freedude··on 3 Reasons a liberal arts degree helped me succeed in tech
While I agree with her conclusion from seeing the use of critical thinking techniques learned in other fields applied to tech, the application of using a Liberal Arts degree in a tech field will be messy. What would be better if tech related degrees focused on critical thinking skills. Right out of the gate these are useful with proper understanding of original sources. I have seen troubleshooting, data gathering and reporting skills learned in other industries and fields successfully applied to tech when the original sources were considered from the onset.

freedude··on Unpatched Powerful SSRF in Exchange OWA – Getting Response Through Attachments
TLDR;

ZDI-CAN-22101 – CreateAttachmentFromURI Server-Side Request Forgery

To sum up, the following attack scenario is possible:

• The attacker authenticates to OWA.

• The attacker creates a new draft message.

• The attacker invokes CreateAttachmentFromUri, triggering the SSRF.

• The response of the SSRF gets added to the mail message as an attachment.

• The attacker downloads the attachment and retrieves the response content.

Also why would the Oregon Secretary of State be looking for software to “identify and mitigate harmful information online as it relates to elections (misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information or MDM).”

Welcome to the police state where everything is fine because we control your thoughts...

Here is the RFP. https://www.northwestobserver.com/docs/misinformation-rfp.pd...

freedude··on Thielman vs. Fagan [pdf]
It seems like a low bar to prove Oregon's vote by mail elections are secure. Why does it require taking the Secretary of State to court? Furthermore it is being expedited due to upcoming elections and the merit of the evidence in the case. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals isn't a conservative court so.... The studies author is a very interesting guy you would do well to find out more about Dr. Didier Raoult.

When speaking of his family he described his Grandmother... “I don’t want to be ashamed to be less courageous. She was deported to Ravensbrück, my God,” he said. “It’s in my family. Sometimes you need to disobey because you think it’s not good to obey some things incompatible with your moral sense.”

freedude··on Outbound email issues to Outlook hosted email
We are seeing massive amounts of the following errors pile up in our mail queues.

"452 4.5.3 Too many recipients (AS780090)"

This happens even when there is only 2 or 3 recipients. I think there may be a network issue at MS hosted email.

freedude··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
In a free market-based economy all options are on the table. An entrepreneur (like Elon Musk) can invest in a technology and market it in such a way to capture some share of the market.

I would encourage these "oil executives" to find creative solutions. Diverse market options drive costs down and promote innovative products. To say one technology is always better than another because "some oil executive" does or doesn't promote it, is FUD. In tech we hear enough FUD we should be immune to it. We are not.

It is a proven fact enough electricity is not produced to handle the charging of enough BEVs to replace the current number of ICE vehicles. We need more options not fewer.

freedude··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
That fun fact may be true, but ask any firefighter that has had to put out a lithium based car fire how fun that fact is. The lithium based fires require 12-15 times the amount of water to extinguish.

They definitely fly better than a lead balloon (batteries).

freedude··on Where does my computer get the time from?
You are correct and I believe it was Kerberos that we were locked out of on this system since it was running a SMB share.
freedude··on Where does my computer get the time from?
This system operated an SMB share so Kerberos is probably what locked us out.

freedude··on Ask HN: Does your microwave interfere with Bluetooth? Mine does
The microwave became a second class citizen in our kitchen when we got the toaster oven/air fryer combo unit and then was relegated to the garage on top of the fridge. We still use it for popcorn and the occasional hot cocoa and if my coffee gets cold on the weekend I'll wander out there to warm it up. It is almost unneeded.

WiFi is better as a result.

freedude··on Where does my computer get the time from?
Just be careful which time source you use. One of our servers was configured to use tick.usno.navy.mil and tock.usno.navy.mil back 10-15 years ago or so. The Navy had an "issue" with the time they were sending out. The overnight result was several licensing servers wouldn't authenticate and we were locked out of those systems(SSH needs accurate time, within minutes I believe). We discovered the discrepancy by logging in locally (we were in the same building but a different office) and changed the time servers and then the sync method to resolve the issue.

freedude··on Why Did People Comply?
I think the Romans perfected (or attempted too) some years prior to the UK's Empire. And before that the Byzantines and the Babylonians. The UK's were the largest not because of lack of desire of the others but due to technological advances in communication and transportation.

freedude··on On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots: Can Language Models Be Too Big? [pdf]
"ENVIRONMENTAL AND FINANCIAL COST Strubell et al. recently benchmarked model training and develop- ment costs in terms of dollars and estimated CO2 emissions [129]. While the average human is responsible for an estimated 5t CO2 per year, the authors trained a Transformer (big) model [136] with neural architecture search and estimated that the training procedure emitted 284t of CO2. Training a single BERT base model (without hyperparameter tuning) on GPUs was estimated to require as much energy as a trans-American flight.""
