fredophile··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
I believe that was their last tweet before being banned. Do you have a more likely tweet for causing the ban?
fredophile··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
There are multiple issues here and people can be upset about some while not being upset about all of them. Musk specifically Saif he would not ban the account that reports on his jets location. He then changed his mind and the account was banned. Journalists reported the ban and were themselves banned for their reporting.

Personally, while I think banning the jet location account is hypocritical I don't have a serious problem with it. I do have a problem with banning journalists reporting on the ban.

fredophile··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
You're asking for evidence that they didn't tweet something? It isn't our job to prove a negative. Just take a look at their tweets and show me the ones where they DID report on the location of the jet. Can't find them? Neither can Elon Musk? That's odd, maybe they never existed after all.
fredophile··on The Coming Game Engine Inflection Point
> One bad recession and that AAA piece of proprietary software you've built a whole game on could go under.

If you're using Unreal you already have the full source for that proprietary software. If Epic went under tomorrow it wouldn't stop people from finishing in progress games that are built on Unreal.

> OS is slow by design

Really? Game engines are a moving target. You're telling me that slow development times for new engine features are a benefit?

fredophile··on What if your entire worldview was just because of near-zero interest rates?
I wasn't arguing against buybacks. I was just giving some reasons buybacks are more popular with some companies than dividends are.
fredophile··on What if your entire worldview was just because of near-zero interest rates?
There are a few reasons some companies prefer buybacks over dividends.

Probably the smallest reason is that buybacks can save investors money on their taxes.

A much bigger reason is that buybacks are viewed as one time events. When a company starts paying a dividend investors often expect that dividend to be paid regularly. If the company chooses to stop paying a dividend or decreases the dividend the share price drops.

Finally, there is executive compensation. Let's say my compensation package let's me buy shares at $100 each. If the share price is currently $110 and the company does a $10 dividend then the share price goes to $100 and my options are worthless. If the company does a stock buyback then the share price goes up and my options are worth more. As CEO which do you push for?

fredophile··on Latest Tech Layoff Trends in Three Charts
Two things jumped out at me:

1) this seems like a stealth ad for the company that made the tools to gather the data

2) does anyone consider Juul a tech company?

fredophile··on Russia’s apparent resilience is being kept up by policy tricks and cash
What parts of the Minsk agreements not being fulfilled led to Russia invading and who should be pressured to fulfill them? Since Russia claims they are not bound by the Minsk agreements why would there not being fulfilled lead to the current invasion? Should the current Russian government be trusted to keep their end of any deal involving Ukraine given their blatant breaking of the Budapest memorandum and the Russian-Ukraine Friendship Treaty?
fredophile··on Stripe’s real pricing: a primer
As a consumer in the US I always pay with a credit card when I can. The businesses have already baked the credit card fees into their pricing so I might as well get a few percent back from my card plus the extra purchase protection, etc.
fredophile··on Why is Booz Allen renting us back our own national parks?
The article isn't against the lottery fee. It's against BAH making more money on the lottery fee than the park ends up making from the people who win the lottery.
fredophile··on How to sell tickets fairly
Some artists and promoters are already doing a money grab and hiding behind scalpers to do it. For big shows, a portion of the tickets may be removed from retail sales entirely and go straight to websites that are used for scalping tickets [0]. This let's artists be seen as offering tickets at reasonable rates while getting closer to market rates.

fredophile··on CRISPR cancer trial success paves the way for personalized treatments
There are companies doing research in applying CAR-T for treating animals. This has a much easier approval process since it is run through USDA and not FDA. I'd expect to see faster advancements in treatment and lowering costs and then having this tech brought over to humans later.
fredophile··on Twitter Now Asks Some Fired Workers to Please Come Back
> Twitter is losing money

Most of Twitter's current losses are the interested payment on Musk's leveraged buyout.

> Eventbrite cut 50% during covid btw

I'm shocked that a company whose business plan revolves around groups of people meeting in person had financial trouble during the pandemic.

fredophile··on Negative 2000 Lines of Code (1982)
On the balance sheet I'd call functionality an asset and code a liability. Everything else bring equal more code is more to maintain as things change, search through for bugs, etc.
fredophile··on Sugar Substitutes Surprise
After you vote you have a new option. If you upvoted the option says "unvote". If you downvoted it says "undown". Just check the text after you vote to make sure you didn't fat finger it.
fredophile··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
How does this delay GAAP profitability? They paid out 3.5 months severance and their full 2022 bonuses. If they hadn't laid these people off then in the next 3 months (1 quarter) they would have paid them 3 months salary and their full 2022 bonuses.
fredophile··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
If you're getting rid of 14% of your staff I expect you to be making a lot fewer hires and having less output, as a result of having less employees, is also not surprising. Those are completely unrelated to the severance they pay their employees.

