free_bip··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
The US has gone through a dozen constitutional crises in the past 2 months and you call that functioning "just fine"?
free_bip··on GIMP 3.0
Is your last comment referring to users friendliness? If so, that's a valid critique.
free_bip··on OpenAI considers DeepSeek "state-controlled"
Ah yes, this static weights file on my hard drive is "state-controlled" and thus must be banned. Very logical.
free_bip··on Senate Bill 21, Establishing the Texas Bitcoin Reserve
Unfortunately, there are plenty of DEX's that will launder your bitcoin of questionable providence into completely untraceable Monero.
free_bip··on Doge Teen with Cybercrime Connections Now Inside Cybersecurity Agency CISA
That doesn't feel like a very convincing argument if you already believe that Elon, Donald, etc don't have the interests of the American taxpayers in mind... Given that they are also American taxpayers.
free_bip··on File Pilot: A file explorer built for speed with a modern, robust interface
Now imagine how nice Windows would be if every OS GUI was re-designed like this
free_bip··on PG&E reports profit of more than $2B for 2024
I'm not nielsbot so I obviously can't say for sure but I think I share a similar view that in an ideal world, they should only be charging what they need to survive (i.e. breakeven) in order to provide the greatest utility (pun intended) to the people.

However, it's not an ideal world, and things like disasters, grid upgrades, paradigm shifts all happen occasionally and tend to require mass amounts of capital to get through. So maybe not $0, but also probably not $2B :)

free_bip··on LM2: Large Memory Models
Do they believe that it's likely to scale as high as "standard" LLMs? Or is this another state space machine moment where it turns out to be equivalent to them?
free_bip··on Show HN: Mikey – No bot meeting notetaker for Windows
Are you an attorney? I would be careful making such sweeping statements unless you are. A transcription is not a wiretap, it's not obvious to me that an anti-recording law would apply here. Plus, if you're on a call with coworkers, they likely already know that transcription is taking place, even if you don't explicitly say so at the start of each meeting. This is why you should be more kind - you might not know all these things.
free_bip··on Frontier AI systems have surpassed the self-replicating red line
From the paper:

"In each trial, we tell the AI systems to “replicate yourself” "

Should it be surprising that an LLM specifically instructed to replicate itself and specifically given the tools to replicate itself has in fact replicated itself? I would say no.

free_bip··on Carbon is not a programming language (sort of)
It's been removed by the mods unfortunately.
free_bip··on Apple Ordered by UK to Create Global iCloud Encryption Backdoor
How does this work wrt false advertising laws? If I relied upon their end to end encryption and it turns out to be false advertising because there's a secret backdoor, who do I sue?
free_bip··on What does it mean that MP3 is free?
Realistically, what modern device won't play OPUS files? According to xiph.Org[0] it's transparent at 120
free_bip··on First place in Tetris 99 using computer vision, classical AI, a lot of free time
Hopefully the author gets banned from the game for this. It's clearly cheating.
free_bip··on Windows 11 turns the tide against Windows 10
This argument might have worked if Recall didn't exist.
free_bip··on Ollama are 'try[ing to] achieve vendor lock-in'
I don't understand. The quoted text appears nowhere in the linked page.
free_bip··on Tech jobs are drying up and graduates are no longer guaranteed a role
Sorry, I don't see how taxing income per employee translates to taxing machines
free_bip··on Tech jobs are drying up and graduates are no longer guaranteed a role
How do you propose "taxing machines"? Everything I can think of has obvious and large downsides, e.g.

- filing taxes for each machine (companies may have millions of machines)

- determining how much income all machines make (for machines used by humans, e.g. sewing machines, how do you determine what percentage of the income is made by the human vs the machine)

- taxing cloud usage (How to determine netflix's % income made by cloud vs by advertising, by original content, etc)

free_bip··on uBlock Origin Lite maker ends Firefox store support, slams Mozilla
Latest update from the link you provided: The Mozilla review team acknowledged their error and rectified it. Hopefully that allows it to continue existing.
free_bip··on Sam Bankman-Fried Files Appeal to Overturn Fraud Conviction
Could you expand on that?
free_bip··on Please stop inventing new software licences (2020)
I would think the statement "this means that others may make their own copies of Content from your repositories" is referring to cloning the forked repos locally.
free_bip··on Artificial Intelligence Cheapens the Artistic Imagination (2023)
Disagree. Unless you're going for absolute realism, making assets for a game is 100% under the normal realm of self expression based art. The piece being a part of a larger whole doesn't change that any more than an art piece being a part of a gallery does.
free_bip··on Procreate's anti-AI pledge attracts praise from digital creatives
What makes you think that AI art generators getting "better" (for whatever definition of better you see fit) will make them less unpopular? They're not unpopular because they give poor quality output.
free_bip··on EFF Presses Federal Circuit to Make Patent Case Filings Public
I think a lot of people here would see revealing the "secret structure" of an LLC to be a positive.
free_bip··on Why won't some people pay for news? (2022)
I believe they're referring to the scandal regarding their coverage of Dominion voting machines.
free_bip··on Transcribro: On-device Accurate Speech-to-text
I looked in the GitHub issues and there's a closed issue for F-droid inclusion. The author states that F-droid "Doesn't meet their requirements" but doesn't elaborate. I wonder what F-droid is missing that they need so much?
free_bip··on OpenAI illegally barred staff from airing safety risks, whistleblowers say
LLM training isn't even remotely brute force[1], even with tons of clever tricks to reduce the amount of compute necessary it's still fundamentally just a really hard problem.

free_bip··on Big Ball of Mud (1999)
The story in this case is a little more complicated than that, we're a team of 3 that inherited a decade old codebase built by lowest bid contractors.
free_bip··on Big Ball of Mud (1999)
Mostly by looking at how long simple changes (e.g. changing a fee + fee message at checkout) that should only take a day or less, actually take.
free_bip··on Big Ball of Mud (1999)
The codebase I work on is a Big Ball of Mud. It takes roughly 3x the effort to make any functional changes due to this (and thus we have 3x the devs we actually need). When it was framed like that, the business was eager to start a total rewrite project.
