franczesko··on Ask HN: Recommendations for a Linux Distro and Laptop?
Switched to Linux Mint last year. Works like a charm and is pretty ready out of the box
franczesko··on Taking a $15 Casio F91W 5km underwater
I think Garmin is doing pretty interesting outdoors models, however I prefer Casio due to simplicity and... nostalgia
franczesko··on Taking a $15 Casio F91W 5km underwater
The new abl-100, besides more wearable size could have a nice tinkering potential
franczesko··on Google open-sources the Pebble OS
Google, if you hear, please open source Stadia
franczesko··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
I can relate. My perception is that a company is for me, not the other way around. This really flips how work is handled.
franczesko··on No Bitcoin ETFs at Vanguard (2024)
And yet it still grows
franczesko··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Some other countries banned tiktok too, e.g. India

Integration will likely be the biggest growth driver for Gemini, I guess.

P2P is such an underrated tech
franczesko··on Microsoft disguises Bing as Google to fool inattentive searchers
The copilot feature is pretty handy.
franczesko··on Microsoft disguises Bing as Google to fool inattentive searchers
Bing is ok. DDG is pretty much its anonymized version.
franczesko··on Apple and Meta go to war over interoperability vs. privacy
We need devices fully under control of users. Neither Apple, nor Meta should be able to sniff aground once the device lands in costumer's hands
franczesko··on Apple Photos phones home on iOS 18 and macOS 15
We need to go back to local-first software. I'd be happy to pay premium for a device, which is truly my, without big tech sniffing all my data or deciding what can I do with it
franczesko··on The USB-C charging mandate arrives in the EU – here's what that means
Despite the standardization, my micro-USB devices are still going strong. From Apple perspective, that's one less proprietary connector to manage
franczesko··on Grayjay Desktop App
Watching hobby channels every now and then is very refreshing. I wish YT would recommend me more of those
franczesko··on Intel Core Ultra 9 285K "Arrow Lake" Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu Linux Performance
Running games was the only thing holding me back. I was surprised how far Linux has come. 95% of my work is done in a browser, so I can't comment on any software dependencies.
franczesko··on Buying a TV in 2025? Expect lower prices, more ads, and an OS war
"Today's TV selection has a serious dependency on advertisements and user tracking"

Pretty much like every device we own. We need to go back to local-first software. I'd be happy to pay premium for a device, which is truly my, without big tech sniffing all my dataor deciding what can I do with it

franczesko··on US lawmakers tell Apple, Google to be ready to remove TikTok from stores Jan. 19
"any speech being made on TikTok can instead be made on other platforms"

Tiktok is not banning certain topics, as other platforms do

The elephant in the room, is that content on Tiktok is served algorithmicaly, so if majority of population prefer to watch brainwash content, it's due to their choice, not algorithm's

franczesko··on Casio has released a ring in the form of its iconic watch
Digital watches in general have their charm https://youtu.be/mDVmdgao3RE?si=sfpEEkri1mmOvdAV
franczesko··on Casio has released a ring in the form of its iconic watch
There are g-shocks with bracelets. I have a model with a plastic one.
franczesko··on New Mac Mini with M4
Ryzen mini pcs seem to beat this in most of scenarios. Does anyone see clear advantages?
franczesko··on Why Google search is falling apart [video]
From Google's side, I think they're in a heavy monetization mode. Making the product worse by stuffing it with ads is one thing, but also the content on the web has deteriorated quality-wise. I don't have the data, but I saw somewhere that the majority of traffic is video. People aren't surfing the web anymore, they're relying on a few big platforms to deliver content to them. Finally, quality information on the web is no longer free.
franczesko··on Linux desktop market share climbs to 4.45%
"As awareness of data privacy issues grows, more users are turning to open-source alternatives like Linux"

I'd love to see Linux for mobile devices just because of that reason. Old school "what happens on device, stays on device"

franczesko··on Big tech wants to make AI cost nothing
Open source alternatives means that it will become difficult or close to impossible to monetize llms. It also means that no clear hegemony will occur. Fragmentation might be very beneficial for the status quo.
franczesko··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
3rd party got unsupervised access to kernel? I'd say it's even worse then
franczesko··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
I just wanted to mention that Microsoft has 3 tiers of Windows beta releases before changes are pushed to production. I can't comprehend how this wasn't noticed before.
franczesko··on Managing my motivation as a solo dev
'Some days when I’m not getting anything done, I’ve got this lingering guilt that I’m having a “zero day”'

I had this and after many years of treating myself that way, I treat myself kindly. It's a toxic approach and the easiest way to burnout. It's OK not to do anything.

franczesko··on Google releases smart watch for kids
I'm intrigued by those comments about smartwatches. Can you tell more about your experience? How your kids handle peer pressure?
