frankacter··on Nvidia and its partners built a system to bypass U.S. export restrictions
>I think the TSMC restrictions on China is really bad for Taiwan in the next few years. First, it’s a huge revenue loss for Taiwan.

TSMC sells more than it is capable of producing. This will likely continue to be a limiter for the foreseeable future. No revenue is being lost as a result of limiting export to China.

>Second, it creates a scenario in which China would take military action on Taiwan if they fall behind too far in AI due to the lack of the most advanced chips.

China's interest in Taiwan existed long before TSMC, it is ideological, not economical.

>If I’m a Taiwan citizen, I would clamor for the government to negotiate with the US and Chinese government to allow Chinese companies to use TSMC fabs. It’s one sure way to delay military action.

I am a Taiwan citizen and the majority of us don't want this, evident by the results of our recent election. That said, see prior point.

Worth noting that Gemini also offers a URL shortcut for searching Gemini via @gemini within the Chrome browser.

frankacter··on Putin Reportedly Asked Elon Musk Not to Activate Starlink over Taiwan
This doesn't line up with the facts of what has been known prior.

Taiwan law requires foreign communication providers to be a joint partnership with the Taiwan entity controlling majority stake. This was a deal breaker with StarLink and the talks fell apart.

>Taipei has been exploring ways to acquire satellite internet technology since 2018, including in talks with SpaceX. But Mr. Musk balked at a requirement that any foreign entity involved in communications infrastructure be a joint venture with a local partner that would hold a majority stake. Mr. Musk considered this “totally unacceptable,”

frankacter··on Apple Watch sleep apnea detection gets FDA approval
>Can't wait to get this in more devices.

Samsung received FDA approval back in February:

https://aasm.org/samsung-galaxy-watch-sleep-apnea-feature-re...

It works on a different monitoring method and requires 2 sleep cycles over 4 hours each in a 10 day window to start detecting.

>The feature, a software-only mobile medical app, uses smartwatch built-in sensors to monitor the user’s sleep for significant breathing disruptions associated with OSA. Users may track their sleep twice for more than four hours within a 10-day period to utilize the feature.

frankacter··on Ask HN: What have you built with LLMs?
It's not clear from the description, what level access does this plugin have? One of your examples is "my server is running slow", does it have the ability to view the configuration or run tests or corrections or just provide troubleshooting steps? Another example is reading over Yoast SEO reports, can it implement changes suggested?

I wasn't sure if this is a "we've indexed general troubleshooting and documentation and provide you a chatbot that understands Wordpress", or if this was doing more heavy lifting.

frankacter··on Show HN: Collects real problems from SM so we can stop solving imaginary problem
It may be useful to provide a sample newsletter as part of the FAQ to help others to get a feel for what to expect.

I have a question to that regard, are you just surfacing the "problem statement" in the newsletter or are you transparently providing the links to the SM sites that they were scraped from?

frankacter··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
>most people know OpenAI as the company that steals things from other people.

That is already the perception of AI in general, especially evident if you reflect back on the Github Copilot launch.

People move on as the usefulness of the next shiny thing fills the void of time.

frankacter··on OpenAI didn’t copy Scarlett Johansson’s voice for ChatGPT, records show
It's not an impersonation it is the actor using their own natural voice.

"We believe that AI voices should not deliberately mimic a celebrity's distinctive voice — Sky's voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using *her own natural speaking voice*"

frankacter··on Sam Altman is showing us who he really is
>Washington Post article. And what you think the substance of your comment was is unclear.

You mean this?

"Each of the personas has a different tone and accent. “Sky” sounds somewhat similar to Scarlett Johansson, the actor who voiced the AI that Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls in love with in the movie “Her.” Deng, the OpenAI executive, said the voice personas were not meant to sound like any specific person."

As I stated prior, and thank you for making my point, despite being publicly available for near a year, there was minor mention of similarities with no general public sentiment.

>Altman hyped the May update with references to Her

If by "hype" you mean throwaway comments on social media that general population was unaware.

Drawing a parallel to a calming persona of an always on life assistant from pop culture in a few throwaway social media posts from personal accounts such as "Hope Everyone's Ready" isn't hyping it as Her any more than Anthropic is selling their offerings as a Star Trek communicator despite a few comments they've made on social media.

Ambiguous "some people" overstates any perceived concern and "most people don't use ChatGPT" understates how present they've been on the news.

Mobile app, which heavily emphasized voice and has "Sky" as it's default voice The ChatGPT mobile application had over 110+ million downloads across iOS and Android platforms before the May announcement.

