Let's start the betting on the answers...
frandroid··on A glut has used-car depreciation accelerating
Some warranty/return possibility? A friend has just gone through two returns at CarMax.
frandroid··on “Bing is bigger than you think,” Microsoft boasts, at 33% of US searches
I'm not saying it's nefarious, I'm just saying they're desperate to show as large a market share as they can claim to. I used to work at Microsoft on MSN and helping Bing boost its numbers by all means necessary was job #1 by the time I left. Some of the means were not quite kosher.
frandroid··on “Bing is bigger than you think,” Microsoft boasts, at 33% of US searches
Most probably... They'll use anything they can to boost their market share numbers.

Yeah, at a huge return, and they could make that value higher if they were to start negotiations.

frandroid··on Letter from Benchmark to Uber Employees [pdf]
The pro-Travis side of the board is trying to get Benchmark to sell its shares to them. It seems that they have a good cash-out option in front of them that doesn't not require an IPO!

> And yet we use the diaeresis for the same reason that we use the hyphen: to keep the cow out of co-workers.
frandroid··on Google is paying Apple billions per year to remain on the iPhone
Yahoo is currently being sold for spare parts, and they're effectively out of the search business. Their search is mostly powered by Bing anyway.

It would be a huge propaganda and traffic coup for MSFT to be the default search engine on iPhone. MSFT won't pay /more/ than Google (if they were currently willing to do so, they would already by the default), but if Google was to not pay, MSFT would definitely jump in and pay Apple something, which is better than nothing.

frandroid··on Ask HN: Monetizing newsletter with 2M and 1M members
I don't, unfortunately. But start with segments you or a partner know best, obviously.
frandroid··on Ask HN: Monetizing newsletter with 2M and 1M members
How much traffic are you getting on those sites? I'd say don't try so hard to monetize the mailing list, try to monetize the sites (membership/patreon, premium services, new paywalled content verticals, paywalled podcasts) and use the mailing lists as an audience to bring to your sites.
frandroid··on Ask HN: Monetizing newsletter with 2M and 1M members
The percentage is not that important, the question is which segments are profitable. Try to identify 5 segments that add up to 20% of your readership, try to sell ads/strike partnerships with businesses interested in those segments. After 6 months, look at which of these are not profitable vs. effort/resources spent, and discontinue them. Keep looking for new segments.
frandroid··on Uber shareholder group wants Benchmark off board
Wow, these other investors are willing to give Benchmark a fabulous exit. I would negotiate it up to $12B and take it!
frandroid··on I Fell Victim to a $1,500 Used Camera Lens Scam on Amazon
Amazon probably has a process for "wrong item at right address", but since this is "wrong item at wrong address", they don't have a process for it. That's why this seller did this; they probably made a mistake once and discovered the loophole, and now they're driving a truck through it.
frandroid··on I'm an Idiot
Not at that point in the sentence!
frandroid··on Ask HN: Predictions on what will be the most surprising technology in 10 years?
AR headsets.

There were MP3 players before the iPod, but they weren't taking off quite yet. Then Jobs came, and the iPod changed the music market. And then changed the smartphone market. Google Glass was a good first mass market prototype, Microsoft seems to be going in the right direction with Hololens, but we all know it's not quite there yet. Whoever manages to figure out what the magic combination is for an AR headset that gets massive adoption, will usher in the next UI/portable computing revolution.

I'd also look at purchasing power parity... A dollar goes a long way in education in countries with weaker currencies.
frandroid··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
Except that when interest is 2%, you can borrow a fuckton of money with no consequences, but at 15% you're pretty limited by your ability to repay FAST. That's one of the reasons there have been so many corporate mergers, leading to massive centralization of wealth... when the interest rate is lower than the profit rate of the company you're buying, there's plenty of incentive to buy your competitors rather than trying to outdo them.
frandroid··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
Massive shift of the taxation burden from corporations to citizens.
frandroid··on Our Broken Economy, in One Simple Chart
> The only explanation I've ever seen that adequately explains those curves is inflation. Inflation drives up prices, both of goods and of assets.

Actually, this disparity growth has been driven by the extremist anti-inflationary policies of the Federal Reserve Bank under Alan Greenspan and his successors. Reduced of inflation allows accumulated wealth to mean more over time, whereas higher inflation puts pressure on workers to demand (and obtain) wage increases and keeps the inequality in check.

frandroid··on Stack Overflow Sunsetting Documentation
I find JS is well documented on MDN, but doc writers can't possibly imagine all edge cases and interactions. A lot of these cases are "If you knew about that simple feature of instruction A and the simple feature of instruction B and how they work together then you can solve this problem".
