francesca··on Adwords’ Keyword Tool replacement story
It's very frustrating that they gated this feature. It's probably going to be great for more focused targeting (they can see exactly who wants to add what keywords to their web page). but as the OP states, there is about 1/2 of the features in this new version AND you need to sign up for AdWords.

The global lock was removed in 2.2

Now locking is on the database level.

great post! I like the detailed description and sample app
francesca··on Want to Spam Your LinkedIn Contacts and Be Humiliated? Try FounderDating
I've had similar issues. People in my group asked me to stop approving FounderDating posts because they felt it was spammy. Clearly something needs to change with their tone and overall marketing because it could be a great resource for some people with project ideas!
francesca··on How to get Hilary Mason to build your recommender for free
awesome!
francesca··on FinTech Hackathon 2013 and GlobalFX
Awesome! Even more awesome: ben built the entire GLobe from scratch!
francesca··on Ask HN: Have you been in a company with transparent salaries? Good?
I really love this philosophy as well, but if this is in place, you need to be very clear as to why someone makes more money than another. There needs to be standards in place, time limitations etc. Transparency is great, but often times one person makes more money than another because of a combination of skill set, negotiating power, gender and relationship status, not to mention relationships with other people in the company and the word we hate (favoritism).

So while I am 100% on board with transparency, I also believe it can have a backlash. There's no way to predict it, but creating path for someone to increase their salary and letting it be known before they sign the contract is a good idea.

francesca··on Build a Twilio Hard Phone with SIP from Twilio, Raspberry Pi, and Asterisk
awesome! I love seeing Twilio devs using "old" landline tech with the API. Way to go!
francesca··on MongoDB 2.4 Released: Text Search, Security, Hash-based Sharding
this presentation offers a good overview pre 2.4, but will give you insights into how you can prepare for memory issues http://www.10gen.com/presentations/mongosv-2012/capacity-pla...

francesca··on Why MongoDB Never Worked Out at Etsy
Disney runs over 1400 instances according to this presentation: http://www.10gen.com/presentations/mongosv-2011/a-year-with-...

Also foursquare runs a very large MongoDB deployment. http://www.10gen.com/presentations/mongodb-foursquare-cloud-...

Shutterfly also has a very large deployment: http://www.10gen.com/customers/shutterfly

francesca··on Introducing MongoClient
good stuff
francesca··on Using customer segmentation to improve conversion rates
Would be great to see a follow-post on how segmented marketing affects the diversity of entrance points to the funnel. For example, if you have more targeted marketing towards 3-4 different groups, you'll likely have fewer points of entry but more successful conversion rates.
francesca··on Color Will Shut Down on December 31st
In 1.5 years, $41 M gone. This company was full of so much drama. It's a shame that really good investors had to deal with a lot of grime.
francesca··on YC W13 Applicants
Probably a better strategy. If you take a look at Jessica Livingston's talk from Startup School (http://startupschool.org/2012/livingston/) she notes that YC gets nervous about hardware--but nerds (like me) on Kickstarter love it. That's how the pebble watch came to grow successfully. Kickstarter is once of the few places you can find and fund really innovative hardware products. Best of luck

francesca··on CodernityDB — pure Python, NoSQL, fast database
nginx didn't have english docs until 2 years after the project launched. Full story from Igor Here: http://www.ruby-forum.com/topic/151853

Also: Don't blame people for english lang proficiency.

francesca··on CodernityDB — pure Python, NoSQL, fast database
This seems like a speedy solution for inserts but I'm curious about reads

"Indexes tries to reuse as much space as possible, because metadata size is fixed, during every write operation, if index finds metadata marked as removed or so, it reuses it - writes new data into that place."

I'm curious how this is implemented.

francesca··on You Can Now Earn Real College Credit with Coursera
This is awesome! Glad to see they're paving the way! There's nothing like the face-to-face interaction of the university classroom, but for many the MOOC is a viable, and often preferred, alternative for education.
francesca··on Places to Start Acquiring Users
"Meetup.com is one of those services that will do the job of driving traffic to your meetup if you create one." This is a great point, but I think it's also important to focus on creating successful meetups. This is a huge time commitment. Creating a consistent arena for your user base requires coordinating activities that they would love, and then reaping the benefits of customer loyalty. It's an excellent idea, but you need to devote a good deal of time to it (sometimes even a person).
francesca··on Loosecubes is shutting down
Campbell is a rock star. Really disappointed they will be shutting down. Their product and culture were so uplifting! It's a great idea, but the market didn't pick up in the way they expected. I agree the market was a little ahead, but there were a few corners they could have cut. AirBNB did it well and it's possible they could have galvanized support for the co-working movement in the same way that AirBNB made it happen for travelers.
francesca··on The BufferApp Welcome Email
Joel and his team are awesome. They make a great product and make great decisions when it comes to their customer support. They also do great emails for buffer updates

My notes:

- from the team - they are sticking around after sending the email to answer requests - New feature description is short and sweet

francesca··on The Best Time to Post on Hacker News
There's some truth there, but if you send an email to the East Coast US at 2am, there's going to be a small chance people will read it when they wake up (they'll already have tons of other stuff competing at the top). Same goes with Twitter. You can't tweet something for everyone to see at a time when your target audience is not watching twitter. You need to test for that.

Either way, the essence of your argument is correct. Useful content fares better that fluff.
