frakt0x90··on Ask HN: Anyone making a living building desktop applications?
Not a self-venture but my old team built desktop applications for the pricing department at a very large airline. They did everything from recommending price changes to loading ad hoc adjustments and keeping track of pricing strategies. All in JavaFX. That team split and is making most of them web-based now but the desktop apps still thrive in the meantime.
frakt0x90··on Statistical Rethinking [video]
I started my Bayesian journey with his book which is fantastic, and if you're still interested, I highly recommend anything by Andrew Gelman. His lectures are captivating and he drops nuggets of intuition every other sentence. He also has at least one very highly regarded book on Bayes and a great website on stats and reproducibility (statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu).
frakt0x90··on German state planning to switch 25,000 PCs to LibreOffice
I've seen these stories pop up from time to time about large entities switch to linux or open source software in general and it seems there's a large number who end up going back to windows/proprietary. Hopefully this is not one of those.
frakt0x90··on Facebook Renames to Meta
This person called it a week ago which I just think is impressive

frakt0x90··on IEEE 754 round-off errors
I think it was a joke
frakt0x90··on My Tungsten Cube (2019)
I bought a tungsten wedding band and will never again. Not because of its hardness but because I dropped it on the floor and it shattered. Apparently tungsten is very brittle and is useless on a hand that does anything. Luckily it was cheap.
frakt0x90··on T-Mobile investigating claims of 100M customer data breach
A lot of comments about how terrible T-mobile security is. Is there a (US) carrier that has good security? How much worse is it than others?
frakt0x90··on Alphabet Announces Second Quarter 2021 Results
"we completed an assessment of the useful lives of our servers and network equipment and adjusted the estimated useful life of our servers from three years to four years and the estimated useful life of certain network equipment from three years to five years. This change in accounting estimate was effective beginning in fiscal year 2021 and the effect was a reduction in depreciation expense of $721 million and $1.6 billion and an increase in net income of $561 million and $1.2 billion, or $0.84 and $1.81 per basic and $0.83 and $1.78 per diluted share, for the three and six months ended June 30, 2021, respectively."

Crazy how those seemingly small changes can result in huge accounting difference.

frakt0x90··on Iceland found that work 35h/week with same pay as 40h have better productivity [pdf]
I don't know about y'all but I'm paid for working 40 and maybe hit 25-30 each week and I get stellar performance reviews. This isn't possible to swing in every profession but at least in my job (data science at a F500) no one expects you to put in a full 40 as long as your output is good.
frakt0x90··on Is Facebook's “Prophet” the time-series Messiah or just a naughty boy?
And if you want to play with this the gluonts python library makes it very easy. It also includes some other time series models as well! I've been playing with it at work and it's enjoyable.
frakt0x90··on GitHub Copilot
So now I make a bot to upload repositories of intentionally buggy code so that when people blindly use this autocomplete my hacking becomes easier!
frakt0x90··on Belarus has temporarily banned most of its citizens from leaving
So is Belarus going to be the next north korea?
frakt0x90··on Eric Carle has died
I absolutely loved that book as a kid and still remember the art very clearly 25+ years later. Crazy how such simple things can have such long lasting impressions.
frakt0x90··on Bell's theorem refuted?
Yes. I don't think there's every been a theorem that could be classified as maliciously misleading. And even if the author didn't mean to make it sound malicious, the grandiose language is unbecoming of an academic article.
frakt0x90··on GCC 11.1
I don't think that's true at all for Python. It's explicitly created as a "batteries included" language with a very large standard library. This is a quote from PEP 206:

"The Python source distribution has long maintained the philosophy of "batteries included" -- having a rich and versatile standard library which is immediately available, without making the user download separate packages."

frakt0x90··on The Two Cultures of Mathematics (2000) [pdf]
I do think there needs to be a better search system for latex/math symbols. That would be amazing. As far as using the notation, I forget where I read this but I remember seeing that one excuse for the use of abstract symbols is keep the ideas abstract so as to not narrow your mind into just what you're working on. So many areas of math cross over so keeping things abstract could aid in that recognition.
frakt0x90··on New Google Fi Cell plans – unlimited data for $30
So does this allow google to then harvest all of my data emanating from phone calls/browsing etc?
frakt0x90··on Mycodo – open-source environmental regulation system
Maybe I'm dumb but I have no idea what this is even after clicking around and reading the FAQ

edit: I am dumb and didn't scroll down far enough on the github page to see the pictures.

frakt0x90··on The “Granny Knot”
I 100% saw it the same way you did and exclaimed aloud when I read this thread.
frakt0x90··on The French armed forces are planning for high-intensity war
NoScript also works on most of them (including this one).
frakt0x90··on Renaming Coq
Reminds me of the similar problem with the machine learning conference NIPS which was renamed NeurIPS (not much of an improvement if you ask me). There were instances of women at that conference also being forced into uncomfortable situations relating to the name. People are dumb.

I was just thinking of a few other names that I find amusing but I can definitely imagine people abusing:

- Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS)

- Aircraft Incident Data Store (AIDS. This was renamed)

frakt0x90··on Uber and Lyft to swap data on banned drivers
Airlines do similar things for anything safety related. Having safer airlines is good for business and there's no sense in hoarding that information.
frakt0x90··on Passion Not Required: It's OK to Only Program for a Paycheck
Strongly agree. I programmed for a living and as my almost exclusive hobby for years. Then crashed and hated both. I forced myself to stop programming at home and re-invigorated my musical hobbies and I've been so much happier. I can now program for fun in moderate amounts too but I took about 6 months - a year hiatus.
frakt0x90··on Languages That Could Change the Way You See the World (2015)
I hadn't heard these before and I find that even less exotic languages change they way you think about things. I didn't understand grammar like indirect objects until I studied Spanish. In Vietnamese, every word is a single syllable and you chain them together to make more complex descriptors. They also have no tense. So to say "I went to the store yesterday", you say "I go store yesterday" The form of go does not change depending on the time period. Languages are so cool and if I could make as good a living just studying them I would.
frakt0x90··on Games can fix remote team building
I'm sure a lot of companies are like this but not all. The one I work for is huge (50k+ emps) and is very much like a family. One of our engineers got a really rare, debilitating disease and they kept him on even though he couldn't work for 2 years and they helped raise thousands of dollars for his medical bills. My manager even helped me find external jobs when things weren't improving here. Probably rare but it happens. My coworkers here are easily my best friends.
frakt0x90··on Plotnine: Grammar of Graphics for Python (2019)
I use this daily and love it. I used to use R just for EDA and visualization and Python for the rest but plotnine hanged that for me so I can do everything in one language. So much better than Matplotlib IMO.
frakt0x90··on Extracting the list of O'Reilly Animals
gif is lossless for images with < 256 colors and good for sharp-edged art according to this.

That would be my guess.

frakt0x90··on Taboola to go public at $2.6B valuation
The urinal and gas station ones are right up the street from me and I don't visit either of those facilities anymore for that reason.
frakt0x90··on Aim: Record, search and compare ML training runs
I've seen a lot these projects recently. I have used MLFlow for a while and enjoyed it. How does this compare?
