friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
Thank you for your kind words!

> industry filter should be case insensitive

Will fix!

> Quite limited when trying to find the website of a specific company

Yeah so the index is not entirely complete and/or correct. The goal for now is not to be perfect but to produce different results than your usual search avenues to broaden your horizons.

friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
Sure thing no worries, happy for any users or feedback at this point :)

Cheers

friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
I'm more surprised to hear that than you are, haha!

Jokes aside that is really great to hear. Our index size and data quality is probably 2% of where I want it to be - but it takes a lot of computing power and effort to get there so I decided to sniff around for feedback sooner than later.

So your positive feedback is very much appreciated, thank you.

friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
Basically I have at my fingertips a lot of tech brainpower who can knock out products pretty quickly. Being techies our sales chops are subpar so I thought about owning the data myself and learning the ins and outs of sales through getting closer to the industry.

At the same time this project forces me to handle data at scale (few terrabytes currently but I estimate we will need about 2 petabytes of storage realistically at minimum) and that comes handy for AI related projects. That's pretty much my personal motivation for this.

friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
To avoid getting ourselves into trouble all I can say for now is that we have not scraped LinkedIn. We do index the websites ourselves though, we are not using Google or any other parties. The goal is to collate biz intelligence from a lot of sources and augment a normal web index that way.
friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
That's definitely a sensible suggestion - to be fair I expected the sufficiently interested parties to DM me for a free account - I did not word my intention sufficiently but at this stage we are looking for salespeople to give feedback.
friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
For now pretty much, all filters are company oriented currently. In the future this will change.
friendly_chap··on Show HN: A new search engine for finding leads
Probably I didn't get the following idea across properly: this is not searching a company dataset. This is just like Google - as in it searches web pages, but with the added ability to filter by owning company industry, size, location, or later once we support it even stuff like tech stack used etc (in that regard it's somewhat adjacent to tools like Wappalyzer), or the HTTP headers present, or any kind of crazy stuff.

If that's still not unique enough (not sure TBH) I guess I should adjust the copy :)). I'm not great at writing copy.

Anyway this is still no a fully fleshed out idea, mostly just scratching my own itch and conquering the difficulties of storing billions of pages.

Thanks for the question and any feedback is appreciated.

> Our solution is open source but the backend and API are proprietary, and can be obtained via paid license.

So not open source at all then. You can't even "not open source" the frontend anyway (maybe minify and obfuscate).

friendly_chap··on Loss of smell may be an early sign of brain diseases
I was similar to you (maybe not to that extreme) and I don't see zinc mentioned in this post.

I did have a minimal sense of smell, as in I could faintly smell perfumes if I sprayed it on my nose but often not animal feces or similar.

I started supplementing zinc because I suspected I was deficient in it and in about two weeks of taking 25-40mg per day (be careful, 40mg is the upper limit) I started smelling things properly.

It got to a point now after a few years that I can tell what happened in a room in the previous 30 mins when I step in.

There are upsides (smelling the sea) and downsides (dirty humans are truly something) but I love every minute of it.

friendly_chap··on Make microservices look like monoliths
Not much is monolithic about this tbh. It's just trying to hide the architecture implementation detail (monolith vs microservices) instead of exposing it like most existing frameworks.

IMHO the monolithic microservice (or distributed monolith) is when you don't have firm service boundaries - eg. services can read each other data if they want, sidestepping endpoints/handlers.

Actio avoids that mistake. Each service has its own database.

friendly_chap··on Make microservices look like monoliths
Hi! OP here.

Yeah in part my motivation for open sourcing this was the fact I kept reading on HN how microservices should be an implementation detail etc. in the past 6 months. I totally agree with that sentiment, hence Actio. For the direction I can take some responsibility but not for the details (yet) ;).

friendly_chap··on Make microservices look like monoliths
> I’d rather compose my systems with widely understood and commonly used components

OP here. Fortunately the authors of the components you use didn't get discouraged by comments like this otherwise they would've never been written ; )

friendly_chap··on Make microservices look like monoliths
Hi, author here.

I agree 100%. However after spending 10 years doing microservices everyone wants me to do microservices, despite me telling them what you just said. It's a positive feedback loop.

This project is just an exploration of providing teams with a low (no?) cost way of doing microservices - I also kinda enjoy hacking on things like this. Still in progress though so use it at your own risk.

friendly_chap··on Actio: A Node.js framework that makes monoliths and microservices look the same
Hi there,

I was reading discussions on HN about how microservices should be an implementation detail when I realized I do use a backend system like that for teaching junior engineers.

