fractal618··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
Haha! Like a reverse Trojan horse :) or one of those fake Amazon packages that blow glitter and stink gas when you open them :)
fractal618··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
I wish everyone used the same versioning system for all software: A.B.C increment C for security patches, increment B for new features, increment A for systemic changes.
fractal618··on Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel
I recently learned that EFI shims are also vulnerable. Is Coreboot the way forward for system security?
fractal618··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
This is the major problem I see with flock cameras. They say it’s okay because they’re only using it for good. But can they actually protect the honeypots they create? No. Is it their fault if it gets stolen? Yeah but at that point cats out of the bag.
fractal618··on Measure internet censorship
I’d be careful to use a tool like this because it will look like you are going to these sites in question.
fractal618··on Warez: The Infrastructure and Aesthetics of Piracy (2021)
I remember and miss the golden days. Although it was probably glitter and not actually gold. Still, it was exciting. 3v3n 4 teh sc1pt kidd14s sti77 learnin’ ta sh4ve.
fractal618··on Hackers Got Inside a Flock Camera
What could go wrong?
fractal618··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
I like the installation music :-)
fractal618··on Emacs Bedrock 2.0
Yea I couldn’t resist. I’m actually a huge fan of eMacs although I only only tried it once. I’m not a programmer, just scripts here and there in random attempts with varying success. Thank you for the history tidbit! That is really cool. I love hearing stories about punch card programs and Lisp and any forgotten or slightly forgotten technology for that matter
fractal618··on Emacs Bedrock 2.0
Isn’t eMacs just a text editor like vim or nano?
fractal618··on HackerRank open sourced its ATS. My resume scored 90/100. Oh wait 74. No – 88
Maybe the ATS has logic for people resubmitting their resume. I don’t know how isolated each test was.
fractal618··on Getting Creative with Perlin Noise Fields
I learned a lot about perlin noise when generating virtual worlds for Wurm Unlimited fascinating stuff and very satisfying when you get results you’re looking for.
fractal618··on Put the zip code first
GPS coordinates is the answer.
fractal618··on Verizon outages reported across U.S.
Didn’t they just raid a reporters house. I wonder what service provider they used…
fractal618··on Urban Dead is shutting down
What does the online safety act require websites to do?
fractal618··on XFCE 4.20 Aims to Bring Preliminary Wayland Support
Isn’t compiz a compositor for xfce?

Btw I love xfce. Find it to be the perfect balance between features, stability and performance!!!

fractal618··on US Government interagency sea level rise website is live
Any theories on why water level rise is not uniform? 10 inches higher east of New York but 0 inches higher a thousand miles south?
fractal618··on What kind of bug would make machine learning suddenly 40% worse at NetHack?
diff (40% worse code, pre-40% worse code)
fractal618··on Cubic millimetre of brain mapped at nanoscale resolution
Fascinating! I wonder how different that is from the mind of a man haha
fractal618··on I'm an engineer that needs to sell my services. Any good books on sales?
Less technical but you might find Proximity principle by Ken Coleman to be helpful as well.
fractal618··on A confusing probability question: Red and green balls in an urn
I agree. This is a beautiful summary of the logic I used
fractal618··on A confusing probability question: Red and green balls in an urn
I would say red because n is probably larger than 50 if the first one picked was red
fractal618··on Why can't today's young adults leave the nest? Blame high housing costs
My observation has been that as long as basic human needs are easily obtained there is a natural tendency to become complacent and go with the flow.

Another perspective could be: what’s so bad about people taking longer to mature? In a way it points to the possibility that we have evolved to a society that allows children to be children for longer. The real problem is that biologically their bodies are screaming for reproduction which becomes confusing and stressful. Perhaps in the future we will deal with this in creative and healthy new ways

fractal618··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
Not sure what to say. It’s been hard. I need to take a break.
fractal618··on Recursive Game of Life
That is beautiful
