freeAgent··on Chrome again exempts Google from user site data settings
Why would that cause only Google’s info to be preserved across sessions, though? Somewhere, Google are privileging their own data and preventing it from being deleted when other data are deleted and the browser is configured so everything should be gone.
freeAgent··on Tracking down the 16-year-old WAL-reset SQLite bug
Yeah, I have my Tailscale tied to my Apple account, which just feels weird. I can add a Passkey account to my Tailnet and make it manager, etc., so that’s what I’ve done. The owner is my Apple account, but I actually do everything admin-wise with a Passkey account.
freeAgent··on John C. Dvorak has died
That’s very sad. I enjoyed his contributions to PC Mag and TWiT.
freeAgent··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them
They are disabling PS3 store access, and if I remember correctly, you could purchase digital games on the PS3.
freeAgent··on Microsoft new Outlook takes 10 seconds to do what Outlook Classic does instantly
I cannot believe how ridiculously heavy this stuff is. On my corporate laptop with a modern i7 and 32GB RAM (running Windows plus Crowdstrike, Zscaler, and probably some other junk), it feels like I’m on a netbook. It’s awful.
freeAgent··on Fox to buy Roku
Ironically, I think the Apple TV is the best streaming box out there. Apple is both the manufacturer and a streamer in their own right. And they definitely privilege their own store and streaming over other services. However, everything else already sucks so much with UIs full of ads that Apple wins anyway. It’s awful.

freeAgent··on Period tracking app, Flo, found to be selling user data to Meta
If you stop having a period for a few months and then start again, it may be worth buying some location data during that time to see if you were near any medical offices that may have offered illegal abortion services.
freeAgent··on Tesla tells HW3 owner to 'be patient' after 7 years of waiting for FSD
He should have been touching the wheel. Tesla nags you if you don't exert varying force on the wheel, so it's not possible for him to not touch the wheel during the trip unless he was using some sort of defeat device.
freeAgent··on Microsoft suspends dev accounts for high-profile open source projects
Apple requires notorization for applications outside their store too.
freeAgent··on OkCupid gave 3M dating-app photos to facial recognition firm, FTC says
This sort of stuff continues to ramp up as everyone rushes to train LLMs while governments are pushing for ID verification that would make it impossible to use the web (or even one's own computer) anonymously. It's a very dark time for anyone who cares whatsoever about privacy or digital sovereignty.
freeAgent··on Car Seats as Contraception
Traveling with kids in car seats via any method other than one’s own vehicle is almost not worth the hassle. I always rent a car and car seat on the other end, or purchase a car seat for family to put in their car for us. I’ve also purchased strollers to stash with the same family. I’d rather buy all this than lug it through airports for “free.”
freeAgent··on LinkedIn uses 2.4 GB RAM across two tabs
It depends on your role. People in sales have it open all the time since it's a legitimate research tool for them.
freeAgent··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 6.19
They never got Office or any Adobe (or similar) apps working, which is a huge miss.
freeAgent··on Asahi Linux Progress Report: Linux 6.19
I’m sad because the WiFi on my M1 MBA is dying/dead and there’s no way to replace it without swapping the whole “logic board.” Apple also doesn’t support any USB WiFi adapters in recent versions of MacOS, so it’s now tethered to a wired network connection. I’m just waiting for the M5 refresh to hit at this point. Anyway, all that’s to say that at least some M1 hardware is going to to the trash heap soon :(
freeAgent··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I've noticed this as well and it's infuriating. It's extremely unintuitive and I constantly find myself missing the resize zone.
freeAgent··on Honey's Dieselgate: Detecting and tricking testers
See Spyware: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware

"Programs designed to monitor users' web browsing, display unsolicited advertisements, *or redirect affiliate marketing revenues* are called spyware."

freeAgent··on What Happened to Abit Motherboards
The DFI LanParty UT Ultra-D (Socket A) is my favorite motherboard of all time. It was basically purpose built for overclocking. I got to a stable 250Mhz (500Mhz DDR) on that board and ran it stable like that for years, though I did put an active heatsink/cooler on the northbridge.
freeAgent··on Honey's Dieselgate: Detecting and tricking testers
It actually does fall under the definition malware. Specifically, Honey hijacks affiliate marketing tags and replaces them with their own. This falls under the definition of the “spyware” category of malware.
freeAgent··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to donate to Firefox development. Donations to Mozilla expressly do not got to pay for Firefox since Firefox is for-profit and they’ve decided to not accept money from users. So I guess we are already “the product.”
freeAgent··on Affinity Studio now free
It would be great to patch the v2 apps into an "offline mode." Then you don't have to worry about maintaining the license servers.
freeAgent··on Apple M5 chip
The original M1 was released in base form before Pro/Max/Ultra variants. I think that pattern may have repeated for M2, but I'm not sure.
freeAgent··on Apple M5 chip
I have a Samsung QD-OLED monitor from 2023 which has very noticeable burn-in at low brightness levels. This is from the era of "OLED burn-in has been solved," and it's soured me on OLED monitors since I do photography as a hobby and don't want burn-in affecting how I see images on my screen. I think it's fine for televisions, but I don't like it for PC use where I have static windows on my screen for a long time. I even used dark mode and still got burn-in pretty quickly, for example where it draws the border between side-by-side windows (so, a vertical line down the middle of my screen). Once I noticed that, I started resizing my side-by-side windows so their border isn't in the same place every day, but the damage is done.
freeAgent··on Apple M5 chip
QA then was taken pretty seriously because, unlike today, they could not just issue a patch over the internet and expect their users to find, download, and install it. Much of the '90s was pre-internet era for many people, and it was certainly before today's world of having auto-updating apps, good search engines, etc.
freeAgent··on California enacts law enabling people to universally opt out of data sharing
Yeah, it's crazy that when you register to vote, the DMV turns around and sells that contact information on to any political campaign/operation that wants to pay for it.
freeAgent··on Apple pulls iPhone torrent app from AltStore PAL in Europe
My thoughts exactly. This is what Google have promised to implement starting next year.
freeAgent··on Apple pulls iPhone torrent app from AltStore PAL in Europe
I guess we can look forward to similar moves by Google after they require dev registration in order to distribute apps to Android devices.
freeAgent··on Windows 7 x64 Extended Support Page
You don’t even really have a legitimate reason to hope for those things at this point. It’s just a matter of how much worse MS are going to make it.
freeAgent··on We caught companies making it harder to delete your personal data online
AI tools tend to ignore noindex, etc. when scraping training data, so finding data removal request forms may be a great use case for AI!
freeAgent··on How to Firefox
It is literally in beta, so it feeling like a beta product isn’t surprising. It does work with the extensions I need and it’s my primary browser on iOS, but I still find it too buggy and crash-prone on the desktop. That seems to be improving, but it’s not convinced me that it’s reliable enough yet.
