frik··on Virtual Keyboard Developer Leaked 31M Client Records
One day we will find out what Windows 10 sends home too. Is it "only" ad tracking data like ads, or what several security advisors suggest it acts like a key logger?

The problem I see, a smartphone is me thing. A PC of your lawyer, your doctors is a hell another dimension. And unfortunately it's a group of jobs like these that run on Windows Professional often without an admin or AD server. Guess what, it's a wet dream for them.

frik··on Are “landscrapers” the new skyscrapers?
Google's 111 8th Ave NYC building completed in 1932, at 2.9 million square feet (270,000 m2), it is currently the city's fourth largest building in terms of floor area as of 2014. It was the largest building until 1963 when the 3.14-million-square-foot (292,000 m2) MetLife Building opened.
frik··on Rocket – A Rust game running on WASM
It sucks, there is no way to view the code in Chrome DevTools. The WASM file isn't listed in DevTools "source" tab at all.

https://aochagavia.github.io/js/rocket.wasm

A binary blob, that cannot be viewed except with an offline hexeditor.

WASM sucks. Please remove support and go back to ASM.js, at least it was readable and fast. Or transpile to JS in the first place. Thanks for destroying the open web.

frik··on Web Assembly now supported across all browsers
End of patch support of Windows 7 is 2020, of Windows 8 is 2023, of Windows 10 Mobile is 2020, of rest of Windows 10 is 2025. No one cares about your PR speak.

frik··on Web Assembly now supported across all browsers
We should sometimes pause, and think about the disadvantages a new technique will bring to the web.

I am completely fine with asm.js.

Though WebASM is a like a wet dream for big corp with mass of legacy code in C++. We will see Office running on WebASM and other closed binary blobs in near future. It's very contrary to the concept of the open web - do you want to live in AOL-land again, were everything is closed off? No? Anyway great you helped them. I fear WebASM has several downsides that will harm young startups a lot in near future - only unicorns and big corps will benefit, it will be a win-win, less competition, because of harder entry to market, and they can ship their decades old C++ blobs as a service. It's time to wake up, and stop WebASM or severe limit it's functionality. Where is Mozilla foundation? Or is the new Mozilla just another startup, backed 90% by Google money.

frik··on Linux on an 8-bit microcontroller
So next, let's run Windows on a DEC PDP-10?

Why DEC PDP-10? Gates and Allen had neither an interpreter nor even an Altair system, for their first Altair BASIC product of Microsoft. However, Allen had written an Intel 8008 emulator for their previous venture Traf-O-Data that ran on a PDP-10 time-sharing computer. [1]

Another fun fact, Apple used Cray XMP supercomputers to design Apple hardware [2] while Seymour Cray used an Apple desktop some of the time when designing the Cray-2 [3].

[1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altair_BASIC

[2] http://wiki.c2.com/?AppleCrayComputer

[3] "Cray and Apple, seemly at opposite ends of the computer spectrum, do have some subtle links. It was known that Seymour Cray used an Apple desktop some of the time when designing the Cray-2. It is also known that Apple had a sequence of Cray machines starting in March 1986 with an XMP/28 followed by another XMP in Feb 1991. A YMP-2E arrived later in 1991 and finally an EL from Dec 1993 to Jun 98. It is said that Apples first XMP was bought by Steve Jobs after he just walked into the Cray facility in Mendota Heights." http://wiki.c2.com/?AppleCrayComputer

frik··on Upcoming HDMI 2.1 Features
DisplayPort might be cheap, as it's royalty free, but one has to buy a cable dongle to convert it, as displays rarely feature a DisplayPort.

None of my business monitors, TV nor projectors have DisplayPort, but every notebook, discrete graphic card came with a DisplayPort - so they first thing is to buy another dongle to convert DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI.

frik··on Upcoming HDMI 2.1 Features
I would favor if monitors, displays, and projectors have both USB-C and Ethernet. At the moment all types of displays still have DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI or even legacy like VGA, SCART.

USB-C and Ethernet are capable of 10+ Gbit speed, and the cables are cheap, not the premium one pays for HDMI 2ab cables. Also Ethernet cables with CAT6+ are found in most buildings. If you want to connect a big screen flat TV dozens meters away or a projector 50 meters away, you need repeater devices and fragile cable arrangements, while with Ethernet cables it would be no problem.

frik··on Taking a sabbatical to work on Ruby profiling tools
> https://jvns.ca/blog/2016/06/12/a-weird-system-call-process-...

> does this tool, that can spit out Ruby stack traces quickly for any Ruby program with debugging symbols enabled, actually exist somewhere and I just don’t know about it?

To your question in your other post you linked in your post: Maybe you mean APM, it stands for application performance monitoring. Search for "Ruby APM". Maybe the can inspire you for your tool. Good luck

frik··on A Generation Lost in the Bazaar (2012)
MySpace was ColdFusion, running on dotNet based ColdFusion runtime on Windows servers.

