fraXis··on IMAX apologizes to Ars for its trademark retraction demand
This reminds me of a story Mad Magazine's Dick DeBartolo likes to tell.

He did a 'The Empire Strikes Back' Mad Magazine edition in 1980. George Lucas sent him a personal written letter telling him how much he enjoyed the issue.

A little bit later, Lucasfilm's legal department also sent Dick a threatening legal letter informing him that Mad Magazine was infringing on 'The Empire Strikes Back' copyright with the issue they had released.

Dick opened his desk drawer and took out George Lucas' personal letter praising the issue, made a copy of it, and mailed it back to Lucasfilm legal.

He never heard from them again.

Their support is first rate and the #1 reason I won't change to another provider. There is nothing better than opening a chat window and having someone who is knowledgeable respond and who can get the problem fixed right away. To me that is worth the premium I pay for using Rackspace over a service like Azure or AWS.

What is the ETA for the public beta?

Looks good and something my company may use.

A blog post about what went into the development over the course of the 3 years would be an interesting read.

fraXis··on Strongsync – Host your own Dropbox using only SFTP or S3
Thanks for suggesting this. I will check it out.

I just recently started using Bittorrent Sync just for the ability that I can "host" all of my own files, and not rely on S3, DropBox, etc.

fraXis··on Strongsync – Host your own Dropbox using only SFTP or S3
I am a paid customer of ExpanDrive and never received any notification about this software being soft launched or tested. Probably would of been a good idea to soft launch to all paid ExpanDrive users to help with testing.

After installing the software, I got a 404 link when the installer tried to open a page.

How well was this beta tested?

I noticed the introductory price is only good until the end of the year which is less than two weeks away. Not a lot of time to play with it before the price increases.

I feel it would be better to have a public beta (instead of a trial) to work out all of the kinks first. I remember the problems with the early versions of Dropbox when it was first released.

fraXis··on Killing cancer like the common cold
I don't feel that way. I see all the money that is being made from the ongoing treatment of Cancer. Drugs, surgery, scans, follow up appointments, radiation, and then the cycle repeats when the cancer returns or comes out of remission.
fraXis··on Killing cancer like the common cold
There will never be a cure for cancer.

My wife was diagnosed in September with stage 1 breast cancer. She has triple negative breast cancer which is the most aggressive kind to get. She is on week 6 of a 16 week Chemotherapy regimen. Then she has 8 weeks of radiation.

Insurance has already spent over 100k on her lumpectomy and chemo drugs and doctor appointments since September.

Every week when we go to her oncologist office, the waiting room is always full with patients we have never seen before. More than half of them are new patients filling out their new patient paperwork. And they are getting younger and younger in age. We have seen teenagers in his office with breast cancer.

There is just too much money (doctors, surgery, drugs) to be made from treating this disease. What are all of these trained oncologist surgeons/doctors going to do if cancer gets cured? What are the drug companies that make these expensive chemo drugs going to do if cancer gets cured?

There is no way they are going to cure this horrible disease. There is no money to be made in the cure.

fraXis··on Why Netflix should buy AMC
When you say Walking Dead has been getting "worse and worse" are you referring to the show itself or the ratings? While the show itself is debatable, the ratings are not suffering in the least.

I am going to pay the $8 as well. I just wish I could give them my money now while downloading it via the torrent, but it is not available for purchase until December 23rd (tomorrow) on their site.

They should of put the torrent up on the same day it was available for purchase.

fraXis··on Autocomplete your life with Greplin (YC W10)
Yeah that kind of irritated me a bit because authorized them to access my Facebook and then I was told that I would be e-mailed once they are ready for me.

I didn't even get a welcome letter or anything in my e-mail. I at least would of felt better if I had some type of acknowledgment that I signed up for the service, and a status screen where I could check on the indexing process.

It was almost like: "Thanks for letting us use your Facebook data to build out/test our service. We will be in touch."

I wouldn't of signed up if I knew the sign up process was going to be like that.

fraXis··on Handy Light: Tethering App Camouflaged as Flashlight
I was able to get this app before it was removed. I followed the directions and it works perfectly on my Macbook Pro.

However, it only works with Safari. It does not work with Chrome, Firefox, or any mail protocols (POP / IMAP / SMTP).

fraXis··on VistaDB shutting down because of business operating costs
With you being a fan of .Net, do you have any recommendations for a simple database to use with .Net that can easily be installed onto a customer's computer.

VistaDB was very simple to install. You only had to copy the .dll to the installation directory and it worked.

fraXis··on VistaDB shutting down because of business operating costs
I have been an actual user of VistaDB for almost 4 years now. Jason who is deciding to close down the company had bought it from the original owners a few years back.

It is really good software, especially if you are a .Net programmer needing a simple database for installation on a customer's computer.

It's a shame how he is handling this.

fraXis··on VistaDB shutting down because of business operating costs
He has a user on his forum threatening legal action because the user feels like he is being extorted to pay the $699 source code fee to get the latest version with no licensing activation.

He should offer a free upgrade to v4.1 so all the users can still use the software once the company closes down their activation servers. Maybe not a free source code version, but a free upgrade to v4.1 would be in order.

All of the older version users have to activate their version of the software and it will be useless once the activation servers go offline.

They are both problematic. There are reports all over the net that the Apple store and AT&T stores are taking orders with pen and paper because the servers are down.

As for the app, I want to have the iPhone shipped to me. It looks like you can only reserve for in-store pickup with the Apple iPhone app.
