampant slaughter.

frob··on NSF has suspended Terry Tao's grant
Thw law is very obviously being abused here by Trump and his administration to punish unfavored speech and unfavored groups. They dont care about equal protection one bit. They want to punish academics and universities so that Trump et al can controll their speech.
frob··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
"Attack" is when your arms get in the way of their baton swinging at your face.
frob··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
If you're not on multiple naughty lists by the end of this administration, you're doing something wrong.
frob··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
Authoritarian states often function via selective enforcement of laws. We see that here. They will use any angle, any technicality to remove someone. Lived here for almost 50 years and are a productive member of your community but you're on a stayed order of release pending you check in regularly and you do so? Sorry, we changed our minds and are deporting you because legally we can. Please come with us in the unmarked car. [0]

Tried to kill police officers while trying to overturn an election on behalf of the dear leader? We'll pardon you and give you a job on a task force about weaponization of government. [1]

The law will be applied to the harshest extent to those Trump and his ilk see as enemies and will be warped in favor of his current friends.

Or, as a Preuvian facist president put it: "For my friends, anything; for my enemies, the law!"

frob··on IDF officers ordered to fire at unarmed crowds near Gaza food distribution sites
I encourage you to read the quotes from Israeli political and social leaders in this piece: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/jun/27/israel...

> “The Gaza Strip should be flattened, and for all of them there is but one sentence, and that is death,” Yitzhak Kroizer, a member of national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir’s far-right Otzma Yehudit party, said in a radio interview.

Yitzhak is a current sitting member of the Knesset.

frob··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Such as the US secretary of "defense", Pete Hegseth, who has the Latin phrase for "god wills it" tattooed on his bicep. A phrase that is also the motto of the first crusade.
frob··on NSF faces shake-up as officials abolish its 37 divisions
The NSF funded my graduate research. It feels like someone is going through my past and burning all of the ladders that helped me grow and succeed.
frob··on Wikipedia’s nonprofit status questioned by D.C. U.S. attorney
Hi Tom.

You're burning your credibility here fast as the new moderator. dang derived his respect as an admin from not getting into fights in the threads. It additonaly tarnishes your credibility as you're doing this in defense of your employer. You look like a rage-poster who has the same response copied and ready to go from thread to thread.

Please take a moment to step back and examine if this is the image you want to be projecting as the official representative of YC and HN.

frob··on Whistleblower: DOGE Siphoned NLRB Case Data
It's currently showing up as flagged as a dupe and isn't anywhere on the first 3 pages.
frob··on CVE program faces swift end after DHS fails to renew contract [updated]
What you are saying is the fantastical kool-aid Fox News and alt-right media spin to you.

In the meantime, Trump is actually deporting people without due process to inhumane torture camps run by a dictator while openly bragging about it and defying court orders.

These two things are not the same.

frob··on Leaked data reveals Israeli govt campaign to remove pro-Palestine posts on Meta
I was there during the onavo scandal. It was straight up spyware. They would regularly show graphs of snapchat usage vs messenger vs whatsapp and the snapchat data was explicitly attributed to onovo logs.
frob··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
The public cruelty is the point. Make people suffer horrendously outsized consequences for the most minor of innocent infractions and it quickly sends a message that you're not welcome here.
frob··on Foreign visits into the U.S. fell off a cliff in March
Do not come here.

First, do it for your own safety. A wrong form or the wrong answer to a verbal question after 18 hours of travel could land you in weeks of brutal detention.

Second, do it to help the cause. We here in America need to suffer the consequences of our actions. We need to see conferences canceled. We need to see imports stopped. We need to see people refusing to bring their knowledge and expertise here.

It is going to be a long, dark four years for the globe. It's going to take all of us working from within and without to have any hope of dismantling this evil empire.

frob··on I'm the Canadian who was detained by ICE for two weeks
When the people in charge are acting like the dumbest bully from my grade school, then yes, it does sound like valid critism and a legitimate point of discussion.
frob··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
I submitted it as a post this week. It survived for about 3 minutes before being flagged as a dupe and then deleted without any link to the conversation it was supposedly a dupe of. I did some cursory searching and could not find another conversation.
frob··on Federal employees told to remove pronouns from email signatures by end of day
It's just all about respecting what people want to be called. What harm does that cause you, Andrew?
frob··on Federal employees told to remove pronouns from email signatures by end of day
Sadly, with this administration, the divisiveness, like the cruelty, is the point.
frob··on NIH hit with freezes on meetings, travel, communications, and hiring

frob··on Mixxx: GPL DJ Software
GNU General Public License: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License

It's one of several options for software licenses a developer or team can use when distributing a piece of software to help ensure that it and its derivates stay free and open-source.

frob··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
"For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law."
frob··on Meta's memo to employees rolling back DEI programs
I remember meeting Maxine Williams on my first day at Facebook. She gave a strong introductory address that left me with a deep appreciation of the value of diversity not just as a moral good, but as a good business decision. Seeing her work denigrated and thrown under the bus to appease the bigotry of Trump, Elon, and their odious ilk is a gut blow.

We are in for some dark times.

frob··on Show HN: Struggle with CSS Flexbox? This Playground Is for You
Years ago I printed out the poster version of https://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/a-guide-to-flexbox/. It has lived on my desk since then. Every time I need to work with flexbox, it moves to the top of the pile and I'm good to go.

Same with their grid guide.

frob··on Officer who ignored NYPD's 'courtesy cards' receives $175K settlement
There won't be any DoJ intervention for two reasons:

1. The existence of these cards has been widely known about for well over a decade.

2. The DoJ is full of cops as well.
