frazbin··on Coffee drinking linked to lower mortality risk, new study finds
yeah but just from mechanisms.. small organic solvent molecules aren't like, a promising target for antiaging treatments.. most solvents are bad for you, for obvious reasons, that is, they interfere with cellular chemistry and they have to be metabolized by the liver in large quantities. seems ridiculous to think alcohol would have any positive effects-- as a drug, it's just so shitty. I mean, you have to take 20g+ to get a physiological effect. The whole experience of having it in your system is dominated by the processes trying to get it /out/ of your system!

Folks who drink alcohol should consider taking safer and more powerful drugs.

frazbin··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
correct! Here's why: Kubernetes is an operating system (a workload/IO manager) and its lineage is 16 years old. So it's like Unix around 1979, or Windows/DOS around ~1996. Imagine it's 1996 and you can pick between Windows NT (representing 16 years of MS development) or System 360 (~40 years out from IBMs first transistorized designs).

What I'm trying to say is that as an operating system, Kubernetes is now a young adult, and historically speaking, operating systems at this level of maturity have been adopted and ridden for decades, with much success. But, ya know, if you chose OS/360 in 1996 you would have a point.

frazbin··on The peculiar problem of sterilizing cooked red meat
So green eggs and ham is overcooked eggs and irradiated ham. TIL!
frazbin··on Ask HN: What were your teachers like?
Yeah that's okay. Some of the job is getting students excited and inspired so they know why they're studying. Admittedly a weak-minded western concept but it does work after its fashion (source: many of my teachers were kind, intelligent professionals who were good at their job)

thanks for this
frazbin··on Python Language Summit: Python Without the GIL
worker threads don't share the parent's heap though, right? They can only share state through a binary channel. It's something, but pretty different from traditional pthreads.
frazbin··on Critique of Techno-Feudal Reason
This surprises no one. It's the whole reason statecraft is worthwhile (cause feudalism and being beholden to the local boss sucks).
frazbin··on JavaScript Containers
The event loop is the original sin of node.js.. I feel like you either fight the broken concurrency model at every step, or you slip beneath the waves. The fact that languages like erlang have been around forever makes it a real slap in the face.

frazbin··on Heresy
This is a crappy hot take. Monetary and labor contributions to religious endeavors are way down and have been for a while. I understand the desire to call any strongly held organized belief 'religion' but you're misrepresenting most of human history when you do so.

frazbin··on How L.A. Got Hooked on Adderall
I'm told that microdosing Adderall isn't a bad idea-- just take between 5 and 20 of the little balls in there. Amphetamine's effects are super non linear, and this cuts the side effects.
frazbin··on Investigating musical genius by listening to the Beach Boys a lot
I get that sounding like a big greasy blob is great for AM radio as you cruise PCH, but these days it feels like kinda gimmicky.
frazbin··on Invasion Failing Because Russian Intel Embezzled Billions Intended for Bribes?
Hmm dunno but if there's no such case, it's a point in favor of democracy.. Dictators aren't subject to election cycles.
frazbin··on Invasion Failing Because Russian Intel Embezzled Billions Intended for Bribes?
it is of course possible to be both evil and incompetent.. sometimes history turns on this exact happenstance.
frazbin··on Invasion Failing Because Russian Intel Embezzled Billions Intended for Bribes?
Mayybe. I certainly would have agreed with you a month ago. But it's a very plausible story, don't you think? If we allow ourselves to believe for a moment that Putin isn't a brilliant dictator genius playing 4d chess, and just think of him as a dictator. I bet he believes FSB intel over the western press.. there's such a strong bias to believe information that you've paid for, and to trust people in your employ.. and after all he paid them /so much/ money.

It's possible he's in a situation where he literally cannot buy honesty, and has no good substitute for it, so he just has to believe lies and make mistakes. How many lies and at what levels? I dunno.. but how would he know either? I think we take professionals being trustworthy for granted in the US, but really that property depends on incentives being aligned just right. I mean, look at the FBI's vetting process and its emphasis on financial entaglements- I think it's like that for a reason.

I could see that but only if the bio might be read by paying customers of your company. Internally, encouraging people to use their and your time more productively seems like a good idea.. excessive deference in the workplace is communication blocker.

frazbin··on Should Apple Continue to Ban Rival Browser Engines on iOS?
from the article:

"If Apple stops mandating the use of WebKit on iOS and iPadOS, the developers behind the mobile versions of browsers like Chrome and Edge could switch to Chromium like their desktop counterparts, enabling Chromium to obtain even larger overall market share and potentially limit the chances of rival technologies competing with it."

oops they said the quiet part out loud

well like one example would be if the author's study is predicated on the notion that salaries are optimally allocated, but you suspect that the hidden term representing misallocation of labor is actually quite large. In other words, you have to consider the possibility that degrees are not a perfectly honest signal, and that people are not always paid exactly according to their productivity.

You only have to have one flagrantly unprovable assumption to make the whole chain of inference invalid
