fratlas··on Why some clothes shrink in the wash and how to unshrink them
Nudies jeans are worth the premium (ish) price, and have lifetime free repairs. Extremely comfortable too. Going on 5 years in my current pair
fratlas··on Getty Images and Shutterstock to Merge
Pexels is still very free, and seems to be high quality.
fratlas··on Google's Results Are Infested, Open AI Is Using Their Playbook from the 2000s
People want to spend less time on a task. Whichever tool succeeds at this will win.

just use a canva template
fratlas··on Apple acquires Pixelmator
Canva left the buy once affinity model untouched, and are an ethical company.
fratlas··on Tell HN: Vimeo's free trial is predatory
They're a desperate company on the decline
fratlas··on Figma Slides
Try Canva whiteboards. You can embed an inf canvas into slides
fratlas··on Engineer's solar panels are breaking efficiency records
True, but consider grid electricity prices increasing over those decades too.
fratlas··on Ask HN: Shift in the job market here to stay?
I don't think that prevents people from bootstrapping a great product
fratlas··on Ask HN: Shift in the job market here to stay?
I mean, TikTok and ChatGPT came up extremely quickly. BeReal grew rapidly. People can and still do build disruptive software.
fratlas··on Show HN: ChatGPT Plugin that semantically searches Google Maps
This is so underrated. There's a huge need for a better Yelp
fratlas··on Apartment rents fall as new supply hits market
Not true as of late - there is a construction slowdown, so even lower grade houses in rural areas with no services are going for unattainable prices. 700k for Albury is insane. We have a supply issue.
fratlas··on NopeCHA: Captcha Solver
Maybe the solution is to look for problems where human's imperfections are identifiable
fratlas··on Wells Fargo mortgage staff brace for layoffs as U.S. loan volumes collapse
> you lost out on a literal once in a lifetime opportunity

I don't think anyone can make claims like this, lots of people made the right decision by not buying into an inflated market with job instability around the corner. I think the correction is needed, any people who didn't overextend will be fine if they intend to stay put for 5-15 years.

fratlas··on Canada bans foreign home buyers for two years
In my experience it was less emotional than in person auctions I've attended. I knew my limit and stuck to it, there was no agent talking me into bidding higher.
fratlas··on Canada bans foreign home buyers for two years
There are new systems to bid online, and over the course of a week. Much less stressful, no emotion and heat of the moment bidding. Nothing wrong with open bidding, all about the techniques used in person.
fratlas··on Canada bans foreign home buyers for two years
A designed process, very efficient at extracting the maximum price out of a stressful situation. It's a sad state of affairs in Australia right now.
fratlas··on Ask HN: Who here has been successful buying a small business or tiny project?
Would you be comfortable doing an intro? Looking for this exact skillset for an ambitious project
fratlas··on How Facebook encodes videos
Yes, the x264 params are all useful. It's selecting the optimal combination for a given use case that presents a challenge. Vimeo's video quality (and therefore filesize) is much higher than FBs, because their use cases are completely different.
fratlas··on How Facebook encodes videos
I spent about 1-2 years on this, built a ML model. Pretty deep problem, there's no clear winner in terms of OSS software to do this.
fratlas··on Ask HN: What was the biggest contributor to your happiness in the past year?
How'd you convince someone to let you?
fratlas··on Ask HN: What does software development in Australia look like?
Small, but some growing/large tech companies. Canva, and SafetyCulture are probably the highest growth, Atlassian is already public and doing very well. Google has a Sydney office, Uber has some engineers scattered around.

Hopefully the government realizes they need to incentive tech workers with company share tax schemes, and startup tax cuts.

I know a few roles going in some of these companies; Python, Java, JS, Infra. Reply with an email address and I'll send through some contacts.

fratlas··on Ask HN: I have $450K cash, what should I do to maximize my return?
Is this not timing the market? How do you calculate what is "high" and "low" - rolling average increasing 7% per year, compare current price to that expectation?
fratlas··on Ask HN: What seeds you sowed years ago that you are reaping fruits of now?
What made you do it?
fratlas··on Drive through cities in the browser while listening to local radio stations
And a variable fan depending on your speed? :P
fratlas··on How a lazy bitch like me learned to be productive
Like all things in life, it's about balance so you don't become accustomed. Can't wait for the day I only have to cook when I want to; because automated, healthy, home-cooked meals are possible.
fratlas··on It’s Time to Build

  brain-computer interface
This one actually is being worked on, and it's a very hard problem. Great high level article of where we're at https://waitbutwhy.com/2017/04/neuralink.html
fratlas··on Watch Zoox’s autonomous car drive around San Francisco for an hour
I imagine self driving cars won't be outside of cities for years and years.
