frakr··on The Wall Street Journal to Close Google Loophole Entirely
It's easier to not read Rupert Murdoch owned content.
frakr··on Sony and LG stop making 3D TV sets
Which would you recommend?
frakr··on How much does employee turnover really cost?
Do you use The Employers' Association by any chance?

I used to work for a company that used their data. The reports they provided did not have any technical positions included. There was no transparency on their process.

Comparing those numbers to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the salaries for anyone doing technical work were below market rate. https://www.bls.gov/bls/blswage.htm

BLS data is transparently provided and very specific.

frakr··on Crafting a high-performance TV user interface using React
I had to do that after I got put in a group where there was no way to view the description or episode list without also starting to play the selection (in browser). On a console app the other day it would start playing an audio preview of anything selected making scrolling through my options extremely annoying. I quit the app almost immediately. I don't mind being in the testing group but I would definitely like the option to quit a test group. Wouldn't that feedback be valuable to them?
frakr··on Lego Is the Perfect Toy
Isn't this just an ad?
frakr··on Why Are Developers Still Pouring Billions into Waterlogged Miami?
It would be interesting to know if this type of behavior would continue if the federal government stopped subsidizing flood insurance in these areas: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/can-femas-flood-in... I don't really understand why tax dollars are being spent on this type of thing.
frakr··on Biggest Spike in Traffic Deaths in 50 Years? Blame Apps
The expectations of the users are supposed to be managed by the creators of the apps. Right now, in my opinion, they are making an unacceptably dangerous compromise in driver safety for a very minor increase in customer convenience.
frakr··on Biggest Spike in Traffic Deaths in 50 Years? Blame Apps
It's also a bit worrisome that the driver apps only give the driver ~30 seconds to accept a new ride request. The requests almost always come in while they are driving.

Drivers are forced to pay attention to their phone and try to figure out if they want to accept the ride, all while driving. It's incredibly distracting and they never have enough time to pull over and safely accept the request.

This puts the driver as well as everyone else on the road at risk for no reason other than some arbitrary response time for ride requests.

frakr··on Reasons not to use Uber
I have seen Uber's commission misstated in a few posts: Uber takes $1.55 off the top of each ride for a booking fee and then 28% of the remaining amount. This means for short rides Uber takes 40%+ of the fare, depending on the city.

I would love to see a drivers guild get formed, maybe structured as an employee owned company.

It also provides a cotton candy flavored gateway into an addictive habit.

frakr··on ZCash Will Be a Truly Anonymous Blockchain-Based Currency
Monero is just an over-hyped pumped up alt coin. All of the trade volume is on the exchange Poloniex which claims to be based in the US but provides no details of who owns or operates the site beyond that. They allow margin trading. I highly doubt their legitimacy. The initial rise of Ethereum also occurred on Poloniex. Lots of hype surrounding both of those coins without any real world utility.

frakr··on Comcast rolling out 1TB data caps to most states in November
I don't understand the people who argue that 1TB is a lot of data. Sure, yes it is right now. What about 5 years from now? 4K TVs and streaming are already starting to become mainstream. Many online VR experiences are going to be resource heavy. 1TB isn't even the size of a decent consumer HDD, for people that do online backups. This seems like a preemptive strike against online media consumption. I can't wait to have any viable alternative to Comcast.
frakr··on Apollo Global is buying Rackspace for $4.3B
They own for-profit education companies like University of Phoenix. Read up on their history, especially the law suits, to get an idea of what the management's values are like: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Phoenix
frakr··on Alphabet Loses $859M on 'Moonshots' in 2Q 2016
I think that it would be reasonable to assume that many of these moonshots are generating patents that could have significant long term value.
frakr··on German government agrees to ban fracking indefinitely
I don't understand how people can be so confident in the computer models that show that it is safe to inject millions upon millions of gallons of toxic waste water deep underground. They say that it's safe over a timeline of hundreds of years, but we don't even have computer models that can predict the weather above ground for next week.