Decided to open source it. Hope you like it.

friendly_chap··on Show HN: Actio, a (young) Node.js framework that makes microservices invisible
Hey!

Good question! If you mean transactions across services then no, I do not plan to. I think often if you need distributed db transactions then you built a distributed monolith.

I've just woken up but I will spend some time thinking about this and writing some proposals about this as it is a huge topic.

  Distributed computing, Microservices, DevEx
  Résumé/CV: https://www.linkedin.com/in/crufter, http://github.com/crufter
  Email: dobronszki@gmail.com
Spent the last 10 years mostly working with microservices and Go based startups, although I would not recommend microservices to most companies. I can save you a few million dollars if you wonder why.

I'm most passionate about improving DevEx in companies. Things like writing custom ORMs for lesser known/supported databases (see eg. https://github.com/gocassa/gocassa). Mostly worked with startups from $2M-$500M funding range, with the occasional enterprise gig.

Used to run a chicken shop as a hobby project which made me careful of accepting management positions, haha, people are hard. I would love to be a product owner, I mostly designed the https://m3o.com/ product with the CEO recently and implemented the MVP of it. It's open source stuff, check it out https://github.com/m3o

Currently working for a US startup but my contract is ending soon.

Cheers!

friendly_chap··on Cats learn the names of their friend cats in their daily lives
My girlfriend and I recently separated. She took one cat, and one stayed with me. During a discussion in her apartment she mentioned the cat that stayed with me by name. Her cat frantically started looking around the apartment to see if his old buddy is there.

Such amazing creatures.

friendly_chap··on My out-of-body experience in a sensory deprivation tank
My anecdote: a friend of mine gave me a ticket for a float tank in London for free. Decided to try.

As others mention in this thread, it was not completely depriving of stimuli, but close enough. The air felt a bit colder than the water, so I definitely felt where one ends and the other begins. It was a 60 mins session, first 10-15 mins with relaxing music.

What was immediately noticeable to me is that I initially had incredible back pain. I realized this was just tight muscles. After some 20mins this went away and I actually felt like after a massage. Very interesting and I was almost disorientingly calm.

On out of body experiences and other magic: At around 45 mins I had slight hallucinations. A weird colorful line appeared on the horizon and I started hearing some of the best drum and bass I have ever heard (was not an existing song). Probably a flashback from my youth when I was in the scene.

All in all very interesting and I thought about buying a float tank at home (they cost 10-15k-ish). I was renting at the time however so it was not an option otherwise I would have definitely done it. It' on par or better than a massage for me when it comes to the aftereffects. The process itself is less enjoyable though than a massage.

Edit: one of the commenters asked about a bad experience. I was actually fairly scared to try it, although I have relatively extensive experience with meditation at the time I was suffering from pretty bad anxiety and I was afraid to both meditate or try float tanks in case it makes it worse. I can say it provided a short term (hours to days) noticeable calm, so it definitely did not make it worse. YMMV

friendly_chap··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
Wow! As someone who at some point in life was intensely meditating (nowadays less so) your routine reminds me of my habits, ie. falling asleep meditating vs praying etc, meditating upon waking up etc. Interesting how we can be so different yet similar!

friendly_chap··on Angular 13
> It's not life, it's your typical bike-shedding

It's typical because it's life and it happens often.

> In less dysfunctional organizations

Dysfunction is the norm.

I am arguing for opinionated tools in general, I'm not saying you can't make it without them.

Similarly I advise against lottery while not doubting you won at it.

friendly_chap··on Angular 13
It's life. It's one thing to call people amateurs from a sofa and an other to find yourself in 20 person team arguing about things.

The easy solution to arguments is having less things to argue about, similarly how Go solved formatting wars by an official format, Angular solves those fights by providing a default implementation.

friendly_chap··on Angular 13
This is exactly my experience. I also recently heard a story (from a close friend) of a rewrite to React where a good few months were spent on questions like which routing (or whatever) library to use, all things provided by Angular out of the box.

JSX mixing presentation and business logic also looks weird for someone who lived at a time when not doing MVC in PHP was a blasphemy and would not get you a respectable job.

Admittedly AngularJS was horrible but nowadays Angular offers me everything I need while I watch other people moving to Nextjs or whatever latest buzz frameworks for features Angular provides (like server side rendering).

Hungarian here: that is a remarkably close approximation. Almost perfect, except the vowel in "me" is longer than our short "i" which sounds just like the vowel in the word "in".