SunOS - which well known dotCom era startups run their web servers on SunOS? (beside Sun) There was also SGI with Irix, etc but beside some graphical niche market, etc. How is this relevant to dotcom?

frik··on A Generation Lost in the Bazaar (2012)
> Yes, a lot of terrible engineering happened during the dotcom boom, and most of it was proprietary code running on old-school Unix servers.

That's not true. Linux was very popular in 1998-2000 already, with RedHat and SuSE distros everywhere. Server software was usually written with CGI api, in C, Perl or PHP. Also Windows NT 4 and 2000 servers with ASP (classic) with web server software written in VBScript or JavaScript (yes, ASP classic had JavaScript/JScript support on server). Well known top websites of dotCom era like EBay and MySpace run on Windows servers back then. Back then Windows was a lot more popular on servers than nowadays. Also old school UNIX wasn't such a popular choice - name me five well known dotCom era startups that run on UNIX (in 1998 to 2001) instead of Linux or Windows.

@downvoter: care to explain?

frik··on Most popular Python packages now support Python 3
Does Facebook use Python 3 for Facebook frontend website? Or in PHP/Hack? (Facebook website frontend is well known to be in PHP/Hack)
frik··on Yelp Wi-Fi
All these disposable temporary email providers don't support IMAP and are temporary. I need aa hassle free solution (also on smartphone - IMAP).

Can someone suggest more free traditional email providers (beside GMail, Outlook.com, Yahoo) that are free forever, require no phone number to register, support IMAP.

frik··on Yelp Wi-Fi
Can you suggest a email provider.

It's getting harder, as there are only a few remaining free email provider. And if you don't login, some delete the account after 6 months, or some don't have proper spam protection in case I want to open the inbox and find a registration confirmation mail.

frik··on Alpine Linux 3.7.0 Released
Love that Alpine Linux uses OpenRC, and has no plans to switch to systemd. https://forum.alpinelinux.org/forum/general-discussion/alpin...

Edit: why downvote, I like it that way, leaner OpenRC is great

frik··on Two Factor Auth List
Unfortunately iTAN's are no more.

iTAN is solid secure concept, if you take normal post service for granted, handle the paper with care, and don't fall for "phishing attacks" where the attacker tricks the user into logging into a forged copy of the bank's website.

From a security point of view (imho, please correct me) is iTAN more secure than SMS-token (mTAN), email-token and app-token. You simply cannot beat analog offline security, as the iTAN-list exists only in two places on the server and printed out on paper (user).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transaction_authentication_num...

iTAN (Indexed_TAN) article:

"Indexed TANs reduce the risk of phishing. To authorize a transaction, the user is not asked to use an arbitrary TAN from the list but to enter a specific TAN as identified by a sequence number (index). As the index is randomly chosen by the bank, an arbitrary TAN acquired by an attacker is usually worthless.

However, iTANs are still susceptible to man-in-the-middle attacks, including phishing attacks where the attacker tricks the user into logging into a forged copy of the bank's website and man-in-the-browser attacks which allow the attacker to secretly swap the transaction details in the background of the PC as well as to conceal the actual transactions carried out by the attacker in the online account overview.

Therefore, in 2012 the European Union Agency for Network and Information Security advised all banks to consider the PC systems of their users being infected by malware by default and use security processes where the user can cross-check the transaction data against manipulations like for example (provided the security of the mobile phone holds up) mTAN or smartcard readers with an own screen including the transaction data into the TAN generation process while displaying it beforehand to the user (chipTAN)."

frik··on Software Giant Autodesk to Axe 13% of Global Workforce
CATIA is the defacto industry leader in 3D CAD.

AutoCAD is the defacto industry leader in 2D CAD (given got some 3D support too). Though as more and more companies are moving to 3D CAD, they are looking for 3D CAD software built from the ground up for 3D CAD.

3D CAD is not just 3D, it's about parametric geometric kernel, CAM, CAE.

AutoDesk's "real 3D CAD" is called Autodesk Inventor. Competitors are SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Siemens NX, PTC Creo Direct/Pro, CATIA, FreeCAD.

frik··on Auto increment is a terrible idea
UUID are ugly, hard to remember in your head, take a lot of space, etc.

I favor auto increment IDs any day, except in specific situations. It's worth to consider to learn how other sites dealt with IDs in public, while internally using auto increment IDs. Short: there are several strategies.

But to each their own, if you love UUID, just use it, but don't write lame blog posts how terrible things are.

frik··on Hello, world: this is WikiTribune
It will get killed by him (isn't Jim involved in both Wikipedia AND Wikia), just like Wikia meant the end of the "trivia" sections that were very popular on Wikipedia and featured on most articles up to the release of Wikia, then they got transferred over and banned from Wikipedia.
frik··on Western Digital Plans to Ship More Than One Billion RISC-V Cores a Year
If RISC-V turns out a competitor to ARM based Raspberry PI than it would be great.

If this initiative turns out to be a smart hard disk (HDD) that runs yet another full CPU with Minix like the infamous Intel ME gate. Then we don't need it, the world needs not another spy device, aka insecure hardware that has full acccess, yet is invisible to the users (= owner) of the device.

frik··on Hello, world: this is WikiTribune
I guess this will mean the dead to WikiNews (https://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page ) of Wikipedia. The history showed us...