The general argument for high CEO pay is that it is a reward for their skill in the job. By that argument, if there is evidence that they're making mistakes that negatively impact the company shouldn't that directly impact them in terms of their compensation?

fredophile··on Stripe laying off around 14% of workforce
This is better than standard in the US but I'm not sure I'd be happy if I was one of the laid off employees.

That 3.5 months and healthcare buys them some time to start interviewing and line up new work. However, they're competing with everyone else that's been laid off recently. There's another article on HN right now about Lyft laying off staff. Meta is getting pummeled in the stock market right now and Google has recently had hiring freezes. I'm not sure now is a good time to be looking for tech work in SF.

Unused PTO should be paid out. That was already earned by the employees.

Accelerated vesting is only good if you can afford to use it. How long do they have to exercise their options? What's the secondary market like right now for Stripe stock? Are they allowed to sell stock currently or required to hold it? In a worst case scenario, people could be unable to exercise their options because they don't have the savings to cover the tax bill and want to hold onto cash because they're unemployed and need the liquidity.

As for healthcare benefits, that's a result of a very broken system in the US and not something that should be celebrated.

fredophile··on How food powers the body's metabolism
I don't think you'll find anyone suggesting that DNP is a good idea for weight maintenance or improved health. However, it will definitely help with short term weight loss if it doesn't kill you.
fredophile··on How food powers the body's metabolism
Fructose in unprocessed foods like fruit isn't a problem. Show me a morbidly obese person who got that way from eating too much fruit.

While you don't require carbs to survive that doesn't mean they're harmful or should be completely cut out from your diet.

fredophile··on Meta Quest Pro
> > They did absolutely monstrous shit in regards to privacy, that makes the meta of today look like a finely tuned privacy machine that serves to protect every user to the teeth. > How in the world did you come to that conclusion? Any Meta app you have on your smartphone is doing what they can to collect heuristics in order to identify you and serve you Ads. How is that any different? It's just not as obvious.

In the early days of Facebook there was a negative article about them in Harvard's student newspaper. Mark Zuckerberg looked for through the logs for login attempts from student journalists at the paper and used the passwords they entered to try to gain access to their email accounts.[0] I'd say that is significantly worse from a privacy perspective than using cookies to show you more relevant ads.

fredophile··on Time-restricted eating reduces visceral fat and improves metabolic syndrome
Efficiency isn't the only factor. I'd say the most important factor is enjoyment. We each have a finite amount of willpower. If you're using it up on exercise you hate doing eventually you're going to hit a day where you don't have much willpower, skip the exercise and break the routine.

The most time efficient exercises I know aren't ones you can sustain for longer periods of time. I can consistently walk for hours but only run sprint intervals for a few minutes. Sure every minute of sprinting burns more than a minute of walking but if I can walk significantly longer than I can sprint it will probably lead to a higher total calorie burn.

fredophile··on Tim Cook is latest CEO to question the metaverse
His argument is pretty poor. The fact that the average person couldn't define the metaverse doesn't mean they wouldn't enjoy it when it is offered. The average person couldn't define a model T before Ford started building them. He also seems to fall into the same VR/AR trap that Meta is in. I'd call VR/AR one potential why to interact with the metaverse but not a defining characteristic.

My personal view is that the metaverse will come and it will be an evolution from a popular game such as Roblox, Minecraft or Fortnite.

fredophile··on Daily 'Breath Training' can work as well as Meds to reduce high blood pressure
Yes. It's called white coat syndrome.
fredophile··on What would a “good” WebMD look like?
> it's orthogonal to relevance of content

I disagree. The way content is presented matters. Splitting an article into 4-6 pages and filling those pages with ads makes me not want to read that content. I'd much rather go somewhere that has the same text in a single page and only a few ads.

fredophile··on On tea and the art of doing nothing
It's true. I drank some vodka and had no trouble falling asleep right away.
fredophile··on Ask HN: How much info should founders share with early stage employees?
In my experience, people that actively don't want full info are usually not the same people who are interested in being early employees at a startup.
fredophile··on 13 Months: The Kodak Calendar Experiment

> When Apple made tracking opt-in, pretty much everyone refused. I think that's a clear indicator that the overwhelming majority do want privacy, and if they're actually given a choice, most will probably take it.

I've seen this or equivalent statements a lot in discussion related to privacy, tracking, and the ios ecosystem. However, I don't think the results show what you're saying they do. All I see is that people accept the default behaviour of their devices. Unfortunately, there's no mobile ecosystem where you can easily opt out of tracking to compare to.

fredophile··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
> 17. lmk when it's ergo (cries in carpal tunnel)

I haven't received it yet but a while ago I backed a split mechanical keyboard on kickstarter that I hope will be good for this. If you want to check it out its the keyboardio model 100.
