frizlab··on Firebase SDK is CRASHING ALLLL iOS Apps, since today morning
All iOS apps that are using firebase… It’s an important distinction.
frizlab··on The Post-AGI Era
haha same
frizlab··on Search – A small, fast WebKit browser for macOS
Looking at it:

- Resources are 130MiB, including a phishing filter set json file of 18 MiB, phishing hash prefixes of 6 MiB, lots of images and other resources (js, etc.)

- The main binary is 87MiB

- Another binary of 32MiB for “private information removal”

- VPN proxy extension is 17MiB, the VPN binary is 21MiB + 10MiB in another file

- The network protection app extension is 25MiB + another 25 in another file

The rest is frameworks (mostly Lottie and GRDB, in terms of space).

frizlab··on Tutoring company tells parents to save their money and 'use AI instead'
> I feel using AI in place of pedagogy will have similar results.

I think it will actually be much, much worse.

frizlab··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
And yet, none of that invalidates what I said.
frizlab··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
I have done a few open-source projects (none of those took off, but that’s OK). I did them because I wanted to give to the people, not greedy corporations. It was an implicit contract with the world, which has been broken by AI. You can say “but it was never written!” Maybe. It still hurts. (And it is also not really true: for example MIT requires attribution, which I’m still waiting to see in all of the AI-generated/AI-helped projects…)

It was also a joy to write things and know certain like-minded people would like it. Now I don’t really want to do that anymore.

frizlab··on That About Wraps It Up for Stock Mac UI
Interesting take, but I do not agree. I actively want much more apps to look stock. IMHO any apps, if they are not games, should have stock UI.
frizlab··on Obscura: VPN that can't log your activity
How do you compare with iCloud Private Relay (with the obvious exception that private relay only works on macOS, and in specific apps only)?
frizlab··on I said no and Apple said yes
Most companies did that before Apple, yes. I hate that trend.
frizlab··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
SIP is a good thing and prevents a lot of (usually PEBKAC) problems. It is also the direction where Linux is going (is now? or maybe they gave up? idk, it’s been a while since I heard about immutable distros).

For tech-aware people, it is probably not necessary indeed. However, given that now “tech-aware” people are running completely random and unvalidated scripts w/o second thoughts (or even first thoughts actually) on their main machine, I’d say the “tech-aware” line is very very high…

frizlab··on Turn off and restrict access to Apple Intelligence features on Mac
You can disable SIP if you want. You can run whatever you want on your machine. Disabling SIP is indeed a security risk… then again, so is running something as root. Having a Mac w/o SIP is no more a security risk than having a Linux w/o a r/o kernel AFAIK.
frizlab··on I analyzed 26,776 tic tac toe games and found first-mover wins 39% of the time
AFAIK if you start the game you have a chance to win if the other plays poorly, otherwise it’s a draw.
frizlab··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
Good one
frizlab··on Claude Code now reads AGENTS.md if there is no Claude.md
If only there was a technology that existed to link files together… /s
frizlab··on I don't like passkeys
Interesting. For the GAFAM yeah, I got those. But for banks, in my country at least, I’m not sure they are even allowed to use passkeys. Instead we have a glorious numerical keypad where we have to manually click on the keys and the keys are never at the same place. I’d love to have passkeys instead…
frizlab··on I don't like passkeys
Where do you have so many sites asking for passkeys? I’m desperately trying to have more but I have ~1.1k passwords in my password manager and only 63 passkeys!
frizlab··on I don't like passkeys
Personally I love passkeys and think it’s not deployed enough. It works great (for me anyways!) and it is SO MUCH better than “login with email” that is everywhere now.
frizlab··on Elyx
By the creators of Sketch.
frizlab··on Leaving Linux
> Every OS breaks

It’s been a very long time since macOS broke for me. Sure, there are bugs (especially in the window manager), but they are consistent.

frizlab··on The case against JPEG XL
> only roughly 11.9% smaller than lossless WebP anyway

That’s huge, no?

frizlab··on Copying login keychains between Macs fails on Secure Enclave Macs with Tahoe
Or create a separate keychain db and use that. The encryption is only done for the login keychain.
frizlab··on Copying login keychains between Macs fails on Secure Enclave Macs with Tahoe
> You can export your passwords to a plain text CSV from the original computer.

Exporting a private key from a keychain is hard to automate (the password of the keychain is asked for all exports, and HAS to be typed manually IIRC).

frizlab··on Copying login keychains between Macs fails on Secure Enclave Macs with Tahoe
Passwords and passkeys are in the iCloud keychain. You can technically save passwords in the login keychain (not sure about passkeys), but if you’re using the Passwords app it will be in the iCloud one.
frizlab··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
Yup. They have much more bandwidth to test things, but no original thoughts (and tbh, not thoughts at all, actually).
frizlab··on My Mental Model of AI Broke on September 8
They still are parrots. Just properly trained with a lot of data. Doesn’t make them not useful. But that’s what they are though.
frizlab··on Jellyfin 12.0
Yeah I have Infuse only, and am happy with it. No need for jellyfin or whatever else. Honestly Infuse may be one of my best app purchases of these past 10 years…
frizlab··on Pigeon, a signed Pass for what a sub-agent may do
ssshhhhhht, AI is intelligent now, no need to read any of its output! /s
frizlab··on America's two largest school districts impose AI moratoriums
“Good news” yeah…
frizlab··on .gitignore Everything by Default
For files like `.DS_Store`, technically yes. Usually the people do not have a proper global gitignore, so we put these files in the gitignore of the repo, but it’s not repo-related, it’s OS-related… Same goes for editor files. The editor is something user-related, not project related (except e.g. for iOS development where the IDE is kind of more or less imposed).
frizlab··on .gitignore Everything by Default
> why not just do an initial setup step to gitignore the usual files?

Or even better, have a proper global gitignore file on your computer…
