frandroid··on Apple Silicon: The Passing of Wintel
> If Apple et. al. wanted to pay 'American wages' for most of that activity, then major clusters of those skills would develop here.

They would, but you're still talking about a 10-20 year gap. First for masses of people to get the adequate education, apprenticeships, get good at their jobs, and then for these people to mentor the second cohort 8-12 years later to get the kind of volume China and Germany have.

frandroid··on Circle of Competence: Avoid Ambiguity Traps
> "mixed fractions"

I strongly disagree. Being able to bring two quotients to the same denominator, so that you can compare apples and oranges on the fruit scale, is a essential skill at not getting screwed by The Man. This is a core life numeracy skill.

frandroid··on Ford employees ask the company to stop making police cars
It's not that black people believe every single cop is bad, it's that they MUST assume that a cop can do bad things to them. America is truly a police state for Black people. It doesn't matter if 90% of cops are good, if 10% can get away with brutalizing you and worse, all cops are suspect.

It's the old dilemma: There's 1% chance this beer can kill you: Do you want to try your chance and drink it? Of course not. But you can't not interact with the police. Just being black is enough to get bad cops' negative attention.

Damn.

frandroid··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
The style is very reminiscent from The Register's BOFH line of stories (though without the mischieviousness)--now those are mostly fiction, but they're amusing nonetheless...
frandroid··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
One of the most endearing xkcd strips. A bit lightbulb moment when I figured this out in my life.
frandroid··on We can't send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Since the story has been posted umpteenth times, this is what should be posted these days. Very entertaining, thanks!
frandroid··on How Developers Stop Learning: Rise of the Expert Beginner (2012)
That's what you call a self-solving problem. You don't want to work for these companies. :)
frandroid··on A graphical analysis of women's tops sold on Goodwill's website
Possibly the second largest donated item ever, after the aircraft carrier Russia "donated" to India (I think it was in need of $2B worth of repairs...)

frandroid··on Tell HN: Google drops blogspot.in, breaking hundreds of thousands of permalinks
I always have two cards on file with my registrar, but this year I had to cancel one card and the other one expired. Thankfully I was on top of my emails but I came within a month of losing my domains, which all kind of renew around the same time. It's frustrating to have to worry about this every once in a while.
frandroid··on Nokia to add open interfaces to its telecom equipment
But how can we create billionaires like Carlos Slim and Naguib Sawiris in every country without cellphone companies?
frandroid··on Two young scientists built a $250M business using yeast to clean up wastewater
The ethanol plants are already in the greenwashing business so it makes sense to go all-in. :)
frandroid··on The Fed now owns Walmart debt
It's at war with Amazon, and it's able to produce an ROI which exceeds the cost of borrowing anyway.
frandroid··on The Fed now owns Walmart debt
That's still a vastly different question than "should the government own all of Walmart's debt," as the previous spelling was inferring.
frandroid··on Ennio Morricone has died
Morricone re-scoring Star Wars would have been interesting :D
frandroid··on Ennio Morricone has died
How about the first half? Shostakovich?
frandroid··on Ennio Morricone has died
Morricone scored most of the films that Elio Petri and Gian Maria Volonté made together... that's another iconic film partnership that Morricone was part of, though less centrally in this case.
frandroid··on Twitter engineers replacing racially loaded tech terms like 'master,' 'slave'
> Usually slaves and masters are of the same race.

Not for the last 500 years.

frandroid··on Twitter engineers replacing racially loaded tech terms like 'master,' 'slave'
There were eras where slavery had little to do with race (see: the Roman Republic and Empire) but the history of slavery in the last half-millennium had everything to do with race; it is the edifice on which white supremacy was built.

You're not "controversial" for skipping over the blindingly obvious, but we're not allowed to insult people on this forum, so feh!

It's a Google backdoor for your team to add more tracking etc.

The important point is that it's a backdoor for marketing (and adtech) teams to get around developer/security requirements. At some point, someone on those teams gets frustrated that their one-line code requests (just load this script! add a gif banner here!) keep falling behind in the backlog. That happens in part because the product team often doesn't care about marketing, and sometimes because developers know that "just one more script!" paves the road to hell. At some point the third-party that's trying to get their business going through your business convinces the marketing team to add GTM, the marketing team says to the dev team "Hey we need GTM to implement THIS script". This time, because the other side has promised them $$$ in terms ROI, the marketing team pushes really hard for it, and eventually a product manager approves the request to get them off their back. The rest, as they say, is history (at retro time, multiple times down the road).

frandroid··on Google-backed groups criticize Apple's new warnings on user tracking
I can think of a few cases. For example, an app monitoring memory usage in other apps. Or an app made to intercept certain types of calls from other apps. (A music scrobbler, for example.)
frandroid··on Uber CEO Wants to Shift More Engineering Jobs to India, Sparking Internal Debate
In spite of the current remote-work revolution allegedly happening, most companies still want an office with workings coming physically so developers can be tracked and teams can bond and share knowledge. You'll be able to hire an Indian team that will come to an office in Pune or Bangalore, but you probably won't be able to assemble a great team in South Bend or Fort Wayne.

frandroid··on Inefficient, but Smart
And it's not just about not learning how to handle risk, but at this point it's gotten to the point of not believing that risk exists! That's the only way I can explain the militant anti-mask brigades out there. The virus cannot happen to them!
