frandroid··on China Blocks WhatsApp
What is "China" in this case? Its government is the Communist Party. It's not going to abolish itself!

The question to ask, if you want China to change, is to ask how would the Chinese Communist Party lose its grip on power. That would probably need to happen following an economic crisis. However, looking at how badly the Chavistas are driving Venezuela into the ground these days, and how much they're able to hold onto power, you can see that it's not easy to get rid of a government with a lot of resources. The boiling frog theorem applies here. A sudden shock, sudden famine, sudden economic turmoil is what's most likely to create the conditions of regime change.

I understand that, but an IP address doesn't make an account an ISIS account. An ISIS supporter might also be a Galatasaray SK supporter...

Fascinating... Just based on the username and the user's self-description?

Yeah, these are more chat wizards than chatbots... I think we should distinguish that.
frandroid··on Undercover in a Toronto factory where a temp worker died
That's the point of the article, I think. Because Fiera doesn't have an employment relationship with the employee, their workers' comp rates will never increase, no matter what happens to the workers. So they don't take the kinds of precautions which would have prevented this worker from dying. I mean, it also severs to human connection between workers and managers, where they just see workers as a dispensable resource, so there also less every day care about safety.
frandroid··on Undercover in a Toronto factory where a temp worker died
Catering companies, sports venues, etc. can still have you on-call. The difference between a temp agency and a catering company is that it completely severs the employment relation which protects the workers by law.

frandroid··on Quebec reaches lodging tax deal with Airbnb
The neighbourhood is still a lot of fun, but there are fewer merchants now then when I moved to Toronto in the early 2000s. There used to be 3 fishmongers, now there is only one; there's about 3 produce stores left, there used to be many more. A bunch of knick knack stores have closed. Back when I moved here, there were two (!) separate anarchist spaces; there hasn't been any in years now. On the upside, it's becoming the veg*n restaurant quarter of the city...
frandroid··on Quebec reaches lodging tax deal with Airbnb
The community that get uprooted from one neighbourhood doesn't reform in a new sui generis neighbourhood in the city to reconstitute itself whole; its members get scattered across the city. In Toronto's Kensington Market neighbourhood, in a 5 by 5 street area, there are somewhere around 250 airbnb units available, and the area is turning from a traditional market into a bar and restaurant area. The residents are pushed away and the local merchants are pushed away.
frandroid··on Quebec reaches lodging tax deal with Airbnb
It's mostly a double-tax grab: 1st, the hospitality tax, and 2nd, when Revenue Québec goes after hosts' undeclared income. This will have the effect to dissuade the small hosts due to government harassment, while the larger hosts will pay the income tax and still make bank. Exactly the outcome that is undesirable.
