Currently, https://josephg.com/sp/current returns a png with 3x8 (RGB) bits/pixel. But since the image has only 16 colors, you can reduce its filesize to ~20% (from ~714 to ~147 KB, with http://optipng.sourceforge.net/). Can't you can gain performance and reduce bandwith by keeping the image serverside as a 4 bit png?

That’s a valid point. But Sputnik had also a component of harmed pride (›most advanced nation‹); at least this should be reproducible.
frakturfreund··on NASA: We're sending humans to Mars
The NASA went to the moon because the russians wanted to do it. Today's space exploration is shaped by cooperation, but sometimes a little bit of competition is needed to achive great thinks.

This is why i'm really hoping for the chinese to announce a manned mission to mars. It's the red planet afterall ;), and this could be a modern sputnik shock for the NASA.

I didn’t know the chematics for the TIA, thank you very much!

I find this Chip quite intriguing because it's so minimal; its stunning how much could be archieved even under the hardest restrictions. Or how little, compared to later graphic chips of the 8-bit era (like the PPU of the NES).

frakturfreund··on Go generate: Proposal for Go 1.4
»the author commits the generated files to the source repository, so that they are available to clients that use go get:«

I understand that they want to keep $ go get fast, but i think that it is a bad practice to commit generate files into a repository. Instead, $ go get should call go generate.

The release notes mention the graceful shutdown of a http.Server:

"The net/http package now provides an optional Server.ConnState callback to hook various phases of a server connection's lifecycle (see ConnState). This can be used to implement rate limiting or graceful shutdown."

Knows anyone here a code example for this?

frakturfreund··on Why CPUs aren't getting any faster (2010)
Nothing can't travel faster than the speed of light – including Electric current. So in a hypothetic 5 gigahertz CPU, there couldn't be a path through the wires/transistors longer than 5.99584916 – otherwise, the end result couldn't be correctly determined. That's why CPU's got smaller and smaller. But since the transistor shrinking slows down, and Adders/Multiplyer/Register/Decoding Logic etc. all takes some time and length, it's harder to make a CPU with a shorter longest path.
frakturfreund··on Commit Message Generator
Yes, i forgot, it has to go into the [alias] section of .gitconfig.

It create a commit with a random message from whatthecommit.com; nothing you would push to your public repository; i use it in a script to backup some stuff in a git repo.

frakturfreund··on Commit Message Generator
For your ~/.gitconfig:

  wtc = !git commit -m \"$(curl -s http://whatthecommit.com/index.txt)\"