In regards to the November announcement, yes, voice was very prominent in it with Sky as the default language. (https://youtu.be/pq34V_V5j18?si=66lEWxgteBbtKifl)

While you're right I should have chosen my words more carefully, a random reddit post with 68 upvotes doesn't really dispute the substance of my comment.

OpenAI has been plastered across the news cycles for the last year, most of that time with Sky as the default voice. There was no discernable upheaval or ire in the public space suggesting the similarities of the voice in any meaningful public manner until this complaint was made.

>Yes, but literally no one anywhere is suggesting that the voice actress used would be banned from work because of any similarity between her voice and Johansson's; that’s an irrelevant strawman

It's not. The original comment in this chain was drawing parallel to a lawsuit in which someone intentionally took steps to impersonate an actor.

This situation is a voice actor using their "natural voice" as a source of work.

If a lawsuit barring OpenAI from using this voice actor is successful, due to similarities to a more famous actor, that puts this voice actor's future potential at risk for companies actively wanting to avoid potential for litigation.

Suggesting a calming female persona as a real time always present life assistant draws parallel to a movie about a calming female persona that is a real time always present life assistant is not a smoking gun of impropriety.

Pursuing a more famous name to attach to marketing is certainly worth paying a premium over a lesser known voice actor and again is not a smoking gun.

Sky voice has been around for a very long time in the OpenAI app dating back to early 2023. No one was drawing similarities or crying foul and decrying how it "sounds just like Scarlett" ..

frankacter··on Sam Altman is showing us who he really is
Speaking with your natural voice is not impersonating.
frankacter··on Sam Altman is showing us who he really is
While not defending OpenAI or Altman, the caveat here is that this was a voice actor using their natural voice, not an actor impersonating scarlett johansson.

Setting a precedent that if your natural voice sounds similar to a more famous actor precludes you from work would be a terrible precedent to set.

frankacter··on Google Fit dev APIs shutdown set, fate of Android, Wear OS apps go unannounced
>I bought a Wifi scale specifically so I don't have to have my phone with bluetooth on, nearby.

Our has that option, but as multiple people in the house used the scale, having a phone on hand (which we do anyway) streamlines the process versus having to identify the user weighing.. user preference really.

>Does the BT-connection open the app itself, or just initiate a sync in a background service?

Background service as best as I can tell. I rarely, if ever, open the app in foreground and the weight is captured.

frankacter··on Google Fit dev APIs shutdown set, fate of Android, Wear OS apps go unannounced
>E.g. my Withings scale writes my body weight to Google Health Connect. But I need to open the Withings app every time for that to work. The app-developers cannot do this in the background afaik. (The data flow is: scale -> cloud -> app -> Google Health Connect.)

I have a Renpho scale, the way it works for me is that when I step on the scale it turns it on and connects to my device via bluetooth which wakes the app. The weight is captured and synced in the background to both the Renpho cloud service as well as the local Health Connect.

>There is no incentive for app developers to write data to Google Health Connect.

Again this is currently an app by app basis, they get a lot of write storage to health connect for free from the API:

https://developer.android.com/health-and-fitness/guides/heal...

> Even if you subscribe to the idea of using it as your data-store, you will lose access to the data if a user uninstalls your app. It's only possible to read data up to 3 month in the past, or however long the user has installed your app – hopefully they don't decide to reinstall it.

As I understand it the access is 30 days prior to the first permission given.

" Health Connect allows your app to read records with time or startTime for up to 30 days before your app's first successful permission request. If your app is uninstalled and then re-installed, the date is reset which marks as your new starting date as if you use the app for the first time. There are no restrictions on the data you share with Health Connect, however avoid writing large amounts of historical data at this time. Similarly, avoid writing data associated with future events such as a predicted"

https://developer.android.com/health-and-fitness/guides/heal...

If they uninstall and reinstall that time is reset as the permission date is adjusted.

frankacter··on Google Fit dev APIs shutdown set, fate of Android, Wear OS apps go unannounced
This is a bit sensationalistic of a headline as Google had already previously paved the path to transition from Google Fit to the Health Connect platform, the centralized hub for all health data. It's more secure and allows a wider more diverse suite of apps to integrate into it.

From the article:

>While we’ve deprecated the Google Fit Android API, we’re aiming to turn down the API no sooner than June 30, 2025. This is to give users enough time to switch to Health Connect and continue their service.

Specifically they indicate, as they have in the past, that developers should transition from the Google Fit API to the Health Connect API. The Google Fit app already uses the Health Connect API itself to upload health data to a centralized repository.

The article also mentions no "big updates" since 2022, while I can't gauge what they're qualifying as "big", there have been 20+ app updates since that time frame and there is a major beta release ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.and... ) that has been in public testing for some time now.

frankacter··on Apple must open iPadOS to sideloading within 6 months, EU says