Jim has the power to remove things of Wikipedia and turn it t his own startup for profit.

Remember the trivia sections in almost all a Wikipedia articles. Suddenly one day, Jim launched Wikia and in the same swoosh trivia sections got transferred over to Wikia and banned on Wikipedia. Including many articles about movie characters got removed from Wikipedia.

We have to thank him for the initial Wikipedia, and for the short stint of Wikia Web search (the he unfortunately killed after a short while). But he should not be involved with Wikipedia anymore, in case he is still lurking around.

frik··on Waterfox – Firefox fork retaining XUL support
Is it too much to ask for a simple shortcut, like Ctrl+K

Ctrl+T ... new Tab

Ctrl+K ... dublicate Tab

Ctrl+W ... close Tab

I won't start clicking around on the tabs. Please add the missing shortcut (Ctrl+K)

frik··on macOS High Sierra: Anyone can login as “root” with empty password
It reminds me of the Windows 95/98 login.

frik··on Waterfox – Firefox fork retaining XUL support

  * addition of duplicate tab option
Why can't Firefox and Chrome add this functionality?

How it should work: In IE11 it's Ctrl+K and it opens a new tab (a deep-copy of the current one, incl history so one click on the back button in the new cloned tab.

frik··on Formula 1 e-sports now more exciting than the real thing
Formula 1 is okay. I am not sure if Liberty Media knows what treasure they bought, at the moment all their minor adjustments were only confusing. Sure, I wouldn't mind if they go back to V12 engines like in 1999. But the current season, and the last few years were fine. A lot better than the Schumacher and Vettel era, that was a boring time. Nowadays 3 teams have competitive cars, and three more teams (or so) drive for the podium and get there occasionally.

Dirt Rally is not for me, it's like Project Cars unrealistic hard while not be very realistic, in contrary to Grandprix Legends and Assetto Corsa. Dirt 3+4 with this Ken Block shit or random generated boring generic tracks - no thanks. DiRT 2 is still the best in presentation (it looks better in 4K on PC than DiRT Rally, see YouTube videos), DiRT 2 has a nice single campaign, a nice menu, great tracks in 8 different regions, a great physics engine and car deformation and so much more - I don't get why their newer games all are a lot less fun to drive and in general build together so lackluster. Maybe they should take a break for a year, not releasing yearly updates to F1, DiRT (and DiRT). A new DiRT 2 and a new GRID 1 and a new DriveClub would be awesome - do it.

frik··on Formula 1 e-sports now more exciting than the real thing
F1 2017 is not a simulator. It is a okay game, that lacks some love (presentation and menu is boring and lackluster). I fondly remember Grand Prix 1-4 games, that at least realistically represented everything going on in Formula 1 and had quite realistic physics, etc for their time. Unfortunately the last Codemasters game that were awesome and really polished were GRID 1 and DiRT 2. Now Codemasters owns the DriveClub devs, I hope we see a new polished game from them again.
frik··on Infinitown – A WebGL Experiment
Is it a Unity app exported to HTML5 (w JS and WebGL)?
frik··on Ubuntu 17.10: Return of the Gnome
Will try. At least with Ubuntu 17 from spring, it had no related menu entries to open a tab in Terminal app.
frik··on Munich confirms switch to Windows 10
Here is why - even if I risk more downvotes or getting flagged down:

If someone flags your comment on HN, you can only post about 4 comments per day and news submit feature is "practically" disabled - HN displays a "slow down, don't submit so fast" Error message which of course makes little sense. Also your comments will start with a lower/negative value behind the scene, you will find your posts on the bottom even if it says 1 votes, and other comments with negative value may be above yours.

There is a lot of monitoring by companies contracted obviously by $$ going on, to shape PR and public opinion. Be it employees, fanboys, or paid PR drones, it doesn't matter, they are quite toxic to the community at large I would say. I would wish more moderation in regard, and the removal of the downvote- and flag-functionality for everyone (but moderators).

frik··on Ubuntu 17.10: Return of the Gnome
Is KDE back to KDE3 functionality? If so I will give it another try. But KDE4.x was sooo bad, it was a complete rewrite and every single decision was ill-advised. In retrospective it almost looks like someone had great fun running both KDE and Gnome to the ground and keep users away from Linux desktop. I mean KDE3 and Gnome2 were good, almost perfect. KDE was more Windows alike and had ton of settings to adjust things. Gnome 2 was more MacOS alike and more opinionated with little settings. When KDE4 tanked, I switched to Gnome 2. When Gnome 3 tanked I switched to Ubuntu with Unity. Now Ubuntu 17 tanked with its shitty Gnome 3 where Terminal app has no tab-support and Gnome Texteditor is a weird zombie that lost most of the Gnome3 Texteditor functionality and toolbars. I hope Ubuntu 18 LTS comes with some reasonable improvements to Gnome 3, or I will look elsewhere.
